I believe I understand why many people found this film appealing. It presents an original story, and it seems that cinema of this kind hasn't been produced in a long time. Most major films today are based on pre-existing narratives—books, remakes, live-action adaptations of animation, and so forth. Sinners undeniably possesses a certain charm; its technical prowess, the IMAX cinematography, its soundtrack, and the numerous layers of story woven into a single narrative make it both unique and peculiar. However, for me, it is far from perfect.

Creo entender porque a muchas personas les gustó esta película, es una historia original y al parecer hace mucho tiempo que no se hace cine así. La mayoría de las grandes películas están basadas en historia ya contadas, libros, remakes, live action que viene de animación, etc. La película tiene su encanto, no lo niego, lo técnico, que sea grabada con IMAX, su banda sonora y la muchas capas de historia dentro de una sola la hacen única y extraña a la vez, pero para mí está lejos de ser algo perfecto.
After watching it, I dedicated myself to listening to opinions and critiques from film experts to see if anyone perceived what I did, and also to understand if it genuinely resonated with many or if they were simply swept up by the media hype. One detail I noticed is that most of those who praise this film are heavily influenced by modern cinema and belong to newer generations with limited knowledge of what constitutes pop culture. This film is, quite literally, pop culture, and much of this style was explored extensively in the past. It's not original in its format—though the story itself is entirely original—it's just that this particular approach hasn't been seen in a long time, and that aspect I did appreciate.
Luego de verla me dedique a escuchar opiniones y críticas de expertos de cine a ver si alguien percibía lo mismo que yo, y también entender si en verdad a muchos les gusto o solo se dejaron llevar por el hype mediático. Un detalles que noto es que la mayoría de quienes alaban está película están muy afectados por el cine moderno y son parte de las nuevas generaciones que poco saben de lo que es cultura pop. Está película es literalmente cultura pop, y de esto se hizo mucho en el pasado, no es nada original, no me refiero a la historia, eso sí es totalmente original, me refiero al formato, lo que pasa es que no se veía desde hace mucho y eso me agrado.
However, what didn't quite captivate me was the story itself—that theme of music connecting past, present, and future, invoking good and bad spirits, felt very much rooted in Voodoo. So, I researched and learned that the blues doesn't directly connect with Voodoo, but rather with Hoodoo, a system of magical practices, beliefs, and folklore indigenous to the Mississippi Delta, the setting of the film and the birthplace of the blues music that predominates in the movie. In fact, some believe there's a reference to Robert Johnson, who is rumored to have made a pact with the devil to gain musical abilities.
Pero lo que no me llamó tanto la atención es la historia, ese tema de la música que conecta con el pasado, presente y futuro invocando espíritus buenos y malos me parecía algo muy del vudú. Así que investigué y aprendí que el blues no se conecta directamente con el vudú, más bien con Hoodoo, un sistema de prácticas mágicas, creencias y folclore, autóctono del Delta del Mississippi, lugar donde se desarrolla la película y es la cuna del blues, música que predomina en la película, de hecho algunos creen que se hace referencia a Robert Johnson que se dice que hizo un pacto con el diablo para obtener habilidades musicales.
I agree with an opinion I found in an article written by Tessaes Kaur for the website “The Gamer,” which points out the abrupt change in genre. The first half works very well as a period horror drama, but then in the second half it abruptly shifts to an “action-packed” bloodbath after Mary's character is bitten by a vampire. I feel that this shift causes the initial complexity that intrigued viewers and kept them engaged in the character development to be lost. For example, why were the twins so feared and respected in the area, or how did cousin Sammy oppose becoming a clergyman in order to play the blues?
Concuerdo con una opinion que encontre en un artículo escrito por Tessaes Kaur, para el portal "The Gamer" que señala el cambio brusco de género, la primera mitad funciona muy bien como un drama de terror de época, sin embargo, luego en la segunda mitad cambia abruptamente a una carnicería y baño de sangre "lleno de acción" después que el personaje de Mary es mordida por un vampiro. Me parece que este cambio hace que se pierda esa complejidad inicial que intrigaba y que te hacía estar atento a la construcción de los personajes, por ejemplo, porque los gemelos eran tan temidos y respetados en la zona, o como el primo Sammy se oponía a ser un clérigo para tocar blues.
In summary, like many critics, I believe that the film is overly ambitious, which is why it addresses so many issues, and perhaps that is what ended up overwhelming me. Another article I read points out that the film is a tribute to 1970s Black Exploitation cinema for representing the Black community in films, which I think is very accurate. but it also clearly pays homage to the blues with the appearance of Buddy Guy at the end. Add to that the themes of racism, vampires, voodoo, entrepreneurship, complex family dynamics, religious issues, etc. It's like summarizing the episodes of a series, putting them together, and turning them into a movie.
En resumen, al igual que muchos críticos creo que la película se pasa de ambiciosa, por eso aborda tantos temas y quizás esa es lo que llegó a saturarme. Otro articulo que lei señala que la película es un culto al cine Black Exploitation de los Años 70 para representar a la comunidad negra en películas, me parece que es muy acertado, pero además también se nota claramente como rinde un homenaje al blues con la aparición de Buddy Guy al final, a eso le sumamos el tema del racismo, los vampiros, el vudú, emprendimiento, dinámicas familiares complejas, temas religiosos, etc. Es como hacer resúmenes de los episodios de una serie, juntarlos y convertirlos en película.
