Woke Up to clouds yesterday and it didn't look like rain until it started to sprinkle. It then rained until about noon. The boys and I stayed inside and watched the last episode of Battlebots and then they had their lunch.
Once the rain stopped I went out and got a fire going in the pit for the day. The winds have dropped a bunch of debris from the trees and I spent a bit of time gathering it from around the yard and tossing it in the fire.
My big task was to get the first gate built. I made it 60 inches tall by 47 inches wide and managed to get the diagonal piece to fit almost perfectly. The fencing is 60 inches tall so it fit the gate perfect as well.
I tacked the fence down with staples all around then installed the hinge straps with lag bolts.
On the post without the hinges I had to take my sawzall and hack away some of the post to allow for the gate to close properly. It wasn't much but it made all the difference in the gate closing.
The bottom hinge pin bolt was not fitting right and I tried to use this thinner nut on it but when I tightened the other nut on the other side of the post it just popped the thin nut off.
The top one was fine with the regular sized nut. So I ended up going back to the regular sized nut on the bottom but I used the wrench to tighten it past the threads which gave me the space I needed.
The gate swings nicely closed and has a minimal gap on the right side of it. I will be getting a gate hasp for it next trip to North 40.
One t-post between the post and the corner and I got the fencing cut to the length of the wood post. I installed the screws with mounting rings so that I can easily remove the wired from the post in Fall to allow access into the garden with my truck and trailer.
I can pull the wire from the gate around the corner t-post and roll it up to the wood post on the south side.
The corner of the fence was the problem that had stymied me and I finally figured out that it had a take up. When changing from a downhill slope to a cross slope there is a take up that has to be accounted for on the top of the fence. The bottom doesn't need it but the top has to be folded over itself to account for the change in angle. I ended up scrunching the fence together and overlapping it some, using my big channel locks it made it fairly easy. It still is not fully straight but it is far better than it was.
I was trying to figure out where to place the post by the tool shed and decided to space it away from the shed a bit. It made it much easier to dig the hole which went into largely sand. I used a bunch of rocks and pounded them as hard as I could into the sand to lock the post into place.
I fastened a short piece of fence to the corner of the shed then to the post. It was only about 16 inches wide but fully closes off the gap.
I moved the barbed wire to the footing next to the garden to open up the space by the gate opening. I will have another 4 foot wide gate here that I will build just like the other. I will have 1 more gate to build on the other side of the tool shed which will largely enclose the garden. There is fence near the studio that I need to decide on which will completely enclose the garden areas.
It had gotten late and we needed to eat soon so the boys could try to get to bed for their wrestling tournament today. I made up burger patties and got them on the grill. I made some long patties for the boys to put on hotdog buns for their lunch at the tournament.
While I showered the boys got to play on digital a little bit then with them to bed we went out to soak and my muscles were rather happy with the time.
Early morning for all of us today for the last wrestling tournament which will end up being a long day.
