Nominated this year for nine Academy Awards, The Banshees of Inisherin, Martin McDonagh's latest work, presents a plot bordering on the surreal, yet extremely simple. While a bloody civil war is taking place on the mainland, the (fictional) Irish island of Inisherin seems estranged from the rest of the world. Interrupting the quietness of the place is a mundane, yet seemingly inexplicable event. Fiddler Colsom Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly breaks off his long-standing friendship with herdsman Pádraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farrell).
Colsom declares that his friend, a simple and good-hearted man, no longer suits him. By now the man is approaching old age and wishes to concentrate totally on his music. The daily chats with Pádraic, described by Colsom as empty and boring, distract him from his attempt to make a mark, to give meaning to his existence.
Pádraic is deeply shaken by his friend's decision and his continued attempts at reconciliation are in vain. At one point, Colsom gives him an ultimatum: if he does not stop pestering him, he will cut off, one by one, the fingers of the hand with which he plays the violin. Meanwhile, Pádraic begins to feel deeply lonely, especially after the departure of his beloved sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon). The only company that seems to fill his days is that of the animals he takes care of, in particular his donkey Jenny.
In The Banshees of Inisherin, the presence of animals is very significant. Unlike human beings, who wage war for nothing and sow hatred, animals are pure and innocent creatures, who give totally disinterested love.
Faced with yet another attempt by Pádraic to get closer to his friend, Colm reaches the height of self-harm. He cuts off all the fingers of his hand and throws them at his former friend's door. When the herdsman returns home, he finds the lifeless body of his donkey. The creature has in fact suffocated itself in an attempt to swallow one of Colm's fingers.
Distraught and full of rage, Pádraic reaches Colm and warns him: the following Sunday, at four o'clock, he will come to burn down his house, regardless of whether the man is inside or not. He begs him, however, to leave his dog, the only innocent creature in their conflict, outside.
The herdsman thus keeps his promise. On the appointed day, he takes some logs, petrol and lanterns from home. He heads for Colsom's house on a cart pulled by one of his horses. When he arrives at the house, he sees Colsom's dog in front of the house door, picks him up and puts him on the cart so that he will not be involved in the fire.
While a slow, melodious opera song plays in the background, Pádraic puts his revenge plan into action, setting fire to his former best friend's house. Before leaving, he checks through the window to see if the man is home: Colsom is sitting, apparently calm, smoking a cigarette. Although Pádraic is certainly aware of the grave consequences of his actions, he walks away from the house, leaving it in flames.
There are certainly many scenes in The Banshees of Inisherin that are worthy of mention, but this sequence is particularly significant.
For much of the film, the character of Pádraic Súilleabháin, wonderfully written and played, is very positive, capable of arousing the sympathy and compassion of the viewer.
Pádraic is, in fact, a good and kind man, well liked by everyone on the island. It is no coincidence that he is the only one who accepts the company of the young and naive Dominic (Barry Keoghan), who is considered 'the village idiot', but who in reality suffers the drama of loneliness and abuse from his father. Suddenly, he is pushed away by his best friend for simply not being cultured enough, for being too humble and simple a person. He loves the company of his animals, in which he perhaps takes refuge excessively, as his more rational sister points out to him. Also excessive is his insistence in the face of Colm's categorical refusal, but the audience cannot help but understand him, given the sudden and cruel interruption of their relationship.
When his beloved donkey is inadvertently killed, Pádraic's attitude undergoes a radical change. The latter is masterfully rendered by the expressiveness and skill of Colin Farrell, who deservedly won a Golden Globe for his performance. From confused and overwhelmed by events, he becomes a man blinded by rage and vengeance.
His frustration takes the form of a violent and dangerous action, which the viewer never expected to see such a positive character perform. Most striking is Pádraic's awareness that his former friend is at home: the man remains indifferent to the tragic consequences his actions may entail.
On the other hand, Colsom makes no attempt to escape or stop his friend, a behaviour that manifests the extreme tragic nature of the character. After his last act of self-mutilation, which will prevent him from playing for the rest of his life, the man has reached the pinnacle of self-destruction.
With this intense sequence, The Banshees of Inisherin shows us the dramatic consequences that an apparently trivial and meaningless conflict between men can entail.
A conflict that if on the one hand is as intimate and personal as that between Pádraic and Colsom, on the other hand is as universal as the civil war, which in McDonagh's work remains constantly in the background.
Finally, the sequence remains especially memorable for those who have seen and appreciated Three Manifestos in Ebbing, Missouri (2017), the Irish director's previous film. In that work too, a character shaken by a loss vented his anger by setting fire to a place he held responsible for his suffering.
In The Banshees of Inisherin, the fire scene represents a tragic point of no return for the two characters: for their relationship in the first place, which will forever be characterised by conflict and anger, but also for themselves. Thus, as he had already done in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Martin McDonagh returned to tell us about the vanity of anger and human conflict. And he has done so by producing one of the most intense and original works of the year.

Nommé cette année pour neuf Oscars, Les Banshees d’Inisherin, la dernière œuvre de Martin McDonagh, présente une intrigue à la limite du surréalisme, mais extrêmement simple. Alors qu'une guerre civile sanglante se déroule sur le continent, l'île irlandaise (fictive) d'Inisherin semble coupée du reste du monde. Un événement banal, mais apparemment inexplicable, vient interrompre la tranquillité de l'endroit. Le violoniste Colsom Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) rompt soudainement son amitié de longue date avec le berger Pádraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farrell).
Colsom déclare que son ami, un homme simple et au grand cœur, ne lui convient plus. L'homme approche de la vieillesse et souhaite se consacrer entièrement à sa musique. Les discussions quotidiennes avec Pádraic, décrites par Colsom comme vides et ennuyeuses, le détournent de sa tentative de laisser une trace, de donner un sens à son existence.
