Hello film and TV lover community, I hope you are doing well, I am here, ready to participate in this CineTV Contest #19 - Favorite space movie, and for this I want to write about Gravity (2013) by Alfonso Cuarón, a film that for me captures in its maximum expression the wonderful and unique that the seventh art, since, with Gravity managed to transmit me feelings that no other art (literature, music...) can transmit me, and I will take advantage of this contest to tell you about it.

Gravity is directed by the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón, the first film I saw of him was "Y Tu Mamá También" in 2001, then he went away from the earthly to surprise me in 2006 with the sci-fi thriller "Children of Men", and then he left the planet in 2013 with Gravity. A space adventure whose cast, small but first-rate, is made up of two characters: Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone and George Clooney as astronaut Matt Kowalski. The two of them are enough for Alfonso Cuarón to tell us this story whose script he wrote with his son Jonás Cuarón.

Hola comunidad amante del cine y la televisión, espero se encuentre muy bien, yo me encuentro aquí, listo para participar en este CineTV Contest #19 - Película espacial favorita. y para ello quiero escribir acerca de Gravity (2013) de Alfonso Cuarón, una película que para mí plasma en su máxima expresión la maravilloso y único que el séptimo arte, ya que, con Gravity logró transmitirme sensaciones que ningún otro arte (literatura, música…) podrá transmitirme, y pienso aprovechar este concurso para comentarles acerca de ello.

Gravity está dirigida por el mexicano Alfonso Cuarón, la primera película que vi de él fue “Y Tu Mamá También” en el 2001, luego se fue separando de lo terrenal para sorprenderme en el 2006 con el thriller de ciencia-ficción “Children of Men”, para después abandonar el planeta en el 2013 con Gravity. Una aventura espacial cuyo reparto, pequeño, pero de primera línea, está constituido por dos personajes: Sandra Bullock como la doctora Ryan Stone y George Clooney como el astronauta Matt Kowalski. Ellos dos son suficientes para que Alfonso Cuarón nos cuente esta historia cuyo guion escribió él mismo junto a su hijo Jonás Cuarón.

The story introduces us to Dr. Ryan Stone and astronaut Matt Kowalski, who are on a space mission to install a state-of-the-art antenna, this must be installed by Ryan Stone, Matt is a veteran astronaut who is there to support and guide Ryan. While they are working with their space suits in the installation of the antenna, they are informed by radio that a satellite exploded near them and there is a danger that fragments of that satellite collide with them, both decide to finish what they are doing, as they were close and they did not see anything alarming near them. But they were wrong and suddenly a large amount of metal pieces begin to collide against them, destroying the ship and killing the crew, leaving only the two of them floating in space.

It is then when our protagonists must find a way to reach the ship that will bring them back to Earth, for this they will have to overcome a series of adversities that will be presented to them, making it seem increasingly difficult and even impossible to return home. Ryan and Matt will go through obstacles in a space adventure that makes the viewer appreciate how beautiful and fascinating outer space is, but also how cold and terrifying it can be.

De que se trata Gravity

La historia nos presenta a la doctora Ryan Stone y el astronauta Matt Kowalski, quienes están en una misión espacial para instalar una antena de última generación, esta debe ser instalada por Ryan Stone, Matt es un astronauta veterano que está allí para apoyar y guiar a Ryan. Mientras ellos están trabajando con sus trajes espaciales en la instalación de la antena, les comunican por radio que un satélite exploto cerca de ellos y existe el peligro de que fragmentos de ese ese satélite choquen con ellos, ambos deciden terminar lo que está haciendo, ya que les faltaba poco y no se veía nada alarmante cerca de ellos. Pero se equivocaron y de pronto comienzan a chocar una gran cantidad de trozos de metal contra ellos, destruyendo la nave y matando a la tripulación, quedando solamente ellos dos flotando en el espacio.

Es entonces cuando nuestros protagonistas deberán buscar la manera de llegar a la nave que lo traerá de vuelta a La Tierra, para ello tendrán que superar una serie de adversidades que se les irán presentando, haciendo parecer cada vez más difícil y hasta imposible volver a casa. Ryan y Matt atravesarán obstáculos en una aventura espacial que eleva al espectador a apreciar lo hermoso y fascinante que es el espacio exterior, pero también lo frio y aterrador que se puede tornar.

