After our quick tour at Tops and Buwakan ni Alejandra, we were starving. We travelled from the mountains of Cebu all the way SRP, once a reclaimed land now a vibrant shopping district at Mactan Channel. This restaurant is called Vegan Island located at Il Corso Lifemalls, SRP. We had reservations at this restaurant but I don't think it was necessary; the entire time we dined here we were the only customers/group of customer. I'm surprise to learn that there's an entirely vegan restaurant in Cebu as Cebuano's love to eat meat, especially pork. If not for Stefan, the boyfriend of GB's cousin, who's a vegan, we won't have the slightest idea that this restaurant exists.
When the staff handed over the menu, I was shocked with to see the variety they're offering. I thought the menu would be limited to maximum of five (5) dishes. There were so many dishes to choose from, from appetizer, mains, drinks and even dessert. There were like more than 15 of us so we occupied roughly 3/4 of the restaurant. To make things easier, we ordered per table or group. In our table, which we shared with GB's older brother, we ordered carbonara (Php 195), friedshroom (Php 320), tofu sisig (Php 290), chickun nuggets and in the other tables, I heard they ordered more or less the same with our order plus garlic mushroom tufo and garden fresh salad.
Being the only customers that night worked to our advantage; despite the volume of orders, everything was served in about 15 minutes. Thank goodness! I was really hungry and for sure, everyone else was hungry, too! If you look closely at the photos of some of the food we ordered, you'd think they're made of meat, right? One even resembles the famous ginabot present in every pungko-pungko.
The kids didn't like the food; some adults liked it but some didn't. My personal take? The food I've tried were acceptable except for the carbonara, which lacked coherence in taste and texture. I felt they were just offering this pasta for the sake of offering it without much thought on how a vegan counterpart would actually taste like in reality. As for the rest, they were tasty and something I can recommend to all of you. If there's one key takeaway from this experienc that is: it will be difficult to transition from the usual diet to a vegan diet but there are ways and means to devote oneself to a vegan life. It is just a matter of consistency and commitment. As for me, I have no plans whatsoever to be transition. Pork isn't something I could give up. 😭
