This is the story of an institution. That is, of an entity that until recently had enjoyed the best criticism, with the moral and vindictive support of politicians in many parts of the world and also of ordinary citizens, such as you and I, who are reading this post. However, if there is one thing that good journalism achieves, it is unbiased investigation, hard work, but above all, the conviction to find the truth no matter what it is. This leads us to unmask one of the federal agencies of the United States government that has sparked the most controversy since its massification and entry into the drug trafficking exercise. And yes, clearly, I am referring to the DEA or "Drugs Enforcement Agency" whose objective is to counteract the flow of illicit substances but which has seen how one of its longest serving agents (until almost the end of 2020) was as corrupt and criminal as those he was supposed to catch?

Es decir, de un ente, que hasta no mucho había gozado de las mejores críticas, con el apoyo moral y reivindicativo de políticos de muchos lugares del mundo y también del ciudadano común; como lo serías tú y yo, quienes leemos este post. No obstante, si algo logra el buen periodismo, la investigación no sesgada, el arduo trabajo, pero sobre todo, la convicción de encontrar la verdad sin importar cuál sea ésta. Esto nos lleva a desenmascarar una de las agencias federales del gobierno de los Estados Unidos de América, que más polémica ha desatado desde su masificación y entrada en el ejercicio ante el narcotráfico. Y sí, claramente, me refiero a la DEA o "Drugs Enforcement Agency" que tiene como objetivo, contrarrestar el flujo de sustancias ilícitas pero que ha visto, como uno de sus agentes más longevos en ejercicio (hasta avanzado casi todo el 2020) era tan corrupto y criminal como a quienes debía atrapar...
You see, José Irizarry served as an agent, with the explicit mission of infiltrating the most violent, despot, dangerous and multi-million dollar organisations in the history of mankind: yes, the Colombian, Mexican and Latin American drug cartels. However, not only did he fail to meet any of the "objectives" outlined by the DEA, but he ended up benefiting economically and financially from a host of legal benefits; consequences of bureaucratic loopholes that this agency has enacted since the mid-2000s. What's more, Irizarry has only recently come to public attention because he is associated with the ever-envious title of "corrupt DEA agent: party boy and womaniser". But this story is much, much darker.
Now, what did this DEA agent actually do? Well, his misdeeds are quite varied. They range from illicit enrichment, to contracting prostitution services (with multiple girls, from at least 10 countries, and of all ages). Obviously, there were minors...). As you can see, it is what in the jargon of my country (Venezuela) we usually call "a real jewel...". Of course, an ironic tone, to show that a subject has a behaviour, but above all an improper and reprehensible action. But the most striking thing is not that an agent of the law is corrupt. We have seen that, you and I, all over the world. It is that he stood shoulder to shoulder with the worst criminals. He handled their payrolls; he even had a relationship with them.
Verán, José Irizarry fungió como un agente, con la explícita misión de infiltrarse dentro de las organizaciones más violentas, déspotas, peligrosas y multimillonarias de la historia de la humanidad: sí, los cárteles de la droga colombianos, mexicanos y latinoamericanos. No obstante, no sólo no logró cumplir ninguno de los "objetivos" trazados por la DEA, sino que terminó beneficiándose económica y financieramente de un montón de beneficios legales; consecuencias de vacíos burocráticos que esta agencia ha promulgado desde la mitad de la década de los 2000's. Es más, Irizarry, recién ha salido a la palestra pública, debido a que se le asocia con el siempre envidioso título de "agente corrupto: fiestero y mujeriego de la DEA". Pero esta historia es mucho, muchísimo más oscura.
Ahora bien, ¿qué fue lo que sí hizo este agente de la DEA? Bueno, sus fechorías son de las más variopintas. Van desde, enriquecimiento ilícito, hasta contratación de servicios de prostitución (con múltiples chicas, de al menos, 10 países, y de todas las edades. Evidentemente, hubo menores...). Como pueden ver, es lo que en jerga de mi país (Venezuela) solemos denominar como "toda una joya..." Claro tono irónico, para evidenciar que un sujeto tiene un comportamiento, pero sobre todo un accionar indebido y reprochable. Pero lo más llamativo, no es que un agente de la ley se corrompa. Eso lo hemos visto, usted y yo, en cualquier parte del mundo. Sino que estuvo codo a codo con los peores criminales. Manejo sus nóminas; incluso, hasta tenía relación con ellos.
