Hello movie and TV lover community, I hope you are very well, today I want to write about Windfall, a movie released on the Netflix platform on March 18, which I just saw and I really liked it because it has several details which I will comment here.
Windfall tells a very simple story: a man breaks into a summer house of a billionaire CEO is alone to steal it, then the owners arrive meeting the intruder and there begins the conflict of the plot. It is directed by Charlie McDowell, who uses a mix of genre, which seems a kind of black comedy that with a twist becomes a thriller that in a very particular way carries with it a social undertone about the class struggle, it reminded me of "Parasite (2019)", but in this case the director does it very subtly.
Hola comunidad amante del cine y la Tv, espero que se encuentren muy bien, hoy quiero escribir sobre Windfall, película estrenada en la plataforma de Netflix el pasado 18 de marzo, la cual acabo de ver y me ha gustado mucho gracias a que posee varios detalles de los cuales comentaré aquí.
Windfall cuenta una historia muy sencilla: un hombre se mete en una casa de verano que de un CEO multimillonario está sola para robar, entonces llegan los dueños encontrándose con el intruso y allí comienza el conflicto de la trama. Está dirigida por Charlie McDowell, quien usa una mezcla de género, que parece una especie de comedia negra que con un giro se convierte en un triller que de forma muy particular lleva consigo un trasfondo social sobre la lucha de clases, me recordó a “Parasite (2019)”, pero en este caso el director lo hace muy sutilmente.
The Cast:
The movie has very attractive small cast, the names of the characters are never said, they are the Intruder, the CEO and the Wife, this for me is a point in its favor, they are:
Jason Segel, who I saw for years in How I Met Your Mother (TV Series 2005-2014). This time he plays the intruder.
Jesse Plemons, who I met in Breaking Bad (TV Series 2008-2013) and more recently in The Power of the Dog (2021). Now he plays the Millionaire owner of the house, a selfish and arrogant man. I really liked that it's a role that takes him out of that quiet, introverted character box.

La película tiene reparto pequeño muy atractivo, nunca se dicen los nombres de los personajes, son el Intruso, el CEO y la Esposa, esto para mí es un punto a su favor ellos son:
Jason Segel, a quien vi durante años en How I Met Your Mother (TV Series 2005–2014). En esta ocasión interpreta al intruso.
Jesse Plemons, a quien conocí en Breaking Bad (TV Series 2008–2013) y más recientemente en The Power of the Dog (2021). Ahora interpreta al Millonario dueño de la casa, un hombre egoísta, soberbio y arrogante. Me gustó mucho que es un papel que lo saca de esa casilla de personaje callado e introvertido.

The beginning of the story:
The film opens with a shot of the house and Hitchcock style music, it shows the credits and the camera takes a 180 degree turn showing the beautiful property, you see an orange grove and a very relaxed man drinking juice and touring the premises, you can intuit that he is the intruder as you see him erasing his fingerprints as he makes his tour. At this point the constant use of fixed shots using the geometry of the structures of the location got me and I was barely 6 minutes into the film. A couple is seen driving along a road, while the intruder goes through the drawers and takes what he considers valuable, a watch, cash, finds a gun but does not take it, implying that he is not violent and much less a criminal by trade. The intruder then hears a vehicle, the couple arrives and the tranquility ends. The intruder tries to leave without being seen, but the wife sees him and he takes her hostage pretending to have a hidden gun to control the CEO and makes the two of them sit in a room of the house.
In this situation the intruder is very nervous and somewhat clumsy, the wife is terrified, but the CEO is the kind of person who knows how to be well under pressure, who seeks to have control of the situation and does not lose his cool. Ten minutes into the film and we're already given the scoop on the story and a quick introduction of the main cast. I gladly settled back in my chair with the certainty that I was going to enjoy this movie.
