My first meal in 2024 was a cake and a parfait. Do you think it’s a meal?
After sending off my partner to his new workplace, I was left alone in Ginza with no destination but to go home. But I didn’t want to go home yet, it’s too early. Besides, I took my precious time to dress up only to go home within 30 minutes? No way! 😂
So I decided to eat, since there’s no food at home. Yep, we didn’t prepare anything for New Year. And we didn’t even get groceries.
There was a restaurant handing out something, probably related to how Japanese celebrate the new year but it was so crowded so I moved to another location. Something quieter.
While I was crossing the street in the middle of Ginza, I saw Fujiya. This shop is famous in Ginza for its cakes. They have takeout on the 1st floor and a restaurant on the 2nd. It’s always full, but today, the waiting time was bearable. It wasn’t so crowded probably because it’s the New Year and only a few people are in Tokyo and going out. Lucky!
While waiting for my name to be called, I was deciding what to get. I haven’t had lunch yet so everything seems delicious. This is their sample, do they look real?
I didn’t wait long. I was then guided to my seat. Deciding what to order took so much time because I wanted to eat all.
In Japanese restaurants, there’s always that famous okosama lanchi (お子様ランチ or kids lunch meal), a plate full of good stuff that’s easy to eat for kids. I’ve always wanted to order that, but I’m no child.
In Fujiya, they have this adult version of the okosama lanchi. Now you don’t have to worry about ordering a kids lunch meal, because adults can now order it. 😅 I didn’t order it though. I wanted to but it seems a lot.
I thought of getting omuraisu (オムライス or omurice), rice with egg on top but in the end, I settled just for desserts. I thought I’d be getting takeout lunch somewhere else, omurice or not.
I think their best seller cake here is the Strawberry Cake so that’s what I got for myself. I was confused if I should get it or not, tbh. Glad I did!
It was so cakey and so yummy. I never expected it to be so soft. It was creamy and not too sweet, just the right amount. The strawberries were delicious and sweet and it’s really a lot than what I expected.
I got a hot chamomile tea to pair it with. Nothing fancy, it’s just a normal tea. The container is a first for me though. I thought this is only for coffee?
I ordered a Chocolate Parfait too. Why?! I don’t know actually. I just thought it was so tasty looking in the sample outside and in the photos. I realized late that I shouldn’t have ordered both hot and cold at the same time. 😆
The Chocolate Parfait had bananas and brownies on it, just balancing the chocolate. It was too sweet for me though. Still, I enjoyed eating it and finished it. Later, I regretted having it because I felt so cold outside. 😅 Well, it’s winter, what can I expect 😅
I didn’t stay long as I wanted to go home already. I was on my own and everyone in the restaurant seem to have company. I felt spying eyes checking what I was eating/doing, or maybe it was just my imagination.
That’s the start of my new year. Having cake and parfait at this afternoon as my first meal doesn’t sound bad, right? How about yours? What was your first meal of 2024?