In this sense, José Irizarry was not just another corrupt person. On the contrary, his sphere of influence (and this he said himself) ranged from local politicians (such as several mayors of multiple localities across the southern border of the United States of America) to sportsmen, ministers of South American countries and customs officials. Indeed, today, in light of these events, Irizarry himself has stated that if he goes down, "many more will go down with me'". "Because (I, in reference to himself) have not been the only one. It's a whole system," said the now famous law enforcement officer. This opens up a new perspective on what we understand as the "war on drugs" throughout the Western hemisphere but primarily within the US government.
En este sentido, José Irizarry no sólo fue un corrupto más. Al contrario, su esfera de influencia (y esto dicho por él mismo) va desde políticos locales (como varios alcaldes de múltiples localidades de toda la frontera Sur de los Estados Unidos de América) hasta deportistas, ministros de países sudamericanos y funcionarios de aduanas. De hecho, actualmente, a la luz de estos eventos, el propio Irizarry ha manifestado que si él cae, "muchos más caerán conmigo'". "Porque (yo, en referencia a sí mismo) no he sido el único. Es todo un sistema.", sentenció el actualmente famoso agente de la ley. Esto abre una nueva perspectiva hacia lo que entendemos como la "Lucha contra las drogas" en todo el hemisferio occidental pero principalmente dentro del gobierno estadounidense.
To understand a little better the implication of José's actions, we have to go to one of the most curious statements he has explained, in his most recent interview before being imprisoned (later sentenced by a court of justice in the United States), where he states without hesitation, that "the fight against drugs is a total absurdity. We don't make the slightest difference. Every day so many drugs come in, so much cash and so many millions of dollars are laundered, that it is ridiculous to try to counteract all that. It's a monster. It's totally out of any kind of control," he concludes. While it could be argued that this is a statement that he is about to spend up to 12 years in prison, it is no less true that it reflects an index that we all see every day in the country that consumes the most drugs in the world.
Furthermore, in addition to this, we can also contrast several things that in view of José Irizarry's new statements, are indeed suspicious. Well, the DEA, as a federal agency of the Yankee government, has not published for more than 15 years the records of drug seizures (of all kinds) that it is supposed to prevent from entering the United States. This, coupled with the opioid consumption disaster that has been unfolding in the country of the stars and stripes since the 1990s, gives us a lot to think about, don't you think? Clearly, the "rotten apple" theory that US politicians and authorities are so fond of, I don't think it applies to everything this guy has made clear with his famous capture and statements.
Para entender un poco mejor, la implicación de las acciones de José, tenemos que ir hacia una de las declaraciones más curiosas que ha explicado, en su más reciente entrevista antes de ser encarcelado (posterior sentencia por una corte de justicia en los Estados Unidos), donde afirma sin titubeos, que "la lucha contra las drogas es un absurdo total. No hacemos la menor diferencia. Cada día entra tanta droga, efectivo y se lavan tantos millones de dólares, que es ridículo tratar de contrarrestar todo eso. Es un monstruo. Está totalmente fuera de cualquier tipo de control", finaliza. Si bien, se podría argumentar que ésto lo declara ya que está a punto de pasar hasta 12 años en la cárcel, no menos cierto es que refleja un índice que día a día vemos todos en el país que más drogas consume en el mundo.
Además, aunado a esto, también se puede contrastar varias cosas que en vista de las nuevas declaraciones de José Irizarry, sí que son sospechosas ¿A qué me refiero, en concreto? Pues, la DEA como agencia federal del gobierno yanqui, tiene más de 15 años que no publica los registros de incautaciones de drogas (de todo tipo) que se supone debe prevenir que entren a los Estados Unidos. Ésto, unido al desastre que desde la década de los 90's viene siendo el consumo de opioides en el país de las barras y las estrellas, dan mucho qué pensar, ¿no crees? Claramente, la teoría que tanto aman los políticos y autoridades estadounidenses, de la "manzana podrida" no creo que aplique a todo lo que este sujeto ha dejado en claro con su famosa captura y declaraciones.