The camera movement: Alfonso Cuarón had already given me a sample of his versatility with the camera in "Children of Men", but in Gravity he takes this to another level as far as sequence shots are concerned, mixing them with impossible shots and exploiting to the maximum these scenarios with total absence of gravity.

The performances are excellent and very convincing, Sandra Bullock is extraordinary and proves once again that she is able to give the director whatever he asks for and capture it in a real and moving way. Clooney for his part has no trouble portraying an experienced and determined Matt Kowalski. Both actors successfully layer their characters within extraordinary conditions that totally limit body language, focusing on the face and tone of voice to convey feelings.

The Extraordinary special effects, I repeat, extraordinary special effects, Cuarón set out to take the viewer into outer space, and in this sense he succeeded. It is the opportunity to experience the sensation of what it is like to be up there. People who are fascinated by the subject of outer space, and who wonder what it would be like to be up there? Gravity is the closest answer to reality that we can get. This, together with Emmanuel Lubezki's photography, gives us wonderful stills, breathtaking images of Earth and some of the most beautiful I have ever seen in my life, I know they are not real, NASA has published a lot of images of Earth on Twitter, but the opportunity to see this on a giant screen is unparalleled. To this is added the sound mix and music, Cuarón's handling of the absence of sound in space, (as I understand, because there is no air) is very convincing and plausible, during the whole adventure he performs an elegant and harmonious dance with Steven Price's music, making one of the best sound experiences that can be experienced in a movie theater.

All these factors serve to narrate a story that seems to be very simple, a space mission that goes wrong and you have to find a way to get back home. It would seem that not much can be taken from this, but the script moves with such skill that it turns the narrative into a back-and-forth of extreme situations that cross the line of suspense and terror, with a very well achieved rhythm that keeps the viewer involved in the plot.

La puesta en escena

El movimiento de la cámara: Alfonso Cuarón ya me había dado una muestra de su versatilidad con la cámara en Children of Men”, pero en Gravity lleva esto a otro nivel en lo que plano secuencia se refiere, mesclandolos con planos imposibles y explotando al máximo estos escenarios con ausencia total de gravedad.

Las Actuaciones excelentes y muy convincentes, Sandra Bullock es extraordinaria y demuestra una vez más que está capacitada para darle al director lo que sea que este le pida y plasmarlo de forma real y conmovedora. Clooney por su parte no tiene problemas para mostrar un Matt Kowalski experimentado y determinado. Ambos actores cumplen satisfactoriamente en darle esas capas a sus personajes dentro de unas condiciones extraordinarias que limita totalmente el lenguaje corporal, centrándose en el rostro y el tono de voz para poder transmitir sentimientos.

Los Extraordinarios efectos especiales, repito, extraordinarios efectos especiales, Cuarón se propuso llevar al espectador al espacio exterior, y en este sentido tuvo éxito. Es la oportunidad de poder experimentar la sensación de lo que es estar allá arriba. Las personas que nos fascinamos con el tema del espacio exterior, y que nos preguntamos ¿cómo sería estar allá? Gravity es la respuesta más cercana a la realidad que podemos obtener. Esto junto a la fotografía de Emmanuel Lubezki, no regala fotogramas maravillosos, imágenes de La Tierra impresionantes y de las más hermosas que he visto en mi vida, ya sé que no son reales, que la NASA ha publicado un motón de imágenes de La Tierra en Twitter, pero la oportunidad de ver esto en una pantalla gigante no tiene comparación. A esto se le suma la mezcla de sonido y la música, el manejo que Cuarón le da a la ausencia de sonido en el espacio, (según entiendo, debido a que no hay aire) es muy convincente y verosímil, durante toda la aventura realiza un elegante y armónico baile con la música de Steven Price, haciendo una de las mejores experiencias sonoras que se pueden experimentar en una sala de cine.

Todos esos factores sirven para narrar una historia que parece ser muy sencilla, una misión espacial que sale mal y hay que buscar la forma de volver a casa. Pareciera que a esto no se le puede sacar mucho, pero el guion se mueve con tal habilidad que convierte la narrativa en un vaivén de situaciones extremas que cruzan la línea del suspenso y el terror, con un muy bien logrado ritmo que mantiene al espectador metido en la trama.

What was most appealing to me about Gravity is the reality of it, the costumes, the ships, all the details are not the result of the director's imagination captured on a Storyboard, instead, all those elements are taken from reality, the handling of no gravity, the inertia of the objects in an environment that doesn't interact with it, the light, the absence of oxygen, everything is as it is supposed to be. The opportunity to be able to experience this on a movie screen was what got me head first into this film.

