Hola a toda la comunidad de ecoTrain, ¿cómo están? Para mí es un placer estar aquí en una segunda oportunidad para participar en la dinámica de @ecotrain sobre la pregunta de la semana, ya que disfruté mucho compartiendo con ustedes la vez anterior. Ahora, esta semana se trata de hablar un poco de la comunicación.
Hello to all the ecoTrain community, how are you? For me it is a pleasure to be here in a second opportunity to participate in the dynamic of @ecotrain about the question of the week, as I enjoyed sharing with you last time. Now, this week it's about talking a little bit about communication.
La comunicación en mi opinión es una de las necesidades más importantes de los seres humanos puesto que vivimos en sociedad, día tras día nos relacionamos entre nosotros y estamos constantemente expuestos un gran número de sentimientos que pueden llegar a incluso sobrecogernos, ya que dentro de la comunicación existe cierta transmisión de las emociones dependiendo del tema sobre el cual se esté hablando y el cómo se hace, algo que puede llegar a afectar nuestras relaciones interpersonales… como ha sido mi caso en múltiples ocasiones.
Communication in my opinion is one of the most important needs of human beings since we live in society, day after day we relate to each other and we are constantly exposed to a large number of feelings that can even overwhelm us, since within the communication there is a certain transmission of emotions depending on the topic about which we are talking and how it is done, something that can affect our interpersonal relationships... as has been my case on multiple occasions.
Creo que no es arriesgado decir que una gran cantidad de personas hemos tenido ciertos conflictos a la hora de comunicarnos con los demás, por diferentes razones. En mi caso, he llegado a cuestionarme demasiadas veces para mi gusto la manera en la que me llego a relacionar con los demás, eso me ha ocasionado un sinfín de inseguridades en cuanto a la interacción, dificultándoseme encontrar un punto medio en donde me sienta cómoda. Esto se debe a que no lidio muy bien con el conflicto, algo en lo que he trabajado mucho desde hace varios años, por lo que cuando se presentan choques de personalidades y opiniones tiendo a pasar un mal rato, quizá gran parte de la culpa se la podría atribuir a mi ansiedad.
I think it is safe to say that many of us have had certain conflicts when communicating with others, for different reasons. In my case, I have come to question too many times for my taste the way in which I get to relate to others, that has caused me endless insecurities in terms of interaction, making it difficult for me to find a middle ground where I feel comfortable. This is because I do not deal very well with conflict, something I have been working on for several years, so when personalities and opinions clash I tend to have a hard time, perhaps much of the blame could be attributed to my anxiety.
Para evadir ese tipo de conflictos, terminé adoptando una actitud complaciente que me llevó a cambiar la manera en la que me relacionaba con los demás, y en definitiva, cómo me comunicaba con otros, así que por mucho tiempo puse mis sentimientos, opiniones y necesidades en un segundo plano, para poner a los demás primero. Sin embargo, gracias a la terapia, pude cambiar significativamente, mejorando mis relaciones interpersonales, además de mi relación conmigo misma, demostrándome entonces la importancia de esa comunicación a la que muchas veces no le prestamos atención en nuestra vida, pero que independientemente nos afecta.
To avoid that kind of conflicts, I ended up adopting a complacent attitude that led me to change the way I related to others, and ultimately, how I communicated with others, so for a long time I put my feelings, opinions and needs in the background, to put others first. However, thanks to therapy, I was able to change significantly, improving my interpersonal relationships, as well as my relationship with myself, showing me then the importance of that communication that many times we do not pay attention to in our lives, but that independently affects us.
Todos tenemos nuestra forma característica de expresarnos, pese a que encontremos una serie de similitudes entre los unos y los otros, pero en mi opinión, hay ciertos elementos que deberían tenerse presentes para una óptima comunicación en donde se logre llegar a un entendimiento, puesto que si las personas no se logran dar a entender entre ellas está perdiéndose la esencia de la comunicación. Para mi desgracia tardé un largo tiempo para comprender que, gran parte de las personas por las cuales me sentí insegura a la hora de interactuar con los demás, no respetaban estos puntos y por eso era que se generaban los inconvenientes en la comunicación. Lo importancia de destacar esto entonces, es que el tener en cuenta estos elementos nos permite no solamente tomar consciencia de cuándo somos nosotros quienes no estamos comunicándonos bien para corregirnos sino también de cuándo la otra persona no se está comunicando apropiadamente. Por lo menos desde mi experiencia personal, ayuda mucho saber que el problema no eres tú sino el otro.
We all have our own characteristic way of expressing ourselves, even though we find a series of similarities between one and the other, but in my opinion, there are certain elements that should be taken into account for an optimal communication where we can reach an understanding, because if people are not able to make themselves understood among them, the essence of communication is being lost. Unfortunately for me it took me a long time to understand that most of the people I felt insecure when interacting with others, did not respect these points and that is why the communication problems were generated. The importance of highlighting this then, is that taking into account these elements allows us not only to become aware of when we are the ones who are not communicating well to correct ourselves but also when the other person is not communicating properly. At least from my personal experience, it helps a lot to know that the problem is not you but the other person.
