Nature will be nature.
When I was a kid, the policies were a bit different, maybe too lax.
Since technology and modern communication weren't too prevalent like today, the latest news can be only heard from radio and televisions. I also see my father is a bit fond of the daily newspaper too. But news can come late at times, or even not at all. Everyone just looks at the window and decide for themselves.
As usual,l before, breaking news announces the Signal Number of the storm:
- Signal Number 1 - the elementary schools will be closed for the day or until further notice.
- Signal Number 2 - all high school classes are postponed.
- Signal Number 3 it is previously rare, but that's the time that including college classes are postponed for the day.
Most workers still usually go to work during a Signal Number 3 storm, but further announcements can be made if the storm intensifies. This was the normal pre-2013, but not anymore after the Super Typhoon 'Haiyan' Yolanda.
News dissemination can be problemative before especially to far-flung areas, but right now, news, music, and everything is on our smartphones.
Also, right now, weather alerts buzz can your phone even during wee hours, given that it is urgent and important. And for more than two weeks, my phone has been giving off alarms at least once a day, sometimes three times a day. As usual, we are reminded that heavy rains lead ro landslides and flash floods in high risk areas.
Nature Finds Its Way
Even if I thought it was just normal, the weather was undeniably bad in the previous days.
Still, vsiting the orchard was not a struggle at all, even with the heavy rains, very cold weather, and the muddy paths. Nature does its thing, so people must live with it.
The truth is that climate, weather, and life is just a cycle. On extremes, everyone might just die off and the universe still continue to do its thing. What we must do is make an ideal place to live without being greedy with Earth's resources. Thrive along with nature and plant a tree when you can.
There were signs of mild flooding at the property, though it had already receded. It happens when there's too much rain and the river overflows, lucmily this time, it wasn't that bad like the previous events.
I could sulk and give up, but I can also choose to be mesmerized by how nature works. Before, I fear about erosion, but with it, it just re-shapes the Earth. It moves soil from one place to another and even make temporary rivulets. Flood also carries life with it, bringing seeds to grow into new places
The only thing that humans should do is plant trees, because it severe erosions that destructively deforms where flood flows. When there's multiple trees or plants with deep roots, it can decelerate water flow and collect more sediments and other unexpected plant materials.
Plant trees, plant more trees.
In actuality, there's not much damage from the flood, but because of the seeds sprouting everywhere, weeds seem to have find a new home in the orchard, including the permaculture garden. While it's a non-issue, I should be doing manual weeding again until the dry season comes.
Behind the mess of weeds, the crops I was growing over the past months are still alive, luckily. I'm still amazed how the view shapeshifts in every season. One day it looks like this, the next time it looks like that. Growing a food forest is interesting, because nature knows you're helping it heal.
Before, whenever it floods, it destroys everything in its path, but right now, the food forest still thrives.