El inicio de la historia:
La película inicia con un plano de la casa y una música al estilo Hitchcock, muestra los créditos y la cámara da un giro de 180 grados mostrando la hermosa propiedad, se ve un naranjal y un hombre muy relajado bebiendo jugo y recorriendo las instalaciones, se puede intuir que es el intruso al verlo borrando sus huellas digitales mientras hace su recorrido. En este punto el constante uso de planos fijos usando la geometría de las estructuras de la locación me atraparon y apenas iban 6 minutos de película. Se ve una pareja conduciendo por una carretera, mientras el intruso revisa los cajones y va tomando lo que considera de valor, un reloj, dinero en efectivo, encuentra una pistola pero no la toma dando a entender que no es violento y mucho menos un criminal de oficio. Acto seguido, el intruso escucha un vehículo, llega la pareja y se acaba la tranquilidad. El intruso trata de salir sin que lo vean, pero la esposa lo ve y él la toma como rehén simulando que tiene un arma escondida para controlar al CEO y hace que los dos se sienten en una sala de la casa.
En esta situación se nota al intruso muy nervioso y algo torpe, la esposa está aterrada, pero el CEO es el tipo de persona que sabe estar bien bajo presión, que busca tener el control la situación y no pierde la calma. Van 10 minutos de película y ya nos presentaron la primicia de la historia y una rápida introducción del elenco principal. Yo encantado me acomode mejor en mi sillón con la seguridad de que iba a disfrutar esta película.
The CEO practically directs the intruder, he offers more money to take it and leave as soon as possible. The intruder fails in his attempt to tie them up with wires, locks them in a sauna in the pool area, enters the house, takes the gun that was in the drawer and flees. He runs some distance to another property where he has parked his car, gets in happy and relieved, starts the vehicle, but before starting it he notices that there is a camera recording him right in front of him. This makes him return to the house taking the gun he had thrown away on the road and they star in a very funny chase scene among the orange trees that we saw at the beginning, he ends up catching them and taking them back inside the house, there they begin to negotiate a way out where no one gets hurt offering him a certain amount of money.
From here on a series of events will occur that will force them to spend a couple of days in the house, there will be a conversation that will develop the arc of the wife and we will learn about the background of the marriage. The intruder is known to us by his actions and we are told very little about him. There will be a plot twist that will totally change the tone of the story. And the third act twist will lead to a very interesting ending.
El CEO prácticamente dirige al intruso, el ofrece más dinero para que lo tome y se retire lo más pronto posible. El intruso al fracasar en su intento de atarlos con cables, los encierra en un sauna que está en el área de la piscina, entra a la casa, toma el arma que estaba en el cajón y se huye. Corre cierta distancia hasta otra propiedad donde tiene estacionado su auto, se sube alegre y aliviado, enciende el vehículo, pero antes de ponerse en marcha nota que hay una cámara que lo está grabando justo en frente de él. Esto hace que regrese a la casa tomando el arma que había botado en el camino y protagonizan una escena muy divertida de persecución entre los arboles de naranja que vimos al inicio, termina alcanzándolos y llevándolos de vuelta al interior de la casa, ahí comienzan a negociar una salida donde nadie salga herido ofreciéndole cierta cantidad de dinero.
A partir de aquí van a ir ocurriendo una serie de acontecimientos que los obligará a pasar un par de día en la casa, habrá una conversación que desarrollará el arco de la esposa y se nos dará a conocer el trasfondo del matrimonio. Al intruso lo conocemos por sus acciones y se nos dice muy poco sobre él. Habrá un giro en la trama que le cambiará el tono totalmente a la historia. Y el giro del tercer acto desembocará en un final muy interesante.
The characters:
I liked the development of the characters in this film and the director manages to make us empathize with people we know very little about. Details, gestures and phrases make us get to know the motivations of each one even when they don't tell us the details.
The CEO. I imagine that Jesse Plemons when reading this script fell in love with him and gave him an excellent opportunity, I was convinced and I hated that arrogant, petulant and selfish being. He is a man who has made good decisions in his life and has achieved economic success, but he is also a bad person. It makes you question the fairness of the world, what is right and wrong as a person. It makes you think about all those bad people who are doing well in life.
The Wife. From her it establishes her humble origin, she represents the sacrifice a woman makes to achieve economic stability, when she is afraid of the uncertain and with insecurities to face the world alone, she makes me remember a Pink Floy song, as she changed a secondary role in a war for a leading one in a cage, her twist in the plot I liked a lot and I think everything was always about her. Lily Collins has my respects.
The Intruder. Of him what can be speculated is more than what is known. He's not a bad person and I don't need to know the details of his motivations to empathize with him. He can represent injustice, bad decisions, lack of opportunity. And I really liked Jason Segel's work.
