I remember back in the early 2000s, there were several great zombie movies that, for me, really set the standard for what was to come. The most influential ones were 2004's Dawn of the Dead, 2002's Resident Evil, and of course, 28 Days Later, which came out the same year. I remember the last one really hit me because it introduced a new kind of zombie—a faster one—and the cause wasn't some strange virus but rabies. Now, two decades later, this new movie is out, and I can't help but ask myself: does it have anything innovative to offer?

Recuerdo muy bien que a inicios de los 2000 hubo varias películas de zombies muy buenas que para mi marcaron la pauta para las producciones que vendrían. Las más influyentes fueron Dawn of the Dead en el 2004, Resident Evil en el 2002 y por supuesto 28 Days Later en el mismo año. Recuerdo que esta última me impactó porque introdujo una especie de zombies más rápidos, y que no era por un virus extraño si no el de la rabia. Ahora dos décadas después sale esta nueva película y no puedo dejar de preguntarme ¿tiene algo innovador de ofrecer?
I'm asking this because I was a huge fan of The Walking Dead series, and by the final seasons, it had lost its magic for me; it had become repetitive and a bit far-fetched. With that in mind, I thought 28 Years Later would be more of the same. But my curiosity about why it took so long to release and whether it was connected to the first movie got the better of me, and I decided to watch it.
Me hago esta pregunta porque fui fanático de la serie The Walking Dead y ya en las últimas temporadas había perdido el encanto para mi, se había vuelto repetitiva y rebuscada. Con esto en mente creía que 28 Years Later sería algo parecido, pero la intriga por saber porque tardaron tanto para estrenar esta película y saber si guardaba relación con la primera me gano y me dispuse a verla.
A few things about this movie really grabbed my attention. We all know there was 28 Weeks Later before this, but in an interview, the writer, Alex Garland, said he wasn't happy with its direction. He saw an opportunity this time to get closer to the original story. Another cool detail is that it was shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The director, Danny Boyle, used this method to give it that digital camera feel, just like the first movie had.
Hay varias cosas que me llamaron la atención de esta película. Recordemos que esta antes 28 Weeks Later, pero en una entrevista al escrito de la historia Alex Garland declaró que no estuvo muy satisfecho con el enfoque que tuvo, y vio una oportunidad esta vez para acercarse a la historia original. Otro detalle interesante es que fue grabada con teléfonos Iphone 15 pro max, su director Danny Boyle, uso este método de grabación para darle el aspecto de ser grabada con cámaras digitales, así como lo fue la primera película.
As for the plot, it's not directly related to the first one. The only connection is that the virus is still around and Great Britain is the only place in the world where it exists, isolated from the rest. In this story, we meet a kid named Spike and his family, who are surviving on a small island that gets cut off by the rising tide. They have these survival routines and are prepared to fight the infected. This combination feels like a good way to attract a new generation of fans while still pleasing the old ones.
En cuanto a la historia, no guarda relación con la de la primera, lo único es la permanencia del virus y el aislamiento de Gran Bretaña como el único lugar en el mundo donde lo hay. En esta historia conocemos a un chico llamado Spike y a su familia que sobreviven en una pequeña isla que queda aislada con la subida de la marea, con dinámicas que los ayudan a sobrevivir y preparación para luchar con los infectados. Esta combinación de aspectos me parece que funciona bien para atraer a las nuevas generaciones y complacer a los viejos fanáticos.
I don't want to say too much about the movie's message because I'm more interested in talking about its controversial ending. The story is good because it doesn't get bogged down in long explanations about the virus's development; it's a story about a group of people trying to be a family in the complexities of a post-apocalyptic world. We have a man who fails at being a father, a mother who is psychotically ill but is Spike's only emotional connection, and Spike who finally finds his courage when he decides to save his mom.
Con respecto a el mensaje de la película es poco lo que quiero decir porque me interesa tocar más su controvertido final. La historia es buena porque no se concentra en largas explicaciones sobre el desarrollo del virus, es una historia de cómo un grupo de personas intenta ser una familia con las complejidades de un mundo post apocalíptico. Un hombre que falla en su intento de ser padre, una madre enferma psicótica pero es el único vínculo afectivo de Spike, quien finalmente encuentra la valentía cuando decide salvar a su madre.

As for the ending, many people have called it weird and disturbing. I had to do some research because it contains references that only make sense if you're from the UK; for us in the West, they go unnoticed. The ending shows a group of people in colored athletic clothes, organized for combat, who save Spike from a zombie horde. They're led by Jimmy, the same kid we see at the beginning watching Teletubbies on TV with others, but now he's an adult.
En cuanto al final, muchos lo han catalogado de raro y perturbador. Tuve que investigar porque contiene referencias que solo se entienden a la primera si eres del Reino Unido y que para nosotros los occidentales pasan desapercibidas. En el final se nos muestra un grupo de personas vestidas con ropa deportiva de colores, bien organizados en combate que salvan a Spike de una horda de zombies. Están liderados por Jimmy, el mismo que aparece siendo niño al inicio junto a otros viendo los Teletubies en la Tv, pero ahora ya adulto.

The most disturbing part is that in the world of 28 Years Later, which takes place in 2002, the accusations against Savile hadn't been confirmed yet because Great Britain had collapsed from the virus. So, for these people, Savile is still a famous figure, and they don't know the atrocities he committed. They'll likely be committing their own in the next movie, which is set to be released in January, called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