Gravity was conceived in a very meticulous way, an important amount of details that bring realism to the film, the absence of sound in space, the movement of objects colliding, moving in the void, the viewer can understand that after an explosion that propels objects, these objects will be traveling in an environment that does not physically influence them in any way, making them continue traveling through an infinite space or even collide with another object, all that for me is fascinating.

In the credits you can see that Alfonso Cuarón dedicates this film to his mother, and is she an astronaut? Of course she isn't. Gravity is not only a space movie, Gravity is a human and very introspective movie, it represents the vulnerability of our species, how insignificant we are in an infinitely giant environment, but also what we are capable of doing to survive, to get ahead, to leave behind all the darkness and emptiness to be born again and be new people, there is a scene shown as a promotional poster, where Ryan is seen in a fetal position, inside a circle and there are even wires that resemble an umbilical cord, Ryan lets go of the sad past of her life, she is born again and wants to live, she is alone in a dark, cold and extraordinarily lonely environment, without a support and far away from a safe place. The newborn Ryan is going to overcome all these obstacles, by her and for her, it is not for someone waiting for her, it is not to save a loved one, it is for herself, it is about herself reborn into a strong, brave and liberated human being. In the end we see a reborn and baptized Ryan, very exhausted but relieved, who just needs to discard a little go find her destiny.

Gravity is not only my favorite space movie of all time, Gravity is the best space movie of all time, I don't say so, Science says so. If the seventh art could materialize in a being that could speak, it would say: Gravity is the best space movie of all time. I love this movie, those who saw it will understand me and those who haven't seen it have to do it now! It's a 10/10 to which I wouldn't change anything.

¿Por qué Gravity es la mejor película espacial?

Lo que se me hacía más atractivo de Gravity es la realidad de esta, los trajes, las naves todos los detalles no son el resultado de la imaginación del director plasmada en un Storyboard, en lugar de eso, todos esos elementos son tomados de la realidad, el manejo de la no gravedad, la inercia de los objetos en un entorno que no interactúa con ello, la luz, la ausencia de oxígeno, todo es como se supone debe ser. La oportunidad de poder experimentar esto en una pantalla de cine fue lo que me metió de cabeza en esta película.

Gravity fue concebida de forma muy minuciosa, una importante cantidad de detalles que aportan realismo a la película, la ausencia de sonido en el espacio, el movimiento de los objetos chocando, desplazándose en el vacío, el espectador puede entender que tras una explosión que impulsa objetos, estos objetos irán viajando en un entorno que no influye físicamente de ninguna manera sobre ellos, haciendo que sigan viajando por un espacio infinito o hasta chocar con otro objeto, todo eso para mí es fascinante.

En los créditos se puede ver que Alfonso Cuarón le dedica esa película a su madre, y es qué ¿acaso ella es astronauta? Claro que no. Es que Gravity no solo es una película espacial, Gravity es una película humana y muy introspectiva, representa la vulnerabilidad de nuestra especie, lo insignificante que somos en un entorno infinitamente gigante, pero también lo que somos capaces de hacer por sobrevivir, por salir adelante, por dejar atrás toda la oscuridad y el vacío para volver a nacer y ser nuevas personas, hay una escena que se muestra como poster promocional, donde se ve a Ryan en posición fetal, dentro de un circulo y hasta hay cables que semejan un cordón umbilical, Ryan deja ir el pasado triste de su vida, ella vuelve a nacer y desea vivir, está sola en un entorno oscuro, frio y extraordinariamente solitario, sin un apoyo y muy lejos de un lugar seguro. La recién nacida Ryan vas a superar todos estos obstáculos, por ella y para ella, no es por alguien que la espera, no es para salvar un ser amado, es por ella misma, se trata de ella misma renacida en un ser humano fuerte, valiente y liberado. Al final vemos a una Ryan renacida y bautizada, muy agotada pero aliviada, que solo necesita descartar un poco ir a encontrar su destino.

Gravity no solo es mi película espacial favorita de todos los tiempos, Gravity es la mejor película espacial de todos los tiempos, no lo digo yo, lo dice la Ciencia. Si el séptimo arte se pudiese materializar en un ser que hablara, diría: Gravity es la mejor película espacial de todos los tiempos. Adoro esta película, lo que la vieron me van a entender y los que no la han visto tienen que hacerlo ya! Es un 10/10 a la que no le cambio nada.
