Hello, Hive! After a brief forced hiatus, I'm back with a new Movie A to Z Challenge post and today it's the turn to the letter H. Once again I had to limit myself a bit and could have included at least five or six great movies on this list, but ended up settling on 3 really important ones.
Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright
As soon as I found out about this challenge the first films I got into the mix were the British trio Edgar Wright / Simon Pegg / Nick Frost, which I absolutely adore and I can't even count how many times I've watched Hot Fuzz.
The story of a brave English policeman who is transferred from noisy London to a "quiet" village which turns out to be a very interesting place is a real treat. Sparkling humor, parody of police fighters and serious thrillers, a wonderful mockery of genre clichés, and, perhaps, one of the best final shootouts in cinematic history. It's the bomb!
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Garth Jennings
From an early age I have loved reading, I love science fiction, and a special place in my personal top are the novels of Douglas Adams, which I read as a high school student. Bright characters, unexpected plots, great humor and of course, the atmosphere of a real space adventure!
Of course, I couldn't get past the adaptation and it's really good. Witty, funny, absurd in places, but retaining all the charm and irony of the original novels.
In addition, my birthday falls on Tovel Day, a holiday that Adams fans celebrate, so I just can't not love this movie.
Hereditary, Ari Aster
The new wave of horror films is a special kind of fun and the films of Ari Aster, who has made a reputation for short films dealing with family problems definitely make him one of today's most daring filmmakers.
Unlike the classics, where monsters suddenly pop out from around the corner, Aster goes the other way and his horror is a slow, gooey, almost tangible substance that unhurriedly fills all the available space and turns a creepy family drama about the loss of a child into a powerful occult thriller, echoing Roman Polanski's classic Rosemary's Baby.
The unhurried scenes, the sparse dialogue, the very dark visual style - everything works for atmosphere, and, of course, the film would not have turned out so impressive without Toni Collette, the matchless performance of the inconsolable mother plunging into the abysses of pure madness. The acting is top-notch.
