I woke up this morning to clips of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Academy Awards. At first, I didn't pay attention to it and didn't even watch past the slap. I thought it was part of the script because, well, it's an award show, there's usually some funny drama that's all scripted.
Will Smith and Chris Rock are two people I really like for their work and I'd assume they're friends judging by the industry they're in. So I assumed Will was walking up to the stage for some good ol' jabbing after Chris Rock made a joke about his wife.
I was shocked by the slap. It was a darn good slap and kind of hilarious too. I wonder what was running through Chris Rock's mind in the different stages of the slap.
The slap can be seen from several angles and the expression on both of their faces is hard for me to read. I still can't tell if this is scripted or not after watching the video over and over. You can't blame me, these are really good actors and they probably have put on a great show for us all.
Will Smith was laughing at the joke one second, next, he was walking up on stage for the famous slap right after his wife, Jada expressed her displeasure at the joke.
The weird part is that Will Smith first laughed at the joke. It's either he didn't get the joke at first or he only reacted that way because of Jada's reaction.
Comedians talk a lot of shit and everyone's supposed to be alright with it because it's their 'craft'. But there are people that would always be hurt by these jokes and however they react to it cannot be controlled by anyone.
I wasn't pleased with Will's reaction and I think he could have handled it better after the show. I don't think his reaction lessens the effect of the offense taken or takes away Jada's hurt.
It looked to me like Will wasn't okay, I mean the way he moved looked like he was having some sort of episode or something.
Chris Rock on the other hand, handled the situation the way I expected. He was on the job so I didn't expect him throwing hands. He took it in good strides and continued on with the show.
I haven't seen a reaction from Chris Rock yet, but Will, Jada and even their son Jaden, seem proud of the awkward moment of the night.
If Will thought slapping Chris Rock was going to stop the jokes from coming, he thought wrong. It only gets worse from here because now every comedian has been served new material on a platter.
Well, at least he won an Oscar. I low-key feel like everything was staged and the Oscar is proof that Will is a good actor, good enough to make us believe that last night was real. Everybody in the Smith household might hate Chris, but he's sure not keeping Jada's name out of his mouth just yet.
Do you think Will acted appropriately in defense of his wife? Should comedians be cancelled? Does Everybody Hate Chris now?
