Today I want to talk about CASSAVA, How My Mother Taught Me The Importance, Usefulness and The Benefit of Cassava,she taught me on how to plant it and also nurture it. Cassava is a cash crop that put food on your table.
What is the meaning of Cassava? Cassava is a rooted food that comes out from the cassava stem.
It can be planted on mounds or ridges, and heaps.
The parts of cassava are the stem,root that is the cassava and the leave.
The Usefulness of Cassava are:
- Cassava is used for making GARRI (eba).
- Cassava is used for making (fufu)or akpu.
- Cassava is used for making tapioca.
- It is also used for making starchy.
- Cassava is used for making money.
The procedure on how to plant Cassava
That is the way my sweet mother taught me:
- First clear your farm with knife allow the grass to dry, set it on fire, used your rake and rake the farm,is now ready.
- Secondly bring your hoe or shovel to make a heap of soil or ridges, after that cut your cassava stem into 30cm, the cuttings are planted at distance of 90x120cm at one cutting per stand.
- About, 9,260 cuttings will be required to plant one hectare
put the stem inside the heap you made set it square and cover it with soil, within one week it will shoot out. It is planted on the loamy soil. - Allow it to grow up before weeding the grass out with your hoe, knife etc.
A cassava crop grown for starch can be harvested between 12month, 18-24months after planting. During harvesting, care should be taken to avoid damaging the tubers. Harvested cassava tubers spoil quickly in storage, cassava should therefore be preferable Left in the ground in the farm and harvested periodically as needed.
Cassava is processed Into : GARRI (Cassava flour). This is how to make GARRI from cassava:
Harvest the cassava, pill the back out, wash it, bring sack bag not waterproof bag wash the bag, put the cassava inside carry it to engine that grind cassava, package it inside the bag and press out the water or use big stone.
After that use sieve to removed the chaf, now set your fire bring fry pan and place iton fire allow it to dry, put the dry cassava inside it and start frying it by turning it on till the hold water dry off you will see the GARRI inside. It is good to chew, drink or eba by boiling hot water, eat it okro, egusi, vegetable soup etc very sweet I love it.
How To Make Tapioca
- Heavest cassava cut and wash it , pill the back out boil the cassava about 30-40minutes bring it down allow it to cool, bring kitchen knife start to slice it smaller particles, after you have finished sock it over night the water will drown in the morning wash it well well before eating it, it give you energy to work very well and it will cool your body, you can use coconut, grandnut or kernel to eat it that is all I have to say now try it and you will enjoy it.
