I have a secret. And that's the fact that I love musicals. Being a big tattooed dude, people NEVER expect it. I don't know why? Aren't we all more than who we look like?
And that leads me to today's first pick of shows to watch. A musical which is more than it looks like.
Shmigmadoon
Schmigadoon! is a brand new musical comedy on Apple TV+, starring Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael Key (you know it's going to be hilarious), created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, produced by Lorne Michaels, with a pilot directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.
About 2 doctors who get dropped into a literal musical. It starts strong and is great starting episode 1.
What I love about this show? It has a ton of hilarious inside jokes for musical lovers. I literally laughed out loud when they did their nod to "Sound of Music". I'm not talking about LOL. I mean it made me laugh like an idiot. (My cat was very surprised). The show itself ends perfectly at the end of season 1 and doesn't leave you on a cliffhanger. All the episodes are now out so you can binge them without waiting for them to drop weekly (which was how it was first released). It's the most "adult" of all 3 of the shows I've chosen today, but don't worry it's PG. When I say adult, I mean it definitely has a lot of jokes that require you to think. If you likes Book of Mormon, or other cheeky musicals this is place to start.
Girls5eva is a television series for Peacock. To be honest, I've never heard of Peacock till I found this show (It's NBC's Streaming service)It's produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and stars Busy Philipps, Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Paula Pell.
Hands down the show with the catchiest music on the list.
Girls5eva is about a one-hit wonder ‘90s girl group that reunites after a young rapper samples their song. That little sentence was all I needed to add it to my list of "must watches". Who doesn't love the idea of washed up Spice Girls show?
The main theme song is the song that gave them their one hit wonder status and it's straight 90's girl power gold. "We're going to be famous five-eva ,because four-eva's, just two short" And yes they drop in all the appropriate number of fingers while singing.
This show was so good, I immediately went to the Apples store, and Youtube to find the full length videos after watching the season. (Don't do this till you finish though...cuz spoilers).
Super family friendly, but if you grew up blasting 90s girl bands on your radio, this is going to hit you right in the giggles. Watch this show if you and the girlfriends want a romp through 90s memory lane.
Next on the list is Julie and the Phantoms.
Julie and the Phantoms is actually a remake of a show from Brazil. The American version stars Madison Reyes, Charlie Gillespie, Cheyenne Jackson, Sacha Carlson, Savannah May, Jeremy Shada, Owen Patrick Joyner, Jadah Marie, and Booboo Stewart.
About a girl who discovers 3 ghosts who can play music, she becomes their lead singer.
This show is 3rd on my list because while it's amusing it is a little TOO family friendly.
They do a great job of entertaining adults, but honestly it's written and designed for tweens.
If you are like me, you'll just fast forward through all the teen angst and romance bits and get to the fun ghost stuff.
Season 1 is over for this show, and there are talks about season 2, but as of now nothing is confirmed.
Don't worry. Season 1 is good enough to stand alone. It won't leave you unsatisfied.
If you want something to watch with your young kids, Julie and the Phantoms is definitely the best bet.
Hope this list makes my fellow musical loving friends happy, and feel free to comment and post below
