Hello friends of #CineTv today I want to talk about a TV Series that I'm finishing watching and that has caught my attention for the interpretation of its main staff, for the plot treated and for the scenography, which sometimes a little uneven, has accompanied the series in these four seasons.
I am referring neither more nor less than The Good Doctor whose Americanized version we are watching is the sequel of its Korean similar aired between 2013 and 2018 with remarkable success of criticism and television rating.
The main character.
First of all I was impressed by the performance of the first actor who plays the central character Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) affected by two disorders: autism syndrome and savant syndrome.
Rarely does it happen that on the television screen apparently unknown actors manage to give their character such a special strength and charisma as in this case. To such an extent that sometimes the actor is confused with the character and one is left with doubts as to whether the actor is not really affected by this disturbance.
When it is said that the "character enters the flesh and bones of the actor" we can refer to Shaun Murphy-Freddie Highmore and I think without fear of exaggeration.
Terrific performance. I think he is destined -if he doesn't make a mistake in his acting path- to be one of those actors who have marked an era like Peter O'Toole, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day Lewis.
I know the comparison is odious because we are talking about established actors against an actor who is just starting out.
But it's enough for me to remember Peter O'Toole doing Lawrence of Arabia, Jack Nicholson doing Atrapped with No Exit or The Shining and Daniel Day Lewis doing My Left Foot to see in Freddie Highmore a worthy disciple. All characters that demanded great acting concentration. Where gestures were worth more than words. Time will tell if I am very wrong or if I am close to the truth.
Cinema is Cinema and Television is TV, some will say with good reason. Times are different. So are the needs. The time spent in filming a movie is today the time needed to make a complete series of 18-20 chapters a year as The Good Doctor.
But it seems to be a series made not NetFlix style but with a style closer to cinema. With careful environments. Without rushing. And with few visual mistakes.
The plot dealt with.
To tell the truth very few times I have seen treated the theme of autism, either in literature or in film or TV. A few isolated examples and nothing more.
From my recent reading in first person I remember the fourth book of the Millenium saga that after the death of its creator Stieg Larsson was continued with three more volumes by the Swedish writer David Lagercrantz.
And precisely in his first book (fourth in the series) entitled What doesn't kill you makes you stronger he deals with the problem of autism in one of the characters of the novel, in this case the computer technician Frans Balder. Who, apart from suffering from autism, presents symptoms of Savant Syndrome, also known as savant syndrome, as is the case of Dr. Shaun Murphy.
It is a pathology that has only recently been discovered, although the cases are not new at all. It is simply that now its extraordinary capacity is enhanced while in the past people affected by this pathology were confined to mental health centers.
A great merit of the series is to find a topic that is not easy and transform it into something digestible on a daily basis, always emphasizing in all the chapters the same thing: the difficulty of a person with autism to integrate into work and society. And the constant struggle -of these people who make sincerity their main weapon- against hypocrisy, lies, flattery and careerism. And their difficulties to express themselves in the sentimental sphere.
The rest of the characters.
The rest of the characters, according to my modest opinion, have not managed to convince me at all. Maybe because I unconsciously compare them to Freddie Highmore-Shaun Murphy.
In some cases too conventional sentimental stories that seem to occupy the place destined to morbidity in most television series. Deceptions, constitution of new couples, betrayals and other aspects that dissociate it a little from the main theme.
Very coherent and discreet the acting work of his mentor Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) who shows all the signs of an actor with years of work. You don't need to continually appear on screen to do a good job.
Nicholas Gonzalez in the role of Dr. Neil Melendez improves with the passing of the chapters, leaving behind a denialist and overbearing attitude (otherwise quite credible within the medical environment) to acquire a more human facade with the passing of the chapters. Also positive is the readaptation of Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews, main conspirator to access the presidency of the hospital board, to which he arrives as a result of the illness of Dr. Aaron Glassman but which he also resigns when they try to expel Shaun from the hospital just for being autistic and having trouble relating. Declassified to simple surgeon reconsiders the view from another point of view.
The rest of the characters accompany discreetly. The fact that Freddie Highmorede won the Golden Globe for best actor in a TV drama series in 2018 is no coincidence.
Hola amigos de #CineTv hoy les quiero hablar de una SerieTV que estou terminando de ver y que me ha llamado la atención por la interpretación de su principal personal, por el argumento tratado y por la escenografía, que a veces un poco despareja, ha acompañado la serie en estas cuatro temporadas.
Me estoy refiriendo ni más ni menos que a The Good Doctor (El Buen Doctor) cuya versión americanizada que estamos viendo es el sequel de su similar coreana trasnsmitida entre el 2013 y el 2018 con notable suceso de crítica y rating televisivo.
El personaje principal.
