Just when we thought we'd seen it all in the John Wick saga, the Ballerina spin-off was announced. I distinctly remember the buzz it created among fans, but I also remember wondering if extending this story and building a whole universe around it was truly necessary. Chronologically, this film sits between the events of John Wick 3 and 4, which I think is a smart move. It allows for the inclusion of familiar faces from the saga and provides a more recognizable introduction to a new story. For me, this was the first sign that Ballerina would be a hit.
Ana de Armas brilla en Ballerina - La prueba de que el universo John Wick puede crecer
Cuando creímos haberlo visto todo en la saga de John Wick fue anunciado el spin off de Ballerina, recuerdo muy bien el revuelo que esto causó entre los fans, pero recuerdo haber pensado si era necesario extender esta historia y crear un universo de ella. Esta película se ubica cronológicamente entre los acontecimientos de la 3 y la 4 de John Wick, lo que me parece acertado a fin de incluir figuras conocidas de la saga y darle una introducción a una nueva historia de forma más familiar, esto para mi fue la primera señal de que esta película es un acierto.
The second success of this film is its star, Ana de Armas. The first time I saw her act was in No Time to Die, and I was fascinated. I felt that the combination of her beauty and action skills was a perfect formula, and I longed to see more content like that from her. Her opportunity finally arrived with Ballerina, and I think she does a terrific job. Ana plays Eve, an assassin trained since childhood by the Ruska Roma, the same organization that trained John Wick. She joins the organization because her father is murdered, and as an adult, she seeks revenge—a simple but effective plot.
El segundo acierto de esta película fue su protagonista Ana de Armas. La primera vez que la vi actuar fue en No Time to Die y quede fascinado con ella, me pareció que la combinación de su belleza con la acción fue una fórmula perfecta y desee ver más contenido de este tipo de su parte, al fin llegó su oportunidad con Ballerina, creo que lo hace estupendo. Ana interpreta a Eve, una asesina entrenada desde su infancia por la Ruska Roma, la misma organización que entrenó a John Wick, se hace parte de esta organización porque matan a su padre y cuando se hace adulta busca venganza, una trama sencilla pero efectiva.
Precisely because the plot is straightforward, what really stands out is the action. The sequences are spectacular. As I've said in my previous John Wick reviews, they're perfectly choreographed combat, gunfights, and explosions that fit the film's title perfectly. Ana de Armas trained extensively, which is something I personally admire. We see her fight with all sorts of weapons, and it's clear she had to learn a great deal to perform so well, just as Keanu Reeves did in his time. This sets a precedent for other actors in future installments of the saga.
Precisamente al ser una trama sencilla, lo que mas sobresale es la acción, sus secuencias son espectaculares, lo he dicho en mis reseñas anteriores sobre John Wick, son perfectas coreografías de combate, disparos y explosiones que encajan perfectamente con el nombre de la película. Ana de Armas entreno mucho, es algo que personalmente admiro, le vemos pelear con todo tipo de armas y es claro que tuvo que aprender bastante para hacerlo tan bien, tal cual lo hizo en su momento Keanu Reeves, lo cual marca un precedente para otros actores en futuras entregas de la saga.
But does the film have its own identity? Undeniably, it's clear it's part of the John Wick universe. However, it genuinely feels like it sets the stage for what could be the beginning of a new story where John Wick's appearance isn't necessarily required again. His role was more than just a cameo, yet it didn't overshadow Ana de Armas, which felt really good. In fact, it adds much more excitement and clearly highlights the difference between a seasoned, legendary assassin and one who's just starting in the business but possesses great potential.
Pero ¿la película tiene su propia identidad? Innegablemente se nota que es parte del universo de John Wick, pero si se siente que marca la pauta de lo que puede ser el inicio de una nueva historia donde no sea necesaria nuevamente la aparición de John Wick, en lo que fue más que un cameo, sin embargo, no le quitó protagonismo a Ana de Armas y eso se sintió muy bien, de hecho brinda mucha mas emoción y deja claro la diferencia entre un asesino experimentado y legendario y otro que apenas se inicia en el negocio pero que tiene un gran potencial.
Does it have any downsides? Of course. The main one for me was not making better use of Norman Reedus. The video game Death Stranding 2, where he's the protagonist's image, just came out, and this could have significantly boosted the film's popularity. However, his appearance is brief and feels insignificant when he could have added so much more to the story. Also, the pacing at the beginning of the film is a bit slow, but that's not too bad either, as John Wick 1 started the same way, and look what we have several years later. Despite this, for me, Ballerina is a very solid action proposal, with an incredible soundtrack by the way, and it's absolutely worth watching.
¿Tiene puntos negativos? Claro que si, el principal para mi fue no aprovechar mejor la figura de Norman Reedus, actualmente se acaba de estrenar el videojuego Death Stranding 2 donde el es la imagen del protagonista, esto hubiera sumado mucha mas popularidad a la película, pero su aparición es breve y se siente como de poca importancia, cuando su pudo sumar más a la historia. También el ritmo al principio de la película es algo lento, pero tampoco es algo tan malo porque asi empezo John Wick 1 y vean lo que tenemos varios años después. Pese a esto, para mi Ballerina es una propuesta de acción muy sólida, con un soundtrack increíble por cierto, que absolutamente vale la pena ver.
