Today is 12 October 2022, a crucial day for Latin America, but indeed for America in general. Controversial, full of wounds that still resist healing, where cultural colonialism still has its way within the society of almost all American countries, and also where the greatest uglinesses of humanity are often exposed. And this is relevant for the simple fact that they come from a political vision that is completely full of prejudice, racism, economic backwardness but above all an even worse aggravating factor: right-wing extremism. An event that, unfortunately, is on the rise in many parts of the world. Europe is still the place where we can see this scourge becoming the law, and therefore "normal".
In order to understand this in a more direct way, it is necessary not to leave behind the lessons that history has bequeathed. Europe has the infamous record of being the cradle of the worst ideologies in human history. It is the one that left the most carnage, and the one that produced the worst social, environmental, economic and political tragedies in living memory. The truth is, this does not seem to have taught us too many lessons to avoid repeating it. Although things have improved on the Old Continent in terms of geographical and territorial union, it is no less true that periods of war have continued unabated. It is a constant battlefield (the European continent). Where some present themselves as "heroes" and others as "avengers". This explains, to some extent, conflicts such as the Russian-Ukrainian and Serbian-Croatian conflicts respectively.
Hoy es 12 de octubre de 2022, un día crucial para Latinoamérica, pero en realidad para América en general. Polémico, lleno de heridas que aún se resisten a sanar, donde el colonialismo cultural todavía hace de las suyas dentro de la sociedad de casi todos los países americanos, y también donde las mayores fealdades de la humanidad suelen salir al descubierto. Y esto es relevante por el simple hecho de que vienen de una visión política completamente llena de prejuicios, de racismo, de atraso económico pero sobre todo de un agravante aún peor: el extremismo de derechas. Un suceso, que infortunadamente, está en auge en muchísimos lugares del mundo. Donde Europa, sigue siendo el lugar donde más fuerte podemos ver a este flagelo hacerse ley, y por tanto "normal".
Para poder entender esto de un modo más directo, es necesario no dejar atrás las lecciones que ha legado la historia. Y es que, Europa tiene el infame registro de ser la cuna de las peores ideologías de la historia de la humanidad. La que más carnicería dejaron, y la que produjeron las peores tragedias sociales, ambientales, económicas y políticas que se tenga memoria. La verdad es que, esto no parece haber dejado demasiadas enseñanzas para no volverlo a repetir. Si bien, las cosas han mejorado en el Viejo Continente en cuanto unión geográfica y territorial, no menos cierto es que los períodos de guerra no han parado de continuar. Es una campo de batalla (El continente europeo) constante. Donde algunos se presentan como "héroes" y otros como "vengadores". Esto explica, en cierta forma, conflictos como el ruso-ucraniano y el serbio-croata respectivamente.
But without eliminating the real root causes of this resurgence of right-wing politics, especially in Europe, it is simply impossible for them to resurface from time to time. This, among other things (which I will also explain) are some of the reasons behind the pseudo-right, "conservative" or "centre-democratic" parties, which theoretically seek "territorial unity", "a return to traditional values", and "migration control". No matter where they are located, they are simply a carbon copy of each other. Any of us would think that a nation like Germany would have learned from their terrible mistakes about politics, dominance and being right-wing, but nothing could be further from the truth. While they are not a Fourth Reich, there is an undeniable resurgence of right-wing ideologies, as well as parties and therefore ordinary people who (increasingly) support these "ideas".
Spain, with its rancid right-wing party called "VOX", which does not even try to hide the historical links with Francoism or with members of Franco's dictatorship, but in addition, they feel "proud" and intend to return to that disgusting, retrograde and above all, dangerous way of exercising politics. This phenomenon is not only gaining strength in countries that were once totalitarian or belligerent, but also in those known for their pacifism and neutrality, as well as being a cradle for human rights and an example of tolerance and excellence. This is the case in Sweden, for example, where they also have populists in power. There have even been popular demonstrations, demanding more control over migration, and where the racist ghosts of the past are once again resurfacing.
Pero sin eliminar las causas que realmente originan este resurgimiento de las políticas de derechas, especialmente en Europa, es sencillamente imposible que resurgen cada cierto tiempo. Esto, entre otras cosas (que también explicaré) son algunas de las razones que explican los partidos de pseudo-derecha, "conservadores" o "centro-democráticos", que teóricamente buscan la "unidad territorial", "la vuelta a los valores tradicionales", y "el control migratorio". Sin importar dónde se ubiquen, sencillamente son un calco el uno del otro. Cualquiera de nosotros, pensaríamos que una nación como la alemana, habría aprendido de sus terribles errores sobre política, dominio y ser de derechas, pero nada más alejado de la realidad. Si bien, no son un Cuarto Reich, no menos cierto es que hay un innegable resurgimiento de ideologías de derechas, así como partidos y por tanto; personas comunes y corrientes que apoyan (cada vez más) esas "ideas".