Pádraic est profondément ébranlé par la décision de son ami et ses tentatives répétées de réconciliation sont vaines. À un moment donné, Colsom lui lance un ultimatum : s'il ne cesse pas de le harceler, il lui coupera, un par un, les doigts de la main avec laquelle il joue du violon. Pendant ce temps, Pádraic commence à se sentir profondément seul, surtout après le départ de sa sœur bien-aimée Siobhán (Kerry Condon). La seule compagnie qui semble remplir ses journées est celle des animaux dont il s'occupe, en particulier son ânesse Jenny.
Dans Les Banshees d’Inisherin, la présence des animaux est très significative. Contrairement aux êtres humains, qui font la guerre pour rien et sèment la haine, les animaux sont des créatures pures et innocentes, qui donnent un amour totalement désintéressé.
Face à une nouvelle tentative de Pádraic de se rapprocher de son ami, Colm atteint le paroxysme de l'automutilation. Il se coupe tous les doigts de la main et les jette à la porte de son ancien ami. Lorsque le bouvier rentre chez lui, il trouve le corps sans vie de son âne. La créature s'est en effet étouffée en tentant d'avaler un des doigts de Colm.
Affolé et plein de rage, Pádraic rejoint Colm et l'avertit : le dimanche suivant, à quatre heures, il viendra brûler sa maison, que l'homme soit à l'intérieur ou non. Il le supplie cependant de laisser son chien, la seule créature innocente dans leur conflit, à l'extérieur.
Le berger tient donc sa promesse. Le jour dit, il prend chez lui des bûches, de l'essence et des lanternes. Il se dirige vers la maison de Colsom sur une charrette tirée par l'un de ses chevaux. Lorsqu'il arrive à la maison, il voit le chien de Colsom devant la porte, le prend et le met sur la charrette pour qu'il ne soit pas impliqué dans l'incendie.
Pendant qu'une chanson d'opéra lente et mélodieuse est jouée en arrière-plan, Pádraic met en œuvre son plan de vengeance en mettant le feu à la maison de son ancien meilleur ami. Avant de partir, il vérifie par la fenêtre si l'homme est chez lui : Colsom est assis, apparemment calme, fumant une cigarette. Bien que Pádraic soit certainement conscient des graves conséquences de ses actes, il s'éloigne de la maison, la laissant en flammes.
De nombreuses scènes du film Les Banshees d’Inisherin méritent d'être mentionnées, mais cette séquence est particulièrement significative.
Pendant une grande partie du film, le personnage de Pádraic Súilleabháin, merveilleusement écrit et interprété, est très positif, capable de susciter la sympathie et la compassion du spectateur.
Pádraic est en effet un homme bon et gentil, apprécié de tous les habitants de l'île. Ce n'est pas un hasard s'il est le seul à accepter la compagnie du jeune et naïf Dominic (Barry Keoghan), considéré comme "l'idiot du village", mais qui souffre en réalité du drame de la solitude et des abus de son père. Soudain, il est repoussé par son meilleur ami parce qu'il n'est pas assez cultivé, qu'il est trop humble et trop simple. Il aime la compagnie de ses animaux, dans lesquels il se réfugie peut-être à l'excès, comme le lui fait remarquer sa sœur, plus rationnelle. Son insistance face au refus catégorique de Colm est également excessive, mais le public ne peut que le comprendre, étant donné l'interruption soudaine et cruelle de leur relation.
Lorsque son âne bien-aimé est tué par inadvertance, l'attitude de Pádraic change radicalement. Ce dernier est magistralement rendu par l'expressivité et l'habileté de Colin Farrell, qui a mérité un Golden Globe pour sa performance. De confus et dépassé par les événements, il devient un homme aveuglé par la rage et la vengeance.
Sa frustration prend la forme d'une action violente et dangereuse, que le spectateur ne s'attendait pas à voir exécuter par un personnage aussi positif. Ce qui est le plus frappant, c'est que Pádraic est conscient que son ancien ami est chez lui : l'homme reste indifférent aux conséquences tragiques que ses actes peuvent entraîner.
En revanche, Colsom ne tente pas de fuir ou d'arrêter son ami, un comportement qui manifeste la nature extrêmement tragique du personnage. Après son dernier acte d'automutilation, qui l'empêchera de jouer toute sa vie, l'homme a atteint le summum de l'autodestruction.
Avec cette séquence intense, Les Banshees d’Inisherin nous montre les conséquences dramatiques que peut entraîner un conflit apparemment banal et sans intérêt entre des hommes.
Un conflit qui, s'il est d’une part aussi intime et personnelle que celui entre Pádraic et Colsom, est d'autre part aussi universel que la guerre civile qui, dans l'œuvre de McDonagh, reste constamment à l'arrière-plan.
Enfin, la séquence reste particulièrement mémorable pour ceux qui ont vu et apprécié Three Manifestos in Ebbing, Missouri (2017), le précédent film du réalisateur irlandais. Dans cette œuvre aussi, un personnage ébranlé par une perte évacuait sa colère en mettant le feu à un lieu qu'il tenait pour responsable de sa souffrance.
Dans Les Banshees d’Inisherin, la scène de l'incendie représente un point de non-retour tragique pour les deux personnages : pour leur relation en premier lieu, qui sera à jamais caractérisée par le conflit et la colère, mais aussi pour eux-mêmes. Ainsi, comme il l'avait déjà fait dans Three Billboards : Les Panneaux de la vengeance, Martin McDonagh revient nous parler de la vanité de la colère et des conflits humains. Et il l'a fait en produisant l'une des œuvres les plus intenses et les plus originales de l'année.
