There are people who never tire of pretending to be what they’re not. Others who’ve never even wondered why they should. But what if you were a superhero above the law? Untouchable. Yet also a pariah. That’s exactly what happens to Hancock, the protagonist of the film that shares his name.
You could argue this film isn’t about social pretense or hypocrisy—but the opposite. Hancock has the instinctive urge to stop the bad guys: armed Korean gangsters, bank robbers. Sometimes he saves a beached whale or a man stuck on train tracks. But he cares little about the destruction left in his wake.
He’s not Superman, who fears harming civilians or catches a falling woman in his loving steel arms. On the contrary: Hancock is an alcoholic, rude, and unpleasant. His rescue missions cost taxpayers millions. The city despises him. They demand he leave.
Accusations by the Train
You might ask: Why am I talking about pretense? Let me explain. Amid all that dark humor and infamy, Hancock finds no one like him. Not even a human who shows him affection. He’s good on the outside: unbreakable health despite daily liters of whiskey; bullets can’t pierce him, and he can fly. His strength is superhuman. But inside, he’s broken. Very broken. He lives alone in a mountain-top trailer, doesn’t know his origins, and has no family, friends, or partner. This fuels his dangerous attitude: “I’ll do whatever I want because I have nothing to lose.”
Breaking society’s rules becomes his pastime and vice. Ultimately, he pretends to be the city’s protector to mask the anguish eating him alive.
A verse from Joaquín Sabina’s song describes this psychological type:
How did you end up in a dead-end alley?
You, the best-equipped of all suicidal drivers
It’s fascinating how a drop of water—a single thought—can define the quality and turbulence of an entire inner ocean.
Often, outward pretense stems from self-deception.
In Tarantino’s Death Proof, the girls conclude about their creepy stalker:
Big, noisy car = small penis.
“What comes to mind when you see this?"
"Homo in red.’”
Sometimes, a single act of affection—a simple touch—can tame the monster.
The film Hancock doesn’t aim for the easy thrills of a typical fantasy comedy. Can we ask for more? Yes. Its final dramatic twist—the revelation of why he’s a lone superhero—becomes a metaphor for social and personal life.
Such solitude is built on a lie. Because the one who knows the truth stays silent, like a good, protective mother.
“If Ray finds out about me...”
“...you’re dead.”
Like superheroes, don’t we all have one great strength and one great weakness? Perhaps that’s the film’s message (if there is one):
‘Know your two most critical points, and you’ll fare better.’ This might not solve your problems, but it helps you focus on their origin—at least the part that depends on you.
Hancock Walks Away from His Weakness

Hay personas que no se cansan de fingir lo que no son. Otros que jamás se han preguntado para qué hacerlo. ¿Pero qué ocurriría si fueras un superhéroe y estuvieses por encima de la Ley? Un impune. Al mismo tiempo un paria. Es precisamente lo que le ocurre a Hancock, el protagonista del filme homónimo.
Puedes argumentar que esa película no trata de la simulación social ni de la hipocresía sino de todo lo contrario. Hancock tiene el instintivo impulso de detener a los tipos malos: los coreanos bandidos armados, los asaltantes de banco. A veces salva una ballena varada o un hombre atascado en la vía del tren. Pero todo ello sin importarle demasiado los destrozos que deja a su paso.
No es el Superman que teme dañar a los civiles o recibir en sus amorosos brazos de acero a la chica que cae del rascacielos. Todo lo contrario, Hancock es alcohólico, maleducado y desagradable. Sus actuaciones de rescate cuestan millones al tesoro público. La ciudad lo detesta. Pide que se vaya.
Acusaciones frente al tren
Podrías preguntar por qué entonces estoy hablando de simulación? Te explico. Dentro de toda esa parafernalia de humor negro y mala reputación, Hancock no encuentra a nadie de su misma especie. Ni siquiera un ser humano que le muestre afecto. Está bien por fuera: tiene una salud inquebrantable pese a los litros de whisky que consume a diario; no le penetran las balas y puede volar. Su fuerza es sobrehumana. Pero por dentro está mal. Muy mal. Vive en solitario en una cabaña en la cima de un monte, no sabe de dónde proviene, y carece de familia, amigos y pareja. Eso le conduce a la peligrosa actitud de "haré lo que me venga en ganas pues no tengo nada que perder".
Transgredir las normas de la comunidad se convierte en su pasatiempo y su vicio. En fin, que simula ser un protector de la ciudad para disimular la angustia que lo carcome por dentro.
El estribillo de una canción de Joaquín Sabina describe este tipo psicológico:

Tú, el mejor dotado de los conductores suicidas
Resulta fascinante advertir cómo una gota de agua, un solo pensamiento logra determinar la calidad y la fluctuación de todo un océano interior.
A menudo la simulación exterior tiene como fuente el autoengaño.
En la película Death proof, de Tarantino, las chicas concluyen que su pegajoso perseguidor tiene:
Auto grande y ruidoso = pene pequeño.
"¿Qué te viene a la mente cuando ves esto?"
"Marica vestido de rojo"
A veces solo basta un gesto de afecto, una simple caricia para domesticar al monstruo.
No aspira el largometraje Hancock al fácil disfrute que proporciona una comedia fantástica común. ¿Se le puede pedir más? Se puede. El último de sus giros dramáticos, la revelación final del porqué es un superhéroe solitario constituye una metáfora sobre la vida social y personal.
Tal soledad está basada en una mentira. Pues quien sabe la verdad se la calla, como buena madre protectora.
"Si Ray me descubre..."
"...estás muerto"
Al igual que los superhéroes ¿No tenemos todos un punto muy débil y uno muy fuerte? Quizás sea este el mensaje de la obra (si es que lo hay)
"Conoce tus dos puntos más importantes y te irá mejor". Esto es posible que no te permita resolver los problemas pero sí enfocarte en su origen, al menos la parte que de ti depende.
Hancock se aleja de su debilidad
Gran metáfora, excelente humor, visualidad disfrutable. ¿Cuándo tendremos a Will Smith en la segunda entrega?
