If you are familiar with some of the posts I have been writing on my alt account lately, you would probably guess that I have been watching mostly sports. With the college football playoffs just having finished up, the World Cup coming to a conclusion, the NFL playoffs being set, and college basketball season in full swing, you wouldn't be totally wrong.
Despite that, I have also somehow carved out a good deal of time to watch a variety of TV shows and movies. I don't write posts like this very often and I don't think I could stretch a single post on a single show into a proper post, so I decided to throw it all at you at once.
I hope you don't mind.
Let's get started!
Prey
This past Sunday when @mrsbozz went to play Mahjong with her aunties, I stayed at home and I decided to watch a movie. Through a series of events, I discovered that the movie "Prey" was available for me to watch on my Hulu subscription.
If you are familiar with the old Arnold action movie "Predator", Prey would be considered a prequel to that movie. It stars Amber Midthunder as a young Comanche lady who wants nothing more than to be a warrior.
If you have seen any of the other Predator movies, you can probably guess how things play out. I don't think I really spoiling anything when I say the plot is pretty formulaic. When you come into a Predator movie, you kind of know what to expect. At least I do anyway.
Someone made a comment the other day that this movie is breathtaking in 4K. I wouldn't know, I just have a 1080p TV, but I found it beautiful and exciting. I think it is totally worth a watch.
The Bear
Speaking of Hulu, I actually purchased the service a while ago when they were talking about removing ABC and some other channels from YoutubeTV. I forgot I had signed up for it until my wife mentioned something the other day about wanting to watch "The Bear".
The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White from "Shameless" fame as a high end restaurant chef who comes home to take over his brothers failing diner. I had heard a lot of stuff about this show before we actually got around to watching it. @ericvancewalton had written a post about it a while ago and things I have seen online seem to indicate it is a really good representation of what it is like to work in a short order diner (or any restaurant I guess).
Although I had read about it, I wasn't sure how they were going to advance the plot forward based on the premise. It actually was a really engaging watch. Probably some of the best TV I have seen in a while. There is a lot of adult language, so you might want to watch out for that, but I found myself laughing more than I thought I would. It's not a comedy though, there are some heartbreaking moments too. It's a great show and totally worth the watch. You really connect with all of the characters pretty quickly.
I think there are only about six or eight episodes in season 1, but I have heard they are planning on a season 2. I'm looking forward to it.
See
"See" is a show I had noticed an advertisement for, but I didn't really start watching it until @iikrypticsii recommended that I give it a go. I had gotten a free year subscription to Apple TV Plus for being a T-Mobile customer, so I figured why not.
I've actually been really impressed with all of the stuff I have seen on Apple TV+ so far. My wife and I binge watched the period piece Shantaram over Christmas Break, and See has been a great joy to watch.
It stars Jason Mamoa in a role you are probably familiar with if you watched the Netflix show "Frontier". "See" takes place in a world where everyone has lost their sight for generations. When people start being born with sight, they are labeled as heretics and hunted down. The setting is a post apocalyptic world and the downfall of civilization is attributed mainly to the hubris of those with sight.
It has some really deep philosophical and religious undertones. Nothing that they are trying to hammer into you, just interesting views on a situation that I think we can all agree would be difficult to deal with. There are three total seasons of See and I have watched the first two. I need to carve out some time to finish the third and final one at some point.
For me, this isn't one to go into lightly. Some of the things it makes you think about are pretty heavy, like everything else I have talked about, I think it is totally worth the watch though. If you have seen it, you need to let me know how much the Queens voice annoys you in the comments!
Treason
"Treason" is a special run series that is available on Netflix. It is only four episodes long, so you can watch it pretty quickly in an evening if you don't have a ton of interruptions.
It stars Charlie Cox whom I am familiar with from the Daredevil show that was on Netflix before Disney bought out Marvel. It was interesting to hear him with a English accent, but I am guessing maybe that is his real voice and the a American accent was a total sham. Who knew!
It also stars Olga Kurylenko who you might be familiar with from that one Bond movie and various other projects. It's a spy thriller and I can't really talk about it too much without spoiling parts of it. I'll just say give it a watch. Like I said, it only clocks in at about four hours, so it is pretty easy to blast through.
Even though it is short, you still have time to connect and care about the characters. It's gritty and dark, and really well done. I bet you won't be surprised to hear me say it is worth a watch!
I'm going to call it a day, I still have another four or five shows/movies to talk about, but I will save those for tomorrow.
Check back to see what else I have been watching!
