Hello film and TV lover community, I hope you are very well, the CineTV Contest # 7 takes us to revisit a genre that although it is true that it has been losing popularity, it is still a worthy representative of the seventh art, and the Western genre has left a very rich legacy and worthy of study. On this occasion I want to talk about One Upon A Time... In The West (original title C'era una volta il West), Italian film of 1968, a jewel of director Sergio Leone, considered by some as the culmination of the Spaghetti Western and one of the best plots of all time.
Hola comunidad amante del cine y la TV, espero que estén muy bien, El CineTV Contest #7 nos lleva a retomar un género que si bien es cierto ha ido perdiendo popularidad, no deja de ser un digno representante del séptimo arte, y es que el género Western ha dejado un legado muy rico y digno de revisión. En esta ocasión quiero hablar de One Upon A Time… In The West (titulo original C'era una volta il West), película italiana de 1968, Joya del director Sergio Leone, considerada por algunos como la culminación del Spaghetti Western.y una de las mejores tramas de todos los tiempos.
Written by Sergio Leone and Sergio Donati based on a story by Dario Argento, Bernardo Bertolucci and Leone himself. And this is the first point to highlight, the joint work of legends of the genre. The film is the combination of four stories converging into one. A man in search of revenge, a prostitute in search of a new beginning, a ruthless killer and an old wolf with no fixed direction.
One Upon A Time... In The West has a narrative that tends to be slow, which is a necessary part of the language chosen by the author, which is extraordinarily compensated by the cinematographic quality, and in this sense it is an exquisite and very emblematic film which leaves a product worthy of study.
Escrita por Sergio Leone y Sergio Donati basada en la historia de Dario Argento, Bernardo Bertolucci y el propio Leone. Y este es el primer punto a destacar, el trabajo conjunto de leyendas del género. El filme es la combinación de cuatro historias confluyendo en una sola. Un hombre en busca de venganza, una prostituta en busca de un nuevo comienzo, un asesino despiadado y un lobo viejo sin rumbo fijo.
One Upon A Time… In The West posee una narrativa que suele ser lenta, lo cual es parte necesaria del lenguaje elegido por el autor, lo que se compensa extraordinariamente con la calidad cinematográfica, y en este sentido es una película exquisita y muy emblemática, dejando un producto digno de estudio.
The prologue of Filme:
Three gunmen arrive at a station, lock up the attendant and wait for the train to arrive. When it arrives, the gunmen position themselves towards it with a threatening attitude ready to shoot, a door opens, a man leaves a parcel, the train starts and the disappointed gunmen get ready to leave. When the train leaves, a man can be seen getting off on the other side of the train. And in a duel they shoot each other. This scene takes about 12 minutes, all with an extraordinary atmosphere, panoramic shots, detail shots, close-ups, cross-cuts, surround sound and a very appropriate music. All a staging that generates tension and desperation for the wait that is resolved in 30 seconds.
Then in another location we are presented with the murder of a family in a scene that may be strong for sensitive people, not because it is explicit violence or gore (It is not) but the act as such is vile and cruel, as these men have no remorse and make no exceptions.
El prólogo de Filme:
Tres pistoleros llegan a una estación, encierran al encargado y esperan la llegada del tren. Al llegar, los pistoleros se posicionan hacia él con actitud amenazante listos para disparar, se abre una puesta, un hombre deja una encomienda, el tren arranca y los pistoleros decepcionados se disponen a partir. Cuando el tren se va se puede ver un hombre que se bajó por el otro lado del mismo. Y en un duelo se disparan entre sí. Esta escena transcurre en unos 12 minutos aproximadamente, todo con una ambientación extraordinaria, planos panorámicos, planos detalles, primerísimos primer plano, travellings, un sonido envolvente y una música muy acorde. Toda una puesta en escena que genera tención y desesperación por la espera que se resuelve en 30 segundos.
Acto seguido en otra locación se nos presentará el asesinato de una familia en una escena que puede ser fuerte para personas sensible, no porque sea violencia explícita o gore (No lo es) pero el acto como tal es vil y cruel, ya que estos hombres no tienen remordimiento y no hacen excepciones.
The characters:
Jill McBain (Claudia Cardinale) A retired Prostitute who after getting married leaves New Jersey to seek a new beginning in a distant town.
Harmonica (Charles Bronson) A mysterious, silent character with great skill with weapons whose motivation will be revealed in the course of the plot.
Frank (Henry Fonda) A ruthless and remorseless contract killer who sees an opportunity driven by ambition.
Manuel 'Cheyenne' Gutierrez (Jason Robards): A gunman accustomed to breaking the law, a fugitive from justice with a valuable bounty on his head.
Los personajes:
Jill McBain (Claudia Cardinale) Una Prostituta retirada que luego de casarse abandona New Jersey para buscar un nuevo comienzo en un pueblo lejano.
Harmonica (Charles Bronson) Es un personaje misterioso, silencioso, tiene gran habilidad con las armas y cuya motivación será revelada en el transcurso de la trama.
