Yesterday, Wednesday, we decided to have a spontaneous date at the cinema. It turned out that we had both been thinking about it - Asia had seen the ads in several places, and I had read positive reviews, including my buddy's, whom I met in the UK. I also saw that at the moment it is earning really good money. The budget was 50 million dollars, and so far (I am writing this on 21.5.2025, 6:00 PM) its revenue is 111 million. I don't remember it having an extensive marketing campaign, so the film is already earning money.
The first part of Final Destination debuted in 2000, becoming an immediate success. No one wondered about the sense of producing parts 2 and 3, which were also successful. The director of this film is James Wang, who directed such films as The One with Jet Li, the third part of Final Destination and... Dragon Ball: Evolution XD. My story with this franchise began with a trip to the cinema with my father. From what I recall, reading the summaries of parts 2 and 3, it was probably part 2. I was 13, 14 years old then, we watched it in the cinema. I remember how before and after the screening, my father told me the plot of the film, not sparing details in the vision of the plane crash. Until about the 1st or 2nd year of my studies, almost a decade, there wasn't a year that I didn't participate in some kind of conversation about it. Since it's a horror movie, we talked mostly about brutal deaths and interesting ideas for various scenes. Almost everyone was delighted with the plot about the plane and the crash. Looking back, I don't remember many film series that would be mentioned, apart from the undisputed mainstream, such as Star Wars, James Bond or Indiana Jones.
I was skeptical about the first opinions of reviewers I follow. Not because they lie or anything like that, it's just that we have different expectations more and more often. Entertainment films that I liked are so-so according to them. And vice versa. By the way, apparently this is an increasingly common problem (and not only in our age group - people between 30 and 40). Before reading their opinions, I read that the latest part of FD is earning very good money, gathering very positive opinions, and recognized film-related sites are directly talking about the revitalization of the famous brand. When I was hesitating whether to suggest this film to my partner, I saw that the buddy I wrote about in paragraph 1, posted his review. I admit, I haven't read it yet, but I will definitely come back to it after this text is published. The production didn't blow me away, but I don't regret spending money on popcorn or the time I spent. The script is polished in terms of dialogue, coherence, consistency and references to previous parts. From the beginning, you can also see how the creators are having fun with the audience and gradually dosing the impressions and tension.
As for the plot, it is purely pretextual. We meet a young couple who spend romantic moments in the Observation Tower converted into a restaurant. The place was put into use a few months before the end of the work. Hmmm, what could have gone wrong? Everything, since it is a horror movie. It turns out that this is another situation in the series: "death was supposed to kill us all that day, so as revenge, it decided to finish its work, but later." When miraculously the survivors create families, the harvest is always greater. After some time, it turns out that this is actually a dream that the real protagonist dreams. Sorry, not a dream, a vision. The girl discovers that her family is also the target of death. And... That's it. In addition, we will learn the origin of a certain hero.
Apart from the Black actor who has been with us since part 1, no role is important. Or to put it differently, because I was imprecise - actors must have some experience and skills, but viewers as a whole usually do not pay attention to this aspect. This is a horror for young people and fans of the slasher genre mixed with a simple action movie. Apart from exceptional situations, the effect will be even a little better when the actors are not perfect. After all, the heroes of such films are usually ordinary people, and we sometimes make such mistakes. In the '80s and '90s, when we had lower technical standards, equipment was more defective, etc., such cases occurred more often. Of course, such extremely exaggerated cases are individual cases, but a head smashed like a cut watermelon after a stone fell into the blade of a lawnmower (powered by an engine that was too powerful or had other defects) and then shot in our direction? Well, I heard a bit about such cases when I was a child and a teenager. Returning to the actors, the protagonist and most of the actors were just ok. They didn't stand out either positively or negatively. Anthony Tiran Todd, whom we know from earlier FD parts, Candyman and many other films (weaker and worse), was a different story. He also worked as a voice actor in many games - Back 4 Blood, DotA2... The actor died last year and the latest part of FD is probably his last. You can see the differences between him and the rest. He is more charismatic and very good at using facial expressions and body posture. Whenever he appears on the screen, he takes it all for himself, to our delight.
If not the actors, what do we pay attention to in such films? Brutal action scenes, and there is no shortage of them here. My favorite is the long sequence in the observation tower. This is because it had the most spectacular deaths. I also liked this calm, comedic mood. Such a sweet idyll that will soon end in a bloody slaughter. I liked the action during the family barbecue a little less. It was spectacular, but quite standard, although even these "simple scenes" make an impression with their bloodiness and refinement. Fans of watching gore and guts can go to the cinema without worries - your brutal fetishes will be satisfied.
Another successful attempt at revitalizing a horror film. Not the best, but Halloween after the first, brilliant part, became a total dump in my opinion (I wouldn't judge it that way if the trilogy had been consistent from the beginning - the first part was "serious", and the subsequent ones weren't). There's also Scream & I know what you did Last Summer, but I've never been a big fan of these series. I know them, I liked some parts, others less, but just like Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Thing I've always treated as "horror elite", these films as "well, they're cool".