En primer lugar me impresionó la actuación del primer actor que encarna al personaje central el Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) afecto de dos disturbos: el sindrome del autismo y el sindrome del sabio.
Pocas veces se da que en la pantalla televisiva actores aparentemente desconocidos logren darle a su personaje una fuerza y un carisma tan especial como en este caso. A punto tal que a veces se confunde el actor con el personaje y a uno le quedan las dudas sobre si el actor no está afectado realmente por este disturbo.
Cuando se dice que el "personaje entra en la carne y en los huesos del actor" podemos referirnos a Shaun Murphy-Freddie Highmore y creo que sin temor a exagerar.
Estupenda interpretación. Creo que está destinado -si no equivoca el camino actoral- a ser uno de aquellos actores que han marcado una época como Peter O'Toole, Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day Lewis.
Se que la comparación es odiosa porque hablamos de actores consagrados contra un actor que está haciendo sus primeras armas.
Pero me basta recordar a Peter O'Toole haciendo Lawrence de Arabia, a Jack Nicholson haciendo Atrapado sin Salida o El Resplandor y a Daniel Day Lewis haciendo Mi Pie Izquiedo para ver en Freddie Highmore un digno discípulo. Todos personajes que exigían una gran concentración actoral. Donde valían más los gestos que las palabras. El tiempo dirá si me equivoco mucho o si me acerco a la verdad.
El cine es Cine y la Televisión es TV dirán algunos con mucha razón. Los tiempos son otros. Las necesidades también. El tiempo empleado en filmar una película es hoy el que se necesita para hacer una serie completa de 18-20 capítulos al año como es The Good Doctor.
Pero parece ser una serie hecha no estilo NetFlix sino con un estilo más cercano al cine. Con ambientes cuidados. Sin apuros. Y con pocos errores visuales.
El argumento tratado.
A decir la verdad muy pocas veces he visto tratado el tema del autismo, ya sea en literatura como en el cine o la TV. Algunos ejemplos aislados y nada más.
De la lectura que hecho de reciente en primera persona me recuerdo el cuarto libro de la saga Millenium que después de la muerte desu creador Stieg Larsson fue continuado con otros tres volúmenes por el escritor sueco David Lagercrantz.
Y precisamente en su primer libro (cuarto de la serie) titulado Lo que no te mata te hace más fuerte trata el problema del autismo en uno de los personajes de la novela, en este caso el técnico informático Frans Balder. Quien. aparte de sufrir de autismo, presenta síntomas del Sindrome de Savant llamado también síndrome del sabio, como es el caso del doctor Shaun Murphy.
Es una patología que se ha descubierto de reciente aunque los casos no sean para nada nuevos. Simplemente ahora se potencia su extraordinaria capacidad mientras en el pasado las personas afectas de esta patología eran recluídas en centros de salud mental.
Un gran méerito de la serie es encontrar un tema no fácil y transformarlo en algo digerible cotidianamente, haciendo siempre en todos los capítulos hincapié sobre lo mismo: la dificultad de una persona con autismo de integrarse al trabajo y a la sociedad. Y la constante lucha -de estas personas que hacen de la sinceridad su principal arma- contra la hipocresía, la mentira, la adulación y el arrivismo laboral. Y sus dificultades para exprimirse en el ámbito sentimental.
El resto de los personajes.
El resto de los personajes, según mi modesta opinión, no me han logrado convencer del todo. Tal vez porque inconscientemente los comparo con Freddie Highmore-Shaun Murphy.
En algunos casos historias sentimentales demasiado convencionales que parecen ocupar el lugar destinado al morbo en la mayor parte de las series televisivas. Engaños, constitución de nuevas parejas, traiciones y otros aspectos que la disocian un poco de la temática principal.
Muy coherente y discreta la labor actoral de su mentor el doctor Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) quien muestra todos los carteles de un actor con años de trabajo. No es necesario aparecer continuamente en la pantalla para hacer un buen trabajo.
Nicholas Gonzalez en el papel del doctor Neil Melendez mejora con el pasar de los capítulos dejando de lago una actitud negacionista y prepotente (por otro lado bastante creíble dentro del ambiente médico) para ir adquiriendo una fachada más humana con pasar de los capítulos. También es positiva la readaptación de Hill Harper como el doctor Marcus Andrews, principal conspirador para acceder a la presidencia del consejo del hospital, a la cual llega como consecuencia de la enfermedad del doctor Aaron Glassman pero a la cual también renuncia cuando pretenden expulsar del hospital a Shaun solo por ser autistico y tener problema para relacionarse. Declasado a simple cirujano reconsidera la vista desde otro punto de vista.
El resto de los personajes acompaña discretamente. El hecho que Freddie Highmorede haya ganado el Golden Globe como mejor actor en una serie de TV dramática en el año 2018 no es una casualidad.