What's more, if you ask me, I would say that all the paraphernalia involved in the pseudo-fight against drug trafficking is nothing more than a pantomime that hides much darker issues. Such as financing politicians in all latitudes, buying and selling weapons (again, of all kinds, not just guns or bulletproof vests) and above all, that the drug trafficking industry is one of the motors of world capitalism. It is estimated that the cash flow that sustains this activity is so enormous that it would account for a significant portion of all the world's foreign exchange. While it is true that every now and then some drug "kingpin" is imprisoned, it is only a distraction for the tons and tons of substances that bleed public health throughout North America.
Es más, si me preguntan a mí, diría que toda la parafernalia que encierra la pseudo lucha contra el narcotráfico, no es más que un pantomima que esconde cuestiones mucho más oscuras. Como financiación a políticos en todas las latitudes, compra y venta de armamento (de nuevo, de todo tipo. No sólo pistolas o chalecos antibalas) y sobre todo, que la industria del narcotráfico es una de los motores del capitalismo mundial. Se estima, que el flujo de efectivo que sostiene esta actividad es tan enorme, que tendría una porción significativa de todas las divisas del planeta. Si bien es cierto, que cada cuanto algún "capo" de la droga suele ser encarcelado, no es más que un distractor para las toneladas y toneladas de sustancias que desangran la salud pública de toda norteamérica.
To understand this, from a historical point of view, we cannot leave behind Ronald Reagan and his period of prohibition, conservatism and above all mass incarceration throughout his administration. So is what José Irizarry has done during his career as a DEA agent justifiable? No. But not for the reasons many would believe. There is no such thing as honour, dignity or patriotic duty. These guys (federal agents, elected officials, etc) have been massively denounced forever and few things actually happen.
What makes Irizarry remarkable is that he has acquired the megalomaniacal and compulsive personality of the psychopaths that make up the various drug cartels. That is, spending, luxuries, purchases, "multi-million dollar investments", acquisitions, exposure. That is what made him a target to be "disciplined". And so the DEA is currently dealing with him. Supposedly, to recast and find the vestiges of corruption within US government agencies. However, the evidence of the ineptitude, of the towering institutional corruption but above all evidence, the abysmal failure of the DEA to perform against a scourge that claims billions of lives around the world, should be enough to make us realise that no matter what badge an "official" wears, money does seem to buy everything...
Para entender esto, desde un punto de vista histórico, no podemos dejar atrás a Ronald Reagan y su periodo de prohibición, conservadurismo y sobre todo encarcelamientos masivos, durante toda su administración. Pero a su vez, Nixon, también había echado las raíces del moderno, próspero y siempre demandante mercado de drogas ilícitas en los Estados Unidos. Entonces, ¿es justificable lo que José Irizarry ha hecho durante su carrera como agente de la DEA? No. Pero no por los motivos que muchos creerían. No existe tal cosa como el honor, la dignidad o el deber patriótico. Estos sujetos (agentes federales, funcionarios públicos electos, etc) vienen siendo masivamente denunciados desde siempre y pocas cosas realmente suceden.
Lo que hace a Irizarry destacable es que adquirió la personalidad megalómana y compulsiva de los psicópatas que conforman los distintos cárteles de la droga. Es decir, gastos, lujos, compras, "inversiones multimillonarias", adquisiciones, exposición. Eso fue lo que lo hizo un objetivo a "disciplinar". Y así, actualmente la DEA lo está tratando. Supuestamente, para refundar y encontrar los vestigios de corrupción dentro de las agencias del gobierno americano. Sin embargo, las pruebas de la ineptitud, de la altísima corrupción institucional pero sobre toda evidencia, el abismal fracaso que para la DEA significa el desempeño contra un flagelo que se cobra miles de millones de vidas en todo mundo, debería ser suficiente para darnos cuenta que sin importar la placa que use un "oficial", el dinero sí que parece comprarlo todo...
