Hi movie lovers like me,
So recently, I think I’ve developed cold feet for foreign movies. Like, I start them and you have me sleeping in the first 20 minutes. But I guess it’s just a phase; or something close to it.
Anyway, I recently watched a Nollywood movie on YouTube; yeah, the new Netflix for Nigerian movie productions. I came across this movie called “BLOOD AND HUSTLE,” and oh, it beat my imagination ten times over.
The plot of the story is very simple.
We have a man called Patrick who falls in love with a lady that calls herself Kendra. She’s the typical Nigerian babe who claimed her parents were living in London, and so she had this British accent, so to speak.
Then we have Nnamdi, who is Patrick’s younger brother. He lives in Owerri and is struggling to make ends meet by selling vehicle spare parts.
One day, he got into unnecessary trouble. He was accused of selling fake spare parts to one of his customers. He got apprehended and later released on the condition that he’d refund the money within 21 days.
He left Owerri and came to Lagos to meet his brother Patrick, hoping he could help him with the money.
Now here’s where it gets interesting; he discovers that the lady, Kendra, is a con artist. A full-blown Nigerian who has never stepped foot in the States before. They both fought verbally, day and night, which led to Kendra setting Nnamdi up and getting Patrick to send him out of his house. But in the end, her lies were exposed, and Nnamdi reunited with his brother.
MOVIE REVIEW
Now, this movie is what you’d call the normal cliché kind of Nigerian film:
***A fake life girl trying to dupe a rich man of his hard-earned money.****
But let me point out the areas where this movie beat my imagination:
Firstly, Patrick was played by one of my favourite actors, Stan Nze. Unlike the Stan Nze I know, he sounded so soft-spoken here. He played the role of a man who just doesn’t like trouble and wants peace of mind. Even as a typical Igbo man, who would normally expect his woman to cook him nice dishes, he didn’t mind when Kendra served him pizza all week. That part had me laughing hard. He just seemed like a helpless man in love.
Secondly, Patrick’s brother, Nnamdi who is the cool guy. Very humorous and so down to earth. Unlike the regular cliché, he wasn’t after his brother’s money. He genuinely needed help. And when he discovered how devious Kendra was, he just wanted to expose her and protect his brother.
Thirdly, just like most Nigerian movie formulas, there was a new assistant Patrick employed in the office. My mind immediately jumped to the idea that she’d become the new girlfriend once Kendra was caught. But that didn’t happen. That little plot twist made me go, “Yes! It doesn’t always have to end the regular way.”
Overall, I’m gonna rate this movie a 7/10. It wasn’t all that spectacular, but it definitely left me feeling satisfied.