It was similar for a long time with Final Destination, until the premiere of the latest part. I very rarely see such a polished and refined script. Sure, it's horror, which is a rather simple genre, but that doesn't mean there are no elements that could be tightened up. I really liked how often the creators played with us. Just like some rich people did with the poor - they played with them like puppets for a while, and then let us SNIFF a can of cola or take a single sip. Just like in Alien: 8th passenger of the Nostromo. The creators trick us several times before a miraculous catastrophe. This is also visible in the numerous references to previous parts. I was happy about 5, maybe 6 times when I saw something familiar - either a fragment of the film or something that I remember from the stories of my father or friends. And above all, during the screening I felt almost all the time that they had used every opportunity to refine the script. There is always something happening, there is no boredom, the pace is perfectly balanced and only towards the end did I start to get a little bored. But I am me, I am not a fan of horror movies. Asia sat and watched with full commitment until the very end. I rate the film 8.5/10. I am still not delighted with this film, but I think it deserves this rating. My objections result only from the fact that I am not a fan of this genre. It is as if I was rating tactical games, which I sincerely hate. The creators of FD: Bloodlines simply deserved it.
Wczoraj, czyli w środę, postanowiliśmy zrobić sobie spontaniczną randkę w kinie. Okazało się, że oboje myśleliśmy nad tym - Asia zobaczyła reklamy w kilku miejscach, a ja przeczytałem pozytywne recenzje, w tym mojego kumpla, którego poznałem w UK. Zobaczyłem też, że na ten moment zarabia naprawdę dobre pieniądze. Budżet wyniósł 50 milionów dolarów, a póki co (piszę to 21.5.2025, godzina 18.00) jego przychód wynosi 111 milionów. Nie kojarzę, by miał rozbudowaną kampanię marketingową, więc film już zarabia.

Miałem wtedy 13, 14 lat oglądaliśmy go w kinie. Pamiętam jak przed i po seansie, tato opowiadał mi fabułę filmu, nie szczędząc szczegółów przy wizji z katastrofą lotniczą. Mniej więcej do 1 lub 2 roku studiów, czyli prawie dekadę, nie było roku bym nie uczestniczył w jakieś rozmowie na jego temat. Jako że to horror, gadaliśmy głównie o brutalnych śmierciach i ciekawych pomysłach na różne sceny. Niemal każdy zachwycał się wątkiem dotyczącym samolotu, jak i katastrofą. Patrząc z perspektywy czasu, nie kojarzę zbyt wielu serii filmowych, które byłby wspominane, pomijając rzecz jasna bezdyskusyjny mainstream, jak np. Star Wars, James Bond czy Indiana Jones.
Podchodziłem sceptycznie do pierwszych opinii recenzentów, których śledzę. Nie dlatego, że kłamią czy coś w tym stylu, po prostu coraz częściej mamy różne oczekiwania. Filmy rozrywkowe, które mi przypadły do gustu, wg nich są takie sobie. I vice versa. Swoją drogą, podobno jest to coraz częstszy problem (i to nie tylko w naszej grupie wiekowej - ludzi między 30, a 40). Przed zapoznaniem się z ich opiniami, przeczytałem że najnowsza część FD zarabia bardzo dobre pieniądze, zbiera bardzo pozytywne opinie, a uznane strony o tematyce filmowej, wprost mówią o rewitalizacji słynnej marki. Gdy się wahałem, czy zaproponować ten film mojej partnerce, zobaczyłem że kumpel o którym napisałem w 1 akapicie, wrzucił swoją recenzję. Przyznaję, jeszcze jej nie przeczytałem, ale na pewno do niej wrócę po publikacji tego tekstu. Produkcja co prawda nie powaliła mnie na kolana, ale nie żałuję pieniędzy na popcorn oraz poświęconego czasu. Scenariusz jest dopracowany pod względem dialogów, spójności, konsekwencji oraz nawiązań do poprzednich części. Od początku widać też, jak twórcy bawią się z widzami i stopniowym dawkowaniem wrażeń oraz napięcia.
Jeśli chodzi o fabułę, to jest czysto pretekstowa. Poznajemy młodą parę, która spędza romantyczne chwile w Wieży Obserwacyjnej przerobioną na restaurację. Lokal został oddany do użytku kilka miesięcy przed zakończeniem prac. Hmmm, co mogło pójść nie tak? Wszystko, jako że to horror. Okazuje się, że to kolejna sytuacja z serii: "śmierć miała nas wszystkich zabić tego dnia, więc w ramach zemsty, postanowiła dokończyć swe dzieło, ale później." Gdy cudem ocaleni stworzą rodziny, zawsze to większe żniwo. Po czasie okazuje się, że to tak naprawdę sen, który śni się prawdziwej protagonistce. Przepraszam, nie sen, wizja. Dziewczyna odkrywa, że celem śmierci jest również jej rodzina. No i... Tyle. Poza tym poznamy genezę pewnego bohatera.
