American cinema is not used to bringing to the big screen real life events, often with a critical sense, especially in the war aspect such as the Vietnam War and its aftermath on a social and human level.
However, he has rarely dealt with the same subject in the form of parody, not simple comedy but parody, that is to say, a serious, tragic subject that is suddenly transformed by the parody itself into a kind of tragicomedy.
It is not easy to do this, and even less so with the war in the Persian Gulf in the middle, especially between the Afghan troops - the guerrillas of that country - and the Soviet forces.
The result is an acceptable product in which Tom Hanks in the role of a private congressman and Julia Roberts playing a typical high society lady are, in fact, not so much.
Irony of fate for Tom Hanks: his character's surname is the same as the one he had given to the basketball found abandoned on the beach when he played the main role (and almost the only one in the film Castaway -Cast Away-) and which ends up becoming his friend in that desolate place, on an island abandoned by civilisation.
Actually, in this case the plot begins with an account of events that actually happened.
Charles Wilson, a wealthy Texan businessman, enters politics like so many others and wins a seat in the US Congress for the Democratic Party with the economic and financial support of Joanne Herring, an ultra-conservative political activist and American businesswoman, but above all deeply anti-communist.
So far so real, even if it is hard to imagine how an ultra-conservative activist could support a Democratic candidate. But then again, sometimes the lives of politicians surpass all fantasies.
Gust Avrakotos -also a real character- was the Head of the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) Task Force, or The Agency as the Americans call it in the Afghan case.
So far, everything is as true as the names themselves, and perhaps the greatest originality of this film is that there are no fantasy or invented names.
With the help and intervention of Avrakotos, Wilson manages to convince Congress to mount a series of operations to supply arms to Afghan rebels - mujahideen - to rebel against the Soviet invasion in the 1980s, which was dubbed in common parlance as Operation Cyclone.
The end results were so surprising and unforeseen that I don't want to give away the ending.
But what the film leaves us with is how, thanks to constant lobbying manoeuvres and supposed threats to international and, above all, American security, the congressman manages to increase step by step the resources allocated to this operation almost exponentially, based on the motto that the aid that the US government should give to countries with problems should not be limited to an initial intervention but should be constant and permanent over time to eliminate the threat represented by the enemy (in this case Russia) through innumerable projects that went beyond the armed intervention itself.
The irony of this operation is that Congress, tired of Wilson's continuous requests, ended up denying him a million dollars to build schools in Afghanistan after having allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to arm the guerrillas and fight the Soviets, knowing that in that country more than half the population are children, survivors of continuous internal and external guerrilla warfare and the elderly are easily influenced by the religious fanatics that the same congressman had helped to arm and later seize power.
This film was released under different names in the Latin American market: in some countries it was shown under the name Juego de Poder, while in others it respected its original name: Charlie Wilson's War.

El cine estadounidense non tiene acostumbrados a llevar a la pantalla grande hechos vividos en la realidad, muchas veces con sentido crítico, especialmente en el aspecto bélico como lo fue la Guerra de Vietnam y sus secuelas a nivel social y humano.
Sin embargo pocas veces ha tratado el mismo tema bajo la forma de parodia, no comicidad simple sino parodia, es decir un tema serio, trágico que se transforma de repente por la parodia misma es una especie de tragicomedia.
No es fácil hacerlo y mucho menos metiendo en medio la guerra desatada en el Golfo Pérsico y especialmente entre las tropas de Afghanistán -la guerrila de aquel país- y las fuerzas soviéticas.
El resultado es un producto aceptable donde Tom Hanks en el rol de un congresista particular y Julia Roberts haciendo de típica dama de la alta sociedad no lo son, en efecto, tanto.
Ironía de destino para Tom Hanks: el apellido de su personaje es el mismo que le había dado al balón de baloncesto encontrado abandonado en la playa cuando interpretaba el rol principal (y casi único en la película Náufrago -Cast Away-) y que termina transformándose en ese lugar desolado en su amigo amigo, en una isla abandonada por la civilización.
En realidad en este caso la trama comienza con el relato de hechos que realmente sucedieron.
Charles Wilson, un rico empresario texano, entra en política como tantos otros y gana una banca en el Congreso de los EE. UU. por el Partido Demócrata con el apoyo económico y financiero de Joanne Herring una activista política ultraconservadora y empresaria estadounidense, pero por sobre todas las cosas profundamente anti-comunista.
Hasta aquí todo es absolutamente real aunque cueste pensar como una activista ultraconservadora pueda apoyar a un candidato demócrata. Pero, en fin, a veces la vida de los políticos supera cualquier fantasía.
Gust Avrakotos -personaje también real- era el Jefe del Grupo de Trabajo de la CIA (Agencia Central de Inteligencia) o La Agencia como la llaman los norteamericanos para el caso afgano.
Hasta acá todo es tan cierto como los mismos nombres y tal vez sea la mayor originalidad de esta película, no hay nombres de fantasía ni inventados.
Con la ayuda e intervención de Avrakotos, Wilson logra convencer al Congreso de montar una serie de operaciones para suministrar armas a los rebeldes afganos -muyahidines- para que se rebelen a la invasión soviética en los años 80 y que fue denominada en la jerga común como Operación Ciclón.
Los resultados finales fueran tan sorprendentes e imprevistos que no quiero revelar el final.
Pero lo que deja el film es, como gracias a constantes maniobras de lobby y supuestas amenzas a la seguridad internacional y, sobretodo, americana, el congresista logra aumentar paso a paso los recursos destinados a esa operación en manera casi exponencial, basándose en el lema que la ayuda que el gobierno de los EE.UU. debe hacer a países con problemas no se debe limitar a una intervención inicial sino que debe ser constante y permanente en el tiempo para eliminar la amenaza que representa el enemigo (en este caso Rusia) a través de innumerables proyectos que iban más allá de la intervención armada propiamente dicha.
Lo irónico de esta operación es que el Congreso, cansado de los continuos pedidos de Wilson, termina negándole un millón de dálares para construir escuelas en Afghanistán después de haberle destinado centenares de millones de dólares para armar la guerrilla y combatir a los soviéticos, sabiendo que en ese país más de la mitad de la población son niños sobrevivientes a continuas guerillas y gerrillas internas y externas y los mayores son fácilmente influenciables por los fanáticos religiosos que el mismo congresista había contribuído a armar y posteriormente tomar el poder.
Este film fue estrenado con diversos nombres en el mercado hispanoamericano: en algunos países se lo exhibió con el nombre de Juego de Poder, mientras que en otros respetó su nombre original: Charlie Wilson's War