The Intruder just like the wife, is in search of a way out in his life, you feel some empathy between them, unlike the CEO who is in search of something else in his life.
Los personajes:
El desarrollo de los personajes en este filme me gusto y es que el director logra hacer que empaticemos con personas de las que sabemos muy poco. Detalles, ademanes y frases nos hacen ir conociendo las motivaciones de cada uno aun cuando no nos cuentan los detalles.
El CEO. Imagino que Jesse Plemons al leer este guion se enamoró de él y que le dio una excelente oportunidad, a mí me convenció y detesté a ese arrogante, petulante y egoísta ser. Es un hombre que ha tomado buenas decisiones en su vida y ha alcanzado el éxito económico, pero también es mala persona. Hace cuestionar la justicia del mundo, lo que es correcto y lo que no como persona. Te hace pensar en todas esas malas personas que le va bien en la vida.
La Esposa. De ella se establece su origen humilde, representa el sacrificio que una mujer hace para conseguir estabilidad económica, cuando le teme a lo incierto y con inseguridades para enfrentar el mundo sola, ella me hace recordar una canción de Pink Floy, ya que ella cambió un papel secundario en una guerra para uno protagónico en una jaula, su giro me gustó mucho y creo que todo siempre se trató sobre ella. Lily Collins tiene mis respetos.
El Intruso. De él lo que se puede especular es más de lo que se sabe. No es mala persona y no necesito saber los detalles de sus motivaciones para empatizar con él. Puede representar injusticia, malas decisiones, falta de oportunidades. Y me gustó mucho el trabajo de Jason Segel.
El Intruso al igual que la esposa, está en la búsqueda de una salida en su vida, se siente cierta empatía entre ellos, a diferencia del CEO que está en la búsqueda de algo más en su vida.
The Staging
What attracts me most when I see a film that takes itself seriously is the love of cinema, the language and the message that the author leaves for reflection and debate, in this sense the film delivers. This film can have a theatrical tone using few characters in a single location, with very attractive shots and the use of light to establish the atmospheric changes. An example is when at the end of the second act a character closes the curtains, the room changes the tone of the lighting and everything changes to a darker tone, not only visually, the whole atmosphere darkens. The music contributes to the atmosphere and that is another point in the film's favor. The performances are up to what the script calls for and a bittersweet denouement very sudden but acceptable from my point of view.
The staging in general gave me a very pleasant product, a fresh proposal in these crazy times of remakes and disappointing sequels. An example that you can do a lot with little.
La Puesta en Escena
Lo que más me atrae cuando veo una película que se toma en serio es el amor al cine, el lenguaje y el mensaje que el autor deja para la reflexión y el debate, en este sentido la película cumple. Esta película puede tiene un tono teatral usando pocos personajes en una sola locación, con planos muy atractivo y el uso de la luz para establecer los cambios de atmosfera. Un ejemplo es cuando al final del segundo acto un personaje cierra las cortinas, la habitación cambia el tono de la iluminación y todo cambia a un tono más oscuro, no solo en lo visual, la atmosfera completa oscurece. La música contribuye oportunamente en la creación de la atmosfera y ese es otro punto a favor del filme. Las actuaciones están a la altura de lo que el guion pide y un desenlace agridulce muy repentino pero aceptable desde mi punto de vista.
La puesta en escena en general me dio un producto muy agradable, una propuesta fresca en estos tiempos locos de remakes y secuelas decepcionantes. Un ejemplo de que se puede hacer mucho con poco.
In Conclusion.
Windfall is an interesting film that doesn't disappoint, with simple but very appealing cinematography that marries the depth of a story told very over the top. It is entertaining and can take you from a very funny moment to a very tense moment. It has comedy and suspense, I think it is my favorite Jesse Plemons performance and from it I will put Charlie McDowell (director) on my watch list. I rate it a 7 / 10 and totally recommend it.
En conclusión
Windfall es una película interesante que no decepciona, con una cinematografía sencilla pero muy atractiva que se conjuga con la profundidad de una historia contada muy por encima. Es entretenida y te puede llevar desde un momento muy divertido hasta otro momento muy tenso. Tiene comedia y suspenso, creo que es mi actuación favorita de Jesse Plemons y a partir de ella pondré al directo Charlie McDowell en mi lista de seguimiento. Yo la califico con un 7 / 10 y la recomiendo totalmente.
