Nowadays, many students are very busy round the year and it is not just due to academic commitments alone. In the past, going to school would mean gaining only academic knowledge. However, times have changed and it is needless to say that education has evolved drastically.
Students are increasingly getting proactive and many are participanting in co-curricular activities such as different clubs (photography, gardening), societies (Debating), sports team and even volunteering. This is attributed to a tilted preference towards a more holistic education whereby academic education is important but non-academic development is not less important at the same time.
Many students fail to realize that competition is also a very useful part of holistic development. It is not a waste of their time to participate in competition and in fact, what they gain from competing could be with them for a long time.
Competition plays a vital role in motivating students to perform and excel and offers a lot of rewards than just the winning prizes. Competition offers a chance for participants to gain substantial experience, showcase skills, analyze and evaluate outcomes and uncover personal aptitude. Competition also encourages students to adopt innovative techniques and develop their ideas and skills.
Participating in competition has a lot of benefits:
First of all, competition provides them with a chance to put their theoretical knowledge into practical implications. Many competitions require them to provide a prototype or at the very least come up with a design of a prototype. This requires both their theoretical skills and practical skills and this is something that studying alone cannot help. They need practice, they need exposure, and they need experience.
Secondly, competition can bring their valuable experience that they cannot learn in school, There are only lesser topics that they can be tested on their schemata, but competition opens a new world for their skills to be tested. Furthermore, competing allows them to learn from their fellow competitors. They are able to discover their strength, their weakness and learn how to play on their strength. This is something that will be difficult for them to pick up in school.
While competing, competitors get to meet people who are like-minded, and even with similar interests. This helps them to build their network, especially with people who are relevant and passionate. This may prove to be very useful for them in the future, in case of job searching, entrepreneurial activities or even just having similar hobbies.
In conclusion, it may be said that competing is not a waste of time but an activity that can provide students with a lot of learning opportunities as well as experiences. It will be very beneficial for them to make competitions an integral part of their co-curricular activities.
