Many times I see a lot of people complain about the policies of their government (I'm also included in that list) and you can't blame them because almost everywhere the policies never favor the common citizen. But problems differ from place to place, so the complains of the citizens of one nation will most of the time be different from that of another.
I see a lot of people talk about how so so and so policies could have been better and it got me thinking back when I was in high school where we did the one day principal thing where a student was allowed to be principal for a day (although still under the supervision of the real principal) and although I wasn't chosen, a friend of mine was and I could see it was so much fun for him.
This got me thinking if we could apply the same thing on a national stage or probably the States, although I would prefer the national stage because it covers all the areas of the country. So if you were allowed to be the president of your country for just a day, what would you change?
This question itself has some problems because it can be argued whether you can actually make any meaningful change in just a day. I say, it depends on what type of problem you're looking to tackle. My country is a beautiful place and I wouldn't trade it for somewhere else but it doesn't remove the fact that we have a lot of challenges in our continent compared to other continents. The first things I would want to look at is access to stable security, feeding , healthcare, good roads and electricity but solving all of this is not possible in a day so if I had to pick one to solve it would be food.
I think it would surprise a lot of people that most of the security issues we have is usually linked to hunger and poverty. A lot of people are living below a dollar everyday and as humans we all have different limits for tolerating certain things. This matter is not even helped by the brazen attitude to which public officials loot the nations funds (recently a public official was accused of looting a whooping 80 billion naira), what do you think such news would do to the average citizen just struggling to survive through legal means.
So the thing I would look into is how to improve the country food production and how more food can also reduce prices. Its not enough to have enough food, but what are people paying for it. Its saddening that salaries have not increased in any meaningful way but food prices in some cases have almost doubled when we look at prices from around 10-15 years ago.
If I were President for a day (which isn't enough to actually do much) I would look at how to improve our food supply and the pricing. This I believe would greatly reduce the percentage of crime we have, and hence improve security.
