The whistleblowing practice in several countries and several organizations seems to been crippling the basic goal of why whistleblowing ever got promoted in the first place. You know, the whole idea of whistleblowing is to encourage people to speak up about any form of misconduct going on within their environment, especially their workplace.
There are moments when whistleblowers get entitled to momentary benefits and this serves as a good motivation for a good number of people to take that bold step towards unmasking any misconduct going on in their working environment. Other times, people get into whistleblowing to satisfy their conscience and promote standard practice in their working environment.
People fundamentally blow the whistle for several reasons, and when it is followed up accordingly by the right authorities, whistleblowing can turn out to be a very useful tool which can help keep organisations on their toes because they never really know who is watching.
There have been claims and sufficient evidence to back up the fact that the framework for whistleblowing is becoming counterproductive.
That's something worth looking at, right?
I don't know if you have noticed, but we have already gotten to a stage where people use the anonymity attached to whistleblowing to spread lies about organisations to slow down the business of the organisation and possibly ruin their reputation.
While reports made in the form of whistleblowing are taken seriously in some part of the world, some whistleblowers are playing down the seriousness of the whole ordeal by making something similar to prank calls or posts about companies without sufficient fact to back it up. I believe we see most of this stuff on the internet. When things like that are in high trend, it becomes an issue to filter out the genuine whistleblowers from those who do it out of sheer malevolence.
That's the whistleblowing problem that arises due to people's maliciousness, but there is another issue that comes with whistleblowing;
Have you seen or heard of instances where whistleblowers run into problems in their job because they blew the whistle?
Stuff like that happens and this is a whistleblowing problem that mostly occurs due to the structure of a particular country. People working in a country where the whistleblowing structure is not well organized already know that speaking up about any fraudulent activity in their workplace would only land them in trouble. It gets to a point where people lose their job and get blacklisted for blowing the whistle.
As far as I can tell, things seem to be going wrong in several organisations in several countries and only few whistleblowers are stepping up to say shit about those things. The reason is fairly obvious... Those who are honest have noticed that saying the truth will only land them in trouble, and not everyone can afford to pay that price for saying the truth.
This is surely the case in my part of the world. How is the whole whistleblowing culture in your part of the world?
