What is petroleum? It is a mineral that is found as a dark liquid from under the ground or the sea. It is called on-shore oil if it is under the ground, and off-shore oil if it is found in the sea. Very large machines or equipment’s called rigs are used to pump the oil from the ground, the process of pumping oil out is called drilling.
After it is pumped out, petroleum will be refined to remove the unwanted substances in it, the place were petroleum is refine is called a refinery. Also petroleum can be refined and made into various products like petrol, diesel, kerosene, gas, petroleum jelly, foam and plastic, it can be used as bitumen, bitumen is a liquid use for tarring roads.
After refining, these products are sold to big business men that are called oil marketers, they buy in large quantities and then sell out to owners of filling stations, were we the consumers buy in small quantities.
Gas is sold in tanks of different sizes called cylinders, cylinder is connected to a gas cooker in the kitchen by a narrow tube called a hose. When a country has a very large quantity of petroleum or petroleum products, it can carry them by water in large oil tankers and sell to other countries. This brings a lot of money to the country and its economy.
