This year has been a goldmine for great TV series. Early on, we had gems like True Detective, Shogun, Halo, Fallout, The Rings of Power, and The Bear, just to name a few favorites. But as the year winds down, the quality hasn't let up, and I believe The Penguin can easily be called one of the best series of 2024.

Este año nos ha entregado series muy buenas, al principio series como True Detective, Shogun, Halo, Fallout, The Rings of Power, The Bear, etc, solo por mencionar algunas de las que más me han gustado, pero aun no acabamos el año y los estrenos han estado a la altura y creo que The Penguin puede ser llamada una de las mejores series del 2024.
I won't spoil the plot for those who haven't watched it yet, but if you haven't, I'd recommend stopping here because I'm about to dive deep into the story and share some pretty specific opinions, especially about the ending. One of the things that makes this show so great is the character development of Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. At first, his character is a bit ambiguous, but by the final two episodes, his twisted evil and narcissism are crystal clear.
No voy a relatar que trata la serie, pero si no la haz visto te recomiendo no continuar leyendo desde acá, porque voy a trata la trama abiertamente, con opiniones específicas principalmente sobre el final. Creo que uno de los aspectos que hace tan buena esta serie es la construcción del personaje de Oswald Cobblepot conocido como el Pingüino, al principio no está muy claro, pero cuando llegas a los dos últimos episodios destaca su retorcida maldad y su narcisismo.
He doesn't pull any punches; it's pure villainy. You might find yourself sympathizing with him at first, but it doesn't take long to realize he's truly evil. And that's a good thing! It's refreshing to see a show or movie break away from the tired trope of the anti-hero who's destined for redemption. I was getting sick of that. In this regard, DC absolutely blows Marvel out of the water. Their villains are on another level. Thanos? He's a baby compared to The Penguin. I hope you get what I mean.
No se anda con medias tintas, la verdad es maldad pura, al principio puedes llegar a simpatizar con él pero luego notas que es malo de verdad, lo que es bueno porque finalmente una serie o película rompe con el cliché del antihéroe que busca redención, esto ya me tenia cansado. En esto DC es mucho mejor que Marvel, sus villanos lo superan con creces, Thanos es un bebé al lado del Pingüino, espero que entiendan a qué me refiero.
In terms of the cinematography, it's top-notch. I'm not a technical expert, but as a viewer, it feels like watching a movie in a theater. It's so much more than just a streaming show. The experts can chime in if I'm wrong, but it feels like a direct continuation of The Batman movie. I think it's a shoo-in for some awards.
En cuanto a la calidad cinematográfica, debo decir que me parece es de muy buena calidad, no conozco ningún aspecto técnico relacionado, pero como espectador me deja la sensación de estar presenciando una película en el cine, algo que va mucho mas allá de un programa para streaming. Quienes son experto ya nos dirán si esto es así, porque parece literalmente una continuación de la película The Batman, creo que esto le hará ganadora de algunos premios.
The series has definitely sparked a lot of enthusiasm among fans for more content in this new universe that Matt Reeves has created with The Batman. There's already talk of a Joker series, and the "unseen" scene of Batman visiting Arkham Asylum to talk to the Joker about the Riddler has been all over social media, generating a ton of buzz and calls for a future film set in the asylum.
Definitivamente la calidad de la serie a despertado en los fanes, un entusiasmo por ver más contenido relacionado a este nuevo universo que Matt Reeves ha creado con The Batman. Ya se habla de una serie dedicada al Joker, y a salido a relucir en las redes la escena "no vista" cuando Batman visita Arkham Asylum para hablar con el Joker sobre el acertijo, desencadenando una serie de comentarios y opiniones para que en el futuro también haya una película sobre este lugar.
But the show has done more than just excite fans; it's also had a profound emotional impact on many viewers. Colin Farrell himself said in an interview that he was pretty sure the audience wouldn't be rooting for the character by the end of the series. As soon as I heard that, I had a feeling he was going to do something really terrible, and he did. It was tough to watch, but it grounded the character in reality as a truly evil and narcissistic being. That's a testament to the quality of the writing and storytelling.
La serie no solo ha tenido este tipo de impacto en la audiencia, también ha tocado la parte emocional de muchos. El mismo Colin Farrell en una entrevista dijo que seguro la audiencia al finalizar la serie no iba a simpatizar más con el personaje, al escuchar estas palabras de inmediato me imaginé que iba a desvivir a alguien importante, y finalmente lo hizo, aunque fue duro de ver, nos puso en la realidad del personaje, un ser malvado y narcisista, eso habla de la calidad de la historia y narrativa.
And let's not forget the incredible performances from the cast. The series is packed with talent. At first, it seemed like Colin Farrell would steal the show, and for good reason. His mannerisms, his walk, his voice, all combined with that intricate costume that took hours to put on every day – it's remarkable. But Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone was also fantastic, and her character development was admirable. And Deirdre O'Connell as Francis Cobb? The way she transitioned from sanity to senility was simply breathtaking.
Ni hablar de la calidad de la actuación de su elenco, la serie está llena de mucho talento, al principio parecía que Collin Farrell iba acaparar la atención, no es para menos, los ademanes que logró, el caminar, el tono de voz todo eso con un traje que tardaban todos los días 3 horas para colocarle, es destacable, sin embargo, lo hecho por Cristin Milioti como Sofia Falcone es muy bueno, el desarrollo de su personaje fue admirable y ni hablar de Deirdre O'Connell como Francis Cobb, como pasaba de la cordura al estado senil fue impresionante.
Overall, The Penguin has far more positives than negatives. The production quality, the complex characters, the potential to expand the narrative universe, the emotional impact on the audience – it all adds up to one of the best series of the year, and arguably the decade.
