Plot
The film begins in a near future in which global warming causes the rising sea level to cause the disappearance of most of the planet's coastal cities, which generates an alarming decline in the human population. As a survival measure, large technology companies create "mechas", which are humanoid robots that serve to fulfill certain tasks in society. At a conference, the genius behind one of these companies talks about the possibility of creating a new mecha model that is capable of developing genuine love, a love that children feel for their parents. Some time later, a couple named Henry Swington and his wife Monica are suffering the sudden loss of their only son Martin, who is in suspended animation due to an unknown disease that seems to have no cure. While it is true that the first thing I remember is the curious resemblance it has with the famous Pinocchio play, the particular performance of Haley Joel Osment or its incredible ending; I must also admit that its story and its valuable messages have managed to transcend time and made me appreciate this film even more today. And the fact is that, despite the varied number of stories of robots wishing to become humans, I consider that this particular work manages to reach the deepest part of the heart thanks to how exciting and symbolic it can be in several aspects. Once again, Steven Spielberg manages to capture everyone's attention with his great ability to tell stories that are both fantastic and at the same time profound and quite thoughtful. As a child I did not fully understand its valuable message, but now that I have given it another chance I could notice its similarity to the famous tale of the wooden boy who wanted to be real and thus be truly loved.

Muy pocas son las películas de ciencia ficción y drama que me han impactado tanto desde que era niño, y eso que estoy hablando de un extenso repertorio de películas. Si bien es cierto que lo primero que recuerdo es el curioso parecido que tiene con la famosa obra de Pinocho, la particular actuación protagónica de Haley Joel Osment o su increíble final; también debo admitir que su historia y sus valiosos mensajes han conseguido trascender el tiempo y me hizo valorar más esta cinta al día de hoy. But in this case we are not talking about that, but about the ability of a machine to feel and react to complex and deep emotions such as love. David is, without a doubt, the pinnacle of such technology, but what will make him even more unique is what he will experience after being loved like a real son only to be discarded and abandoned in a world full of chaos, hatred and selfishness. The robot boy will have to survive alone with a teddy bear that will accompany him wherever he goes to find a way to become a real boy so he can return home.
This movie is full of emotions, there is no doubt about that. What at first we felt was something of curiosity and fascination for this future where robots can be seen coexisting and imitating humans, suddenly becomes something sad and uncomfortable at the same time with the appearance and behavior of David in this grieving family. This robot child serves as a surrogate for the son Henry and Monica had. However, after he manages to recover from his strange illness, the love David receives becomes an object of envy from Martin who is a human child. After the abandonment, David experiences the pain, confusion and fear of living in a world where robots are hunted, destroyed and used as an entertainment center for the masses. As you already noticed, we can see different shades, different emotions, what are the two sides of this futuristic and chaotic world. But what prevails in this story from the beginning with Professor Hobby's speech until the end of this 2+ hour long feature film is an emotion that we hear repeated many times incessantly: love. This emotion, this very complex and deep feeling is revealed to us as the goal and the source of our little protagonist's happiness.

Empezando por su historia, debo de mencionar que la idea de mostrarnos un mundo futurista en el cual la misma humanidad ha causado que se encuentre cerca de su extinción debido al calentamiento global y los diversos problemas climáticos es poco más que irónica para mí. Pero si no fuera suficiente con esto, nos plantea también la idea de los mechas, robots humanoides inteligentes capaces de suplir muchas actividades humanas en esta sociedad. Es por esto que nace después el primer robot capaz de amar, un sentimiento que hasta el momento se creía que solo el ser humano era capaz de desarrollar. De nuevo, la Inteligencia Artificial es la protagonista en este caso, un invento innovador y a la vez aterrador para muchos por el gran potencial que esta tecnología posee. Pero en este caso no estamos hablando de eso, sino de la capacidad que puede tener una máquina para poder sentir y reaccionar ante emociones complejas y profundas como lo es el amor. David es, sin duda alguna, la cúspide de dicha tecnología, pero lo que lo hará más único todavía será lo que vivirá luego de haber sido amado como un hijo de verdad para luego ser desechado y abandonado en un mundo repleto de caos, odio y egoísmo. Esta película está repleta de emociones, de eso no hay duda. Lo que al principio sentimos que era algo de curiosidad y fascinación por este futuro en el que se pueden ver a robots conviviendo e imitando a los humanos, de repente se convierte en algo triste e incómodo a la vez con la aparición y la conducta de David en esta dolida familia. Este niño robot sirve como sustituto del hijo que Henry y Mónica tuvieron. Sin embargo, luego de que este lograra recuperarse de su extraña enfermedad, el amor que recibe David se vuelve un objeto de envidia por parte de Martin quien es un niño humano. Luego del abandono, David experimenta el dolor, la confusión y el temor de vivir en un mundo en el que los robots son cazados, destrozados y usados como centro de entretenimiento para las masas. Como ya notaron, podemos ver diferentes matices, diferentes emociones, lo que son los dos lados de este mundo futurista y caótico. And speaking of the protagonist and the different characters that we meet throughout this film, I would like to continue with the way in which they used the Pinocchio tale as the basis for this story. Starting with the creator, Professor Hobby (Gepeto) and his most recent creation: David (Pinocchio). David is created to replace the children, this being his main function when he is received by the Swington family. We see that when he is accepted as their son, Monica shows him that motherly love that he can easily identify with and feel. When David loses this relationship, he feels empty and looks for any way to return home. That is why he becomes engrossed in finding the "Blue Fairy" from the same Pinocchio fairy tale -which is mentioned throughout the film- and asking her to turn him into a real boy. While David proves to be the exemplary and desired son of any mother, the love he seeks to receive can lead him to feel emotions such as envy when competing with Martin or the hatred of being replaced. We can even see how he feels sadness and pain when he learns the sad reality of his existence or that he will not be able to receive love again. We also meet other characters such as Gigolo Joe (Moth) who is a state-of-the-art robot gigolo who shows David the darker and sinful side of humanity. Apart from the apocalyptic futures, robots and chaotic worlds, another thing I really liked about this movie is the novel and original way of recreating the classic Pinocchio in a story like this. There are also those details that show us that this work does not have any censorship regarding certain topics. Or well, you could say that it does have censorship since there is no nudity or sex scenes, only hints of it. The same happens with deaths or murders. There are even scenes in which you can see the typical inhumane treatment given to robots, being used as toys and means of training to be hunted, tortured and eliminated in different ways in a fair. That we see human nature being recreated in its maximum splendor before its treatment with robots in this film is not news to me; however this does not mean that I am not shocked that we see it all through the eyes of a small robot with the appearance of an 11 year old boy. But what fascinated me most about this film is its melancholic and sad tone for the most part. Even at the end, after everything that happened and without giving so many spoilers you can see how David's realization and the fulfillment of his only wish is already long after the very end. Such revelation and ending is more like a demonstration of what our protagonist was really looking for and what he really wanted after so long.

