Few days ago, my Dad went to fix his gemstone ring. The gemstone was replaced into a new ring however, my Dad did not take the ring back as it had minute defects in the ring part. Although the ring is used only to hold the gemstone in it, but the little defects made him to return and it order the goldsmith the make it again. It is a normal human behavior that a a little defects were ignored, if those thing have enormous benefits. Explaining the phenomenon, Sanskrit has beautifully carved an example of garlic in following lines :
अमितगुणोSपि पदार्थो दोषैणैकेन निन्दितो भवति|
निखिल रसायनमहितो गन्धेनोग्रेण लशुन इव||
Amitagunopi padaartho doshainaikena nindito bhavati.
Nikhil rasaayanamahito gandhenogrena lashuna iva.
Amitagunopi = amita + guno + api.
Amit = immensely.
Guno= virtues, qualities.
Api = even.
Padaartho = substances.
Doshenekena = doshena + ekena.
Doshena = having defect.
Ekena = even one.
Nindito = blamed, defamed.
Bhavati = becomes.
Nikhil = entire, all.
Rasaayan = chemicals.
Mahito = honoured, recognised.
Gandhenogrena = gandhen + ugrena.
Gandhena = by the smell.
Ugrena = powerful.
Lashuna = garlic tuber.
Iva = like. (comparison)
i.e. Sometimes a substance in spite having many good qualities, but having even one deficiency in it, results in it being defamed and censured, like the garlic tuber which contains many beneficial chemicals having therapeutic value, but has a very pungent and foul smell.
In many situations, a single, highly noticeable defect can overshadow or cause the neglect of multiple other, potentially less obvious, quality issues. Humans tend to pay more attention to negative information than positive information, making defects more noticeable and impactful. We have a clear example to explain ;
If a job candidate makes a mistake during an interview, the interviewer might focus on that mistake and overlook the candidate's other skills and qualifications.
This is where it is important for people to consider the positives neglecting the minor flaws.