Escuchar – Listen
Es difícil —por no decir imposible— comunicarse con alguien si no se está dispuesto a escuchar a la otra persona, y esa es una situación usual en nuestro día a día. Puede darse de varias maneras, como cuando estás intentando expresar algo pero te interrumpen una vez tras otra sin permitirte hablar, por eso a estas personas les llamo ‘monologuista’ en vista de que más que estar teniendo una conversación pareciera que estás escuchando un monólogo de su parte. También puede suceder que el otro te deje hablar, pero para sus oídos lo que dices es equiparable al zumbido de una mosca porque en realidad no te está prestando la mínima atención, ¿a quién no le ha pasado?
It is difficult -not to say impossible- to communicate with someone if you are not willing to listen to the other person, and that is a common situation in our day to day life. It can happen in several ways, such as when you are trying to express something but they interrupt you time after time without allowing you to speak, that's why I call these people 'monologuists' because rather than having a conversation it seems that you are listening to a monologue on their part. It can also happen that the other person lets you talk, but to their ears what you say is comparable to the buzzing of a fly because they are not really paying the slightest attention to you, who hasn't been there?
Además de que escuchar es parte de la cortesía que todos deberíamos demostrar, ayuda en gran medida en que no se generen malos entendidos por entender una cosa distinta a lo que la persona con quien estamos hablando está intentando decir.
In addition to the fact that listening is part of the courtesy we should all demonstrate, it helps greatly in preventing misunderstandings by understanding something other than what the person we are talking to is trying to say.
Tener empatía – Have empathy
No todo se trata sobre nosotros, hay que tener también en cuenta las circunstancias y sentimientos de la otra persona, ponerse un poco en sus zapatos para así entender por completo qué es lo que verdaderamente nos está transmitiendo y por qué. Como alguien que ha conversado con gente que no ha realizado ningún intento por entenderme sin juzgarme, puedo decir que es un sentimiento horrible. Pero, también como alguien que ha antepuesto los sentimientos y necesidades de otros por encima de los suyos propios, debo decir que hay que tener cuidado con la empatía, porque hay personas dispuestas a aprovecharse, así que es necesario encontrar cierto balance.
It's not all about us, you also have to take into account the other person's circumstances and feelings, put yourself in their shoes a little bit to fully understand what they are truly conveying and why. As someone who has conversed with people who have made no attempt to understand me without judging me, I can say that it is a horrible feeling. But, also as someone who has put the feelings and needs of others before my own, I have to say that you have to be careful with empathy, because there are people who are willing to take advantage, so you need to find some balance.
Respetar al otro – Respecting the other
El respeto es una de las bases fundamentales no sólo de la comunicación sino de la vida misma, pues si no respetas a los demás a tu alrededor podría decirse sin miedo que todas las interacciones que tengas serán negativas. Hay que tener en cuenta que por eso de que todos somos diferentes en alguna manera, nuestros pensamientos no compaginarán en la mayoría de los casos en muchos temas con quienes nos estamos comunicando, pero eso no tiene por qué ser una razón para irrespetarnos entre nosotros, y está bien que no estar de acuerdo con alguien así como que alguien no esté de acuerdo con nosotros, porque la diversidad es parte de la magia de los seres humanos. Dicho sea de paso, ¿quién querría hablar con alguien que no sabe cómo respetar cuando no compartes su opinión?
Respect is one of the fundamental bases not only of communication but of life itself, because if you do not respect others around you it could be said without fear that all the interactions you have will be negative. Keep in mind that because we are all different in some way, our thoughts will not match in most cases on many issues with those we are communicating with, but that does not have to be a reason to disrespect each other, and it is okay to disagree with someone as well as someone not agreeing with us, because diversity is part of the magic of human beings. Incidentally, who would want to talk to someone who doesn't know how to respect when you don't share their opinion?
No puedo decir que soy la mejor en esto de la comunicación, pero la seguridad que he ganado en mis relaciones interpersonales me permite saber que desde el punto donde estaba hace algunos años a donde estoy ahora hay un trecho largo, y lo importante no es ser perfectos —porque al ser seres humanos no conseguiremos jamás la perfección— sino intentar mejorar todos los días un poco más en cómo nos comunicamos, sea de la forma que sea, y que así como nosotros nos ponemos en la ardua tarea de ser un poco mejores con el paso del tiempo, no debemos de conformarnos con rodearnos de aquellos que no quieren hacer siquiera el intento.
I can't say that I am the best at communication, but the confidence I have gained in my interpersonal relationships allows me to know that from where I was a few years ago to where I am now is a long way, and the important thing is not to be perfect -because being human beings we will never achieve perfection- but to try to improve every day a little more in how we communicate, in whatever way we communicate, and that just as we set ourselves the arduous task of becoming a little better with the passing of time, we should not be satisfied with surrounding ourselves with those who do not even want to make the attempt.