España, con su rancio partido de derechas llamado "VOX", que ni siquiera intenta ocultar las vinculaciones históricas con el franquismo o con miembros de la dictadura de Franco, sino que además, se sienten "orgullosos" y pretenden volver a esa forma asquerosa, retrógrada y sobre todo, peligrosa de ejercer la política. Este fenómeno no solo coge fuerzas en países que alguna vez fueron totalitarios o beligerantes, sino también en aquellos conocidos por su pacifismo y neutralidad, además de ser una cuna para los derechos humanos y un ejemplo de la tolerancia y excelencia. Este es el caso de Suecia, por ejemplo, donde también tienen populistas dentro del Poder. Incluso, han habido manifestaciones populares, demandando más control sobre la migración y donde los fantasmas racistas del pasado, vuelven a surgir.
The Netherlands, Hungary, Austria, France, and recently Italy have also known the influence of right-wing politics. In some of them, as in the Austrian and Hungarian cases, they are already in government, and exercise policies with a biased, divisive and frankly nauseating vision of the times and struggles that have been achieved historically. But in Italy, only a few weeks ago, the new Prime Minister, is linked to the most recalcitrant, archaic and hard-right wing in Europe. Yet she has ascended to power and frankly, we know the potential damage that tends to happen when these characters, many of them wolves in sheep's clothing, actually begin to govern.
The United States experienced this, just in the previous presidential term, where Donald Trump's absurd policies not only set the country of the stars and stripes back on human rights issues, but in foreign policy he locked the country into a kind of "America First" where he clearly did not succeed very well. Accusing his neighbours of being "thugs" and "thieves", and to top it all off, culminating in a historic assault on the National Congress, preceded by a non-recognition of the will of the people in the presidential elections of last November 2020. Not to mention what right-wing policies have done in Latin America, where literally every country in the region had periods of dictatorship, death and disappearances.
Países Bajos, Hungría, Austria, Francia, y recientemente Italia, también han sabido conocer la influencia de las políticas de derechas. En algunos de ellos, como en el caso austríaco y húngaro, ya son gobierno, y ejercen políticas con una visión sesgada, divisionista y francamente nauseabunda en cuanto a los tiempos y luchas que se han alcanzado históricamente. Pero en Italia, hace tan solo pocas semanas, la nueva Primer Ministro, está vinculada a la derecha más recalcitrante, arcaica y de ala dura de Europa. Aún así, ha ascendido al Poder y francamente, sabemos los daños potenciales que suelen suceder cuando estos personajes; muchos de ellos, lobos vestidos de ovejas, efectivamente empiezan a gobernar.
Estados Unidos lo vivió, justo en el período presidencial anterior, donde las políticas absurdas de Donald Trump, no solo hicieron que el país de las barras y las estrellas hayan retrocedido en temas de derechos humanos, sino que en materia de políticas exterior encerró al país, en una especie de "America First" donde claramente no tuvo demasiado éxito. Acusando a sus vecinos de ser "maleantes" y "ladrones", y por si fuera poco, culminando con un histórico asalto al Congreso de la Nación, precedido de un no reconocimiento de la voluntad del Pueblo en las elecciones presidenciales del pasado noviembre de 2020. Y ni hablar de lo que las políticas de derechas han hecho en Latinoamérica, donde literalmente cualquier país de la región tuvo períodos de dictadura, muerte y desaparecidos.
In conclusion, the initial human and cultural conditions in many of the historical strongholds from which right-wing policies emerge have never changed. On the contrary, what has actually happened is that they have mutated. To the point of being a little less aggressive than during their heyday in the 1920s, 1930s and, above all, the 1940s, but they still retain that toxic, alienated and, above all, unrealistic vision of what a state should be and how it should influence the daily lives of millions of people. I would like to claim that the lessons of the past have been learned, that we are better, and that we are moving towards a place where these political options are part of a trodden past, but let's be honest; nothing has changed, we have just seen it a little more made up than usual. Racism, xenophobia, prejudice, economic crises, violence, war; the real characteristics of right-wing politics.
En conclusión, las condiciones iniciales, humanas y culturales de muchos de los bastiones históricos de donde surgen las políticas de derechas, jamás han cambiado. Al contrario, lo que realmente ha sucedido es que han mutado. Al punto, de ser un poco menos agresivas que durante la época de auge, como en los años 20's, 30's, y fundamentalmente 40's, del siglo pasado, pero que aún conservan esa visión tóxica, alienada y sobre todo irreal de lo que es un Estado debe ser y cómo debe influir en el día a día de millones de personas. Me gustaría afirmar que se han aprendido las lecciones del pasado, que somos mejores, y que vamos hacia un lugar donde estas opciones políticas sean parte de un pasado pisoteado, pero seamos honestos; nada ha cambiado, solo lo hemos visto un poco más maquillado que de costumbre. Racismo, xenofobia, prejuicios, crisis económicas,violencia, guerra; las verdaderas características de las políticas de derechas.
