Jul fest! Pre-Christmas party!

I was not able to spend the end of last year in Stockholm, but instead, my friends got together and threw me a Christmas party.　We decided to have our friends over to share Christmas food related to Sweden.

It is difficult to imagine nowadays, but Sweden used to be an impoverished country.　In those days, people could not afford to eat meat, and feasts were only available at the end of the year during the Christmas season and at Midsummer festivals to celebrate the summer solstice.

Scandinavia has a harsh climate, and it is not easy to grow food suited to the region. In the southern part of Sweden, the land is fertile and vegetables can be grown, but in the northern part of the country, the climate is harsher and potatoes and rye are the main staple foods.　In the old days, foodstuffs were not as plentiful as they are today, and I felt that the traditional Christmas dishes strongly reflected the dietary habits of that time.

This is one of the most essential Christmas Jul foods in Sweden. Sil! Yes, it's marinated herrings. 😉👏

Also, this is another essential food we cannot miss in Swedish Christmas Jul dinner. It's called "Crispy bread, Knäckebröd.

友達とのひと時

昨年末はストックホルムでは過ごすことが出来なかったのですが、その代わりに友達たちが集まってクリスマスパーティーを開いてくれました。　友達をスウェーデンにまつわるクリスマスの食べ物を寄せ合って一緒に食べることにしました。

今ではなかなか想像することが難しいのですが、昔のスウェーデンはとても貧しい国だったようです。　昔と言っても２００年から１５０年前の話なのですが、その当時はなかなか肉を食べることが出来ず、年末のクリスマスの時期や夏至をお祝いする夏至祭りなどにしかご馳走は食べられなかったそうです。

北欧は気候が厳しく、なかなかその土地にあった食物が育ちません。スウェーデンの南部では肥沃な国土が広がっていて、野菜は育つのですが、北部になればなるほど気候が厳しく主にジャガイモ、ライ麦などが主食になり、それ以外の食物はなかなか育たないようです。　特に昔は今日の様に豊富に食材があるわけでもなく、伝統的なクリスマス料理はその当時の食生活を色濃く反映している感じがしました。 友達と久しぶりによいひと時を過ごすごとが出来ました👏