Frank (Henry Fonda) Un asesino a sueldo, cruel, despiadado y sin remordimiento, que ve una oportunidad movida por la ambición.
Manuel 'Cheyenne' Gutiérrez (Jason Robards): Es un pistolero acostumbrado a romper la ley, prófugo de la justicia con una valiosa recompensa por su cabeza.
The Plot (No Sopilers):
The central plot is a story of ambition, Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) a corrupt millionaire pulling strings looking to get his hands on a major business deal, using hitman Frank to do his dirty work. For this he is going to directly affect newcomer Jill McBain by stripping her of all hope in her life. The gunman Cheyenne will be forced to get involved, while the mysterious Harmonica watches and acts alone without revealing his intention. All very well put together, in a very clever way to give the viewer timely answers as the story unfolds. The film speaks of ambition, politics, injustice, revenge and redemption, portraying these themes individually in the motivations of its characters, converging seamlessly into a whole. Each character has his or her individual objective causing conflicts with some and at the same time common interests with others. I don't want to be vague in my explanation, I am making a great effort to tell the plot without making spoilers.
The Staging:
The cinematography of this film is masterful, with imposing general shots, a very technical and varied use of the camera to achieve exquisite scenes that are a delight for the viewer's eye. The setting is very well achieved with real locations and a perfect music that complements the enveloping atmosphere that surrounds the viewer. Each of these four characters has their own soundtrack (an enriching detail) which makes the viewer already know who each moment of the story is about. The script is a marvel since it joins all the plots of the Western genre in a single film. In general for me, the staging is one of the best in the history of cinema.
La trama (No Sopilers):
La trama central es una historia de ambición, Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) un millonario corruto que mueve hilos en busca de hacerse con un importante negocio, usando al sicario Frank para hacer sus trabajos sucios. Para esto va a afectar directamente a la recién llegada Jill McBain despojándola de toda esperanza en su vida. El pistolero Cheyenne será obligado a involucrarse, mientras el misterioso Harmónica observa y actúa solo sin revelar su intención. Todo muy bien armado, de forma muy inteligente para darle al espectador respuestas oportunas durante el desarrollo de la historia. La película habla de ambición, política, injusticia, venganza y redención, retratando estos temas de forma individual en las motivaciones de sus personajes, confluyendo a la perfección en un Todo. Cada personaje tiene su objetivo individual causando conflictos con algunos y al mismo tiempo intereses comunes con otros. No quiero ser vago en mi explicación, estoy haciendo un gran esfuerzo para contar la trama sin hacer spoilers.
La puesta en escena:
La fotografía de este filme es magistral, con planos generales imponente, un uso muy técnico y variado de la cámara para lograr escenas exquisitas que son un deleite para el ojo del espectador. La ambientación está muy bien lograda con locaciones reales y una música perfecta que complementa la atmosfera envolvente que involucra al espectador. Cada uno de esto cuatro personajes tiene su propia banda sonora (detalle enriquecedor) lo que hace que el espectador ya sepa de quien se trata cada momento dentro de la historia. El guion es una maravilla ya que junta todas las tramas del género Western en una sola película. En general para mí, la puesta en escena es de lo mejor en la historia del cine.
The end of an era:
When talking about One Upon A Time... In The West, a constant comment is that the end of this film shows the arrival of the train to a distant town, which represents arrival of civilization to the "wild west", which can be read as the end of that era and of the genre as such, for this reason, very personally, this film has a nostalgic and endearing aspect.
El final de una era:
Cuando se habla de One Upon A Time… In The West, un comentario constante es que el final de esta película muestra la llegada del tren a un lejano pueblo, lo que representa llegada de la civilización al “salvaje oeste”, lo que se puede leer como el final de esa esa época y del género como tal, por este motivo, muy personalmente, este filme tiene un aspecto nostálgico y entrañable.
In conclusion
One Upon A Time... In The West is a film that everyone who is a film lover is obliged to see, it is a different experience with which you can learn to appreciate this art and part of its language. For me it is a film that enriches the appreciation and passion for cinema and of course I recommend it a million times and more, It is available on Netflix so I invite you to see it. Of course, to enjoy this experience well you must be willing to get comfortable and give it almost 3 hours of your life, but I think it is well worth it, I give it the very well deserved 8.5/7 that IMDb gives it.
En conclusión
One Upon A Time… In The West es un filme que todo el que se sienta amante del cine está obligado a ver, es una experiencia diferente con la que se puede aprender a apreciar este arte y parte de su lenguaje. Para mí es un filme que enriquece la apreciación y la pasión por el cine y por supuesto que la recomiendo un millón de veces y más, Está disponible en Netflix así que te invito a que la veas. Claro, para poder disfrutar bien esta experiencia debes estar dispuesto a ponerte cómodo y regalarle casi 3 horas de tu vida, pero creo que bien vale la pena, yo le doy el muy buen merecido 8.5/7 que le da IMDb.
