📏 The First Step: Defining Constraints

As I mentioned in my first post, I’m currently taking a game design course to keep improving my skills as a developer. I’ve been learning a lot of interesting stuff, so I decided to share some of it here as I go.
Today’s topic is something I never really thought deeply about.
Whenever I had a cool game idea, I’d jump straight into development... and, of course, I’d often hit roadblocks later because things didn’t fit, weren’t fun, or just didn’t work the way I imagined.
📏 El Primer Paso: Definir los Límites (Constraints)

Como comenté en el primer post, actualmente estoy haciendo un curso de game design para seguir mejorando mis habilidades como desarrollador, y decidí compartir por aquí algunos conocimientos que me parecieron interesantes.
El tema de hoy es algo que nunca había pensado en profundidad.
Siempre que se me ocurría una idea para un juego, me lanzaba directamente a desarrollarla... y claro, muchas veces me encontraba con que las cosas no encajaban, no resultaban divertidas o no funcionaban como esperaba.
🚧 What are constraints?
Constraints are basically the limits we have when starting a game project.
And I’m not just talking about tech limitations — I mean everything: time, money, team size, tools, experience…
One example from the course really helped this concept click for me:
It’s like building a house without a blueprint.
You can start laying bricks, but chances are you’ll have to tear it down and redo a lot of things later.
This made total sense. Setting clear boundaries is key to avoiding chaos down the line.

Las constraints son básicamente los límites que tenemos al comenzar un proyecto de juego.
Y no me refiero solo a las limitaciones técnicas, sino a todo: el tiempo disponible, el presupuesto, el tamaño del equipo, las herramientas, la experiencia…
Un ejemplo que me ayudó mucho a entender este concepto —y que para mí tuvo muchísimo sentido— fue este:
Es como construir una casa sin planos.
Puedes empezar a levantar paredes, pero lo más probable es que luego tengas que derribar todo y rehacerlo.
Así de importante es definir bien los límites desde el inicio.
❓Key Questions I Learned to Ask
One of the first things the course suggests is to ask yourself these questions before you do any design work:
🔍 Development Constraints
Do I have a budget? How much?
What’s the deadline?
Am I working solo or with a team?
What are our strengths and weaknesses?
Where and how are we going to develop this?
And this isn’t just for client work. Even if you’re making something for fun, setting these boundaries can save you from endless scope creep or burnout.
🎯 Design Constraints
Who is the target player?
Do I already have a genre in mind?
Are there features I really want to include?
What platform is it for?
How will it be distributed?
Is it single-player or online?
Answering these questions helps you understand your game before it exists — and that makes everything else smoother.
❓ Preguntas clave que aprendí a hacerme
Una de las primeras cosas que plantea el curso es que antes de diseñar nada, te tomes un momento para responder estas preguntas:
🔍 Limitaciones del desarrollo
¿Tengo un presupuesto? ¿De cuánto?
¿Cuál es la fecha límite?
¿Estoy trabajando solo o con otras personas?
¿Cuáles son nuestras fortalezas y debilidades como equipo?
¿Dónde y cómo vamos a desarrollar el juego?
Y esto no aplica únicamente si estás trabajando con un cliente.
Incluso si estás haciendo un juego personal, tener claro esto desde el principio puede evitar que el proyecto se vuelva interminable o demasiado ambicioso.
🎯 Limitaciones del diseño
¿A qué tipo de jugador quiero llegar?
¿Tengo un género en mente?
¿Qué características quiero que sí o sí tenga el juego?
¿En qué plataforma se va a jugar?
¿Cómo se va a distribuir?
¿Será para un solo jugador o multijugador, en línea?
Responder a estas preguntas te ayuda a entender tu juego antes de que exista, lo que hace que el proceso de desarrollo sea mucho más fluido.
🧭 Planning: Something I Used to Skip (Now I Don’t)
I’ll admit it: I never planned much before.
But now I get it — having a clear plan makes a huge difference.
It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should give you direction.
For example:
Break the dev process into milestones.
Set soft deadlines.
Use a system to stay organized (I’m using Notion, but use whatever works for you).

