In June 1783, people all across Europe looked up and saw something extraordinary. A fireball blazed across the sky, glowing red and gold, casting strange shadows on the land. Some said it was a sign from God. Others watched in silence, unsure what to feel.
No one could have guessed that this beautiful, terrifying light might mark the beginning of a long, quiet disaster.
Today, scientists believe that the meteor released fine dust high into the atmosphere. Around the same time, far to the north, the Laki volcano in Iceland erupted violently. Together, they filled the sky with ash and gas, dimming the sun and cooling the earth. The seasons shifted. Summer felt like autumn. Crops struggled to grow. The skies stayed hazy for months.
In France, where so many people already lived in poverty, this was devastating. The wheat harvests failed again and again. Bread the single most important food for ordinary people became harder to find. And what little was left cost more than most could afford.
Day by day, hunger grew. Families sold what they could. Parents skipped meals. Children starved. By the end of the decade, the pain was everywhere not just in the countryside, but in the heart of Paris.
We often learn that the French Revolution started because of injustice and ideas. And that is true. But there’s another part of the story. A quieter one. A colder one. Maybe before the protests, before the guillotines, before the cries for liberty, there was something else.
A strange light in the sky.
A chain of events that no one could control.
Maybe the first spark of revolution didn’t come from the people.
Maybe it came from space.

Manche hielten es für ein Zeichen Gottes. Andere schwiegen einfach, fasziniert und beunruhigt zugleich.
Was niemand ahnte: Dieses Schauspiel könnte mehr verändert haben, als man sich vorstellen konnte.
Heute vermuten Forscher, dass der Meteorit feinen Staub in die obere Atmosphäre schleuderte. Kurz darauf brach der Vulkan Laki in Island aus und spie monatelang giftige Gase und Asche in die Luft. Zusammen verdunkelten sie den Himmel. Die Temperaturen sanken. Der Sommer blieb aus. Die Jahreszeiten verschoben sich. Felder verdorrten, und die Ernten fielen aus.
In Frankreich traf es die Menschen besonders hart. Viele lebten schon vorher am Rande des Hungers. Jetzt wurde Brot das wichtigste Lebensmittel für das Volk knapp. Und wenn es doch noch irgendwo zu finden war, war es unbezahlbar.
Die Menschen hungerten. Väter verzichteten auf Essen, damit ihre Kinder überlebten. Mütter standen nachts an, in der Hoffnung auf ein Stück Brot. Die Wut wuchs langsam, aber stetig. Nicht nur gegen hohe Steuern oder ungerechte Herrschaft, sondern gegen ein Gefühl tiefer Hoffnungslosigkeit.
Bis 1789 war aus Verzweiflung Widerstand geworden.
Natürlich war die Revolution ein Ergebnis politischer Ungerechtigkeit, von Aufklärung und sozialer Ungleichheit. Aber vielleicht begann sie auch anders.
Vielleicht begann sie mit einem Licht am Himmel.
Mit einer Kette von Ereignissen, die niemand hätte stoppen können.
Vielleicht kam der erste Funke nicht von unten.
Vielleicht fiel er von oben.