Y hablando del protagonista y de los diferentes personajes que vamos conociendo a lo largo de esta película, quisiera proseguir con la forma en la que utilizaron el cuento de Pincho como base en esta historia. Empezando por el creador, el Profesor Hobby (Gepeto) y su más reciente creación: David (Pinocho). David es creado para sustituir a los hijos, siendo esta su función principal al ser recibido por la familia Swington. Vemos que al ser aceptado como su hijo, Mónica le demuestra ese amor de madre que fácilmente se puede identificar y sentir. Al perder dicha relación, David se siente vacío y busca cualquier manera de poder regresar a su hogar. Es por eso que se enfrasca en encontrar al “Hada Azul” del mismo cuento de Pinocho -que se menciona a lo largo de la misma película- y así pedirle que lo convierta en un niño de verdad. Si bien David demuestra ser el hijo ejemplar y deseado de cualquier madre, dicho amor que busca recibir lo puede llevar a sentir emociones como la envidia al competir con Martin o el odio de ser reemplazado. O bueno, se puede decir que sí tiene censura ya que no se nuestra ningún desnudo ni escenas de sexo, solo indicios como tal del mismo. Lo mismo sucede con las muertes o asesinatos. Incluso hay escenas en las que se puede ver el típico trato inhumano que le dan a los robots, siendo usados como juguetes y medios de entrenamiento para ser cazados, torturados y eliminados de diferentes formas en una feria. Que veamos a la naturaleza humana ser recreada en su máximo esplendor ante su trato con los robots en esta película no es novedad para mí; sin embargo esto no significa que no me impacte que lo veamos todo ante los ojos de un pequeño robot con apariencia de un niño de 11 años. Pero lo que más me fascinó de esta película es su tono melancólico y triste en su mayor parte. Incluso al final, luego de todo lo sucedido y sin dar tantos spoilers se puede ver cómo la realización de David y el cumplimiento de su único deseo es ya mucho después del mismo fin. Dicha revelación y final es más como una demostración de lo que realmente buscaba nuestro protagonista y lo que de verdad quería después de tanto tiempo.

Also the CGI theme, while it can be quite noticeable at certain moments, does not affect the work as a whole. I consider that both the visual work, the good use of effects and the styles of recording and moving cameras play a very good role with the excellent performances of the cast. Also worth mentioning are the excellent sound effects and the incredible soundtrack. Although it does not compare to other robot movies, the background music in many scenes helps to convey emotions such as melancholy in this cinematic masterpiece. In short, this film is perfect if you are looking for something special and full of feelings in the world of science fiction cinema.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/drama genre is concerned.

Con nada menos que con el gran Steven Spielberg a cargo y con casi 100 millones de dólares a la mano, es de esperarse que se puedan notar bastantes detalles visuales en esta cinta. Sobre todo con el diseño variado de los robots (mechas), los autos, las naves, las ciudades inundadas, etc. Los efectos visuales y especiales son de lo mejor para su época, teniendo en cuenta que ya han pasado más de 20 años de su estreno. También el tema del CGI, si bien se puede notar bastante en ciertos momentos, no afecta mucho a la obra en su totalidad. Considero que tanto el trabajo visual, el buen uso de los efectos y los estilos de grabación y cámaras en movimiento juegan un muy buen papel al contar con las excelentes actuaciones del elenco. También hay que mencionar los excelentes efectos de sonido y la increíble banda sonora que tiene la película. Si bien no se compara con otras cintas de robots, el trabajo de musicalización de fondo en muchos escenarios ayuda bastante a transmitir emociones como la melancolía en esta obra maestra cinematográfica. En resumen, esta película es perfecta si buscas algo especial y repleto de sentimientos en el mundo del cine de ciencia ficción.