Antes no le daba mucha importancia a esto. Pero ahora entiendo que tener una planificación clara hace una gran diferencia.
No tiene que ser perfecta, pero sí debe darte una dirección.
Por ejemplo:
Dividir el desarrollo en etapas o hitos (milestones)
Establecer fechas límite (aunque sean flexibles)
Usar alguna herramienta para organizarte (yo uso Notion, pero hay muchas opciones)
🔥 Why Am I Making This Game?
Another great question from the course:
What’s your motivation for making this game?
People create for different reasons. Here are a few I relate to:
Design: You want to explore a mechanic or tell a story.
Market: You see an opportunity or niche.
Tech: You want to test out a new tool (like VR, AI, etc.).
Art: You want to express a certain visual style or idea.
There’s no wrong answer — just be clear about your why.
🔥 ¿Por qué quiero hacer este juego?
Otra pregunta que me pareció muy valiosa del curso fue:
¿Cuál es mi motivación para crear este juego?
Cada persona tiene razones distintas para crear. Algunas de las más comunes son:
Diseño: quieres experimentar con una mecánica o contar una historia.
Mercado: detectaste una oportunidad o un nicho.
Tecnología: te interesa probar una herramienta nueva (como VR o IA).
Arte: buscas explorar un estilo visual o expresar una idea estética.
No hay una respuesta correcta. Lo importante es tener claro tu por qué.
🌍 External Factors That Changed My Perspective
📌 Region
Where will people play your game?
Culture, habits, and popular devices vary a lot by region. I never paid much attention to this before, but it makes sense.
💰 Monetization
Your business model heavily affects game design.
A premium game is very different from a free one with ads or IAPs.
It changes how you design progression, difficulty, rewards...
🧟♂️ Clones
This one hit me hard. When a game gets popular, it’s followed by a wave of clones.
But copying something successful isn’t usually the best move.
It’s better to find your own angle and innovate.

📌 Región
¿Dónde se va a jugar tu juego?
Las costumbres, preferencias y dispositivos más populares pueden variar bastante de una región a otra. Es algo que antes no tenía tan en cuenta y que ahora me parece fundamental.
💰 Monetización
El modelo de negocio cambia completamente el diseño.
No es lo mismo desarrollar un juego de pago único que uno gratuito con anuncios o microtransacciones.
Eso impacta en la progresión, la dificultad, las recompensas...
🧟♂️ Clones
Este punto me llamó mucho la atención.
Cuando un juego se vuelve popular, aparecen decenas (o cientos) de clones.
Pero hacer una copia más rara vez funciona.
Es mejor buscar tu propio ángulo, tu diferencia.
👁️ Vision: Something I Want to Keep Building
The course also talks about having “vision,” not just focusing on today.
This part really stuck with me.
⏳ The Past
- What games were successful 5–10 years ago?
People love nostalgia. Many just want to relive those experiences — and new audiences are discovering them too.
🕰 The Present
- What’s trending now?
- Which genres, mechanics, and aesthetics are connecting with players?
🔮 The Future
- What’s coming next in tech, culture, media?
- What kind of player will you be in five years?
- What kinds of games will you want to play — or make?
This mindset helped me realize that combining past, present, and future can lead to something really special in game design.
👁️ Visión: algo que quiero seguir desarrollando
En el curso también hablan de tener “visión”, y no limitarse solo a mirar el presente.
Esta parte me pareció muy valiosa.
⏳ El pasado
¿Qué juegos fueron exitosos hace 5 o 10 años?
La nostalgia tiene mucho poder. Hay quienes solo quieren volver a vivir esas experiencias —y también hay nuevas generaciones que las descubren por primera vez.
🕰 El presente
¿Qué está funcionando ahora?
¿Qué géneros están de moda? ¿Qué mecánicas o estilos están adoptando los estudios independientes?
🔮 El futuro
¿Qué tecnologías están surgiendo? ¿Qué nuevas formas de jugar se están explorando?
¿Qué edad voy a tener en cinco años y qué tipo de jugador seré?
Este enfoque me encantó porque invita a combinar pasado, presente y futuro para crear algo con más profundidad y proyección.
🧠 Final Thoughts
Before I start making a game now, I ask myself all these things — things I never even considered before.
It’s not about following a strict formula. It’s about clarity and focus.
And honestly, it helps me stay more motivated and realistic.
If you’re reading this and you tend to jump straight into Unity or Godot — I get it. Been there.
But I hope this helps you take a step back and think through your ideas with more structure.
Every great game starts with an idea…
But it becomes real through thoughtful planning. 💡
🧠 Reflexión final
Ahora, antes de empezar a hacer un juego, me hago todas estas preguntas que antes ni se me pasaban por la cabeza.
No se trata de seguir una fórmula rígida, sino de tener claridad y foco.
Y la verdad es que eso me ayuda a mantenerme motivado y avanzar con más confianza.
Si estás leyendo esto y sueles lanzarte directo al motor de juego —te entiendo, a mí también me pasaba—pero ojalá este enfoque te ayude a dar un paso atrás y pensar con más estructura antes de comenzar.
Todo gran juego empieza con una idea…
Pero se vuelve realidad gracias a una planificación bien pensada. 💡