Poza Czarnoskórym aktorem, który towarzyszy nam od 1 części, żadna rola nie jest istotna. Albo inaczej, bo byłem nieprecyzyjny - aktorzy muszą mieć jakieś doświadczenie i umiejętności, ale widzowie jako ogół z reguły nie zwracają uwagi na ten aspekt. To horror dla młodzieży i miłośników gatunku slasher zmiksowany z prostym filmem akcji. Pomijając wyjątkowe sytuacje, to efekt będzie nawet trochę lepszy, gdy aktorzy nie będą idealni. W końcu bohaterami takich filmów z reguły są zwykli ludzie, a my czasem popełniamy takie błędy. W latach '80 i '90 jak mieliśmy gorsze standardy techniczne, sprzęty były bardziej wadliwe etc. to częściej zdarzały się takie przypadki. Oczywiście, takie skrajnie przerysowane, to sprawy jednostkowe, ale łeb rozwalony jak ścięty arbuz po tym, jak kamień wpadł w ostrze kosiarki (zasilane przez zbyt mocny silnik lub mający inne wady), a potem wystrzelił w naszą stronę? No o takich sprawach trochę słyszałem będąc dzieckiem i nastolatkiem. Wracając do aktorów, protagonistka i większość aktorów wypadła po prostu ok. Nie wybijali się ani na plus ani minus. Co innego Anthony Tiran Todd, którego znamy z wcześniejszych części FD, Candyman i wielu innych filmów (słabszych i gorszych). Pracował też jako aktor głosowy w wielu grach - Back 4 Blood, DotA2... Aktor zmarł w zeszłym roku i najnowsza część FD jest prawdopodobnie jego ostatnią. Widać różnice między nim, a resztą. Jego bardziej charyzmatyczny i bardzo dobrze operuje mimiką oraz postawą ciała. Gdy tylko pojawia się na ekranie, zagarnia go tylko dla siebie ku naszej uciesze.
Skoro nie na aktorów, to na co zwracamy przede wszystkim uwagę w takich filmach? Na brutalne sceny akcji, a tych tutaj nie brakuje. Moja ulubiona, to długa sekwencja w wieży obserwacyjnej. Wynika to z tego, że było tam najwięcej efektownych zgonów. Spodobał mi się też ten spokojny, komediowy nastrój. Taka słodka sielanka, która niedługo skończy się krwawą rzeźnią. Nieco mniej spodobała mi się akcja podczas rodzinnego Barbecue. Było efektownie, ale dość standardowo, aczkolwiek nawet te "proste sceny" robią wrażenie swoją krwistością i dopracowaniem. Miłośnicy oglądania juchy i flaków, mogą iść spokojnie do kina - Wasze brutalne fetysze zostaną zaspokojone.
Kolejna udana próba rewitalizacji filmu z gatunku horror. Nie najlepsza, ale Halloween po pierwszej, genialnej części, stał się wg mnie totalnym śmietnikiem (nie oceniałbym go tak, gdyby trylogia była od początku konsekwentna - 1 część była "na serio", a kolejne już nie). Jest też jeszcze Scream & I know what you did Last Summer, ale nigdy nie byłem wielkim fanem tych serii. Znam je, niektóre części podobały mi się, inne mniej, ale tak jak Friday 13th, Halloween, The Thing traktowałem zawsze jako "elitę horrorów", tak te filmy jako "no są spoko".
Podobnie było przez długi czas z Final Destination, do czasu premiery najnowszej części. Bardzo rzadko widzę tak dopracowany i wyszlifowany scenariusz. Jasne, to horror, czyli dość prostacki gatunek, ale to nie znaczy, że nie ma w nim elementów, które można dokręcić. Bardzo podobało mi się to, jak często twórcy bawili się z nami. Tak jak niektórzy bogacze robili z biednymi - bawili się nimi jak kukłami przez jakiś czas, by potem pozwolić POWĄCHAĆ puszkę coli lub wypić pojedynczego łyka. Tak jak w Alien: 8 pasażer Nostromo. Twórcy nas kilkukrotnie podpuszczają przed cudowną katastrofą. Widać to też po licznych nawiązaniach do poprzednich części. Cieszyłem się łącznie z 5, może 6 razy, jak zobaczyłem coś znajomego - albo fragment filmu albo coś co kojarzę z opowieści ojca lub kolegów. No i przede wszystkim, podczas seansu niemal przez cały czas czułem, że wykorzystano każdą okazję, by dopracować scenariusz. Zawsze coś się dzieje, nie ma nudy, tempo jest idealnie wyważone i dopiero pod koniec zacząłem się lekko nudzić. Ale ja to ja, nie jestem fanem horrorów. Asia siedziała i oglądała z pełnym zaangażowaniem do samego końca. Oceniam film na 8.5/10. Nadal nie jestem zachwycony tym filmem, ale uważam że zasłużył na tę ocenę. Moje zarzuty wynikają tylko z tego, że nie jestem miłośnikiem tego gatunku. To tak jakbym oceniał gry taktyczne, których szczerze nie cierpię. Twórcy FD: Bloodlines po prostu sobie na to zasłużyli.
