This is a post to go with #EcencyDiscord challenge. This week's prompt 'Eco-friendly' made me scratch my head for a while... how should I interpret it?
Ecology is an abstract idea, something to do with faith (and marketing as well, hehe); designers all over the world have scratched their heads a lot, inventing matching visuals to illustrate this idea. Ecology is natural, green, floral? growing; therefore ideas of a house surrounded by lush greenery or a newborn sprout stretching its weak stem towards the sun from a heap of garbage are exploited very heavily and successfully ... and turned into a cliché.

A beautiful click-bait picture, of course, will sell the product better (in my case - a post), and for a while I considered if I should create a similar eco-beauty visual in Photoshop. (Lets be honest: its impossible to photograph such a construct as they do not exist in real world). I could do it, although it would take a significant amount of time and I probably would miss the weekly deadline.
A rare vehicle I stumbled on the streets of St.Petersburg in May, 2021. Judging by the degree of greenery and flourishing, this might be a super-eco-friendly one! Pretty sadly that its maximum velocity is about 0 km per hour... Would be hard to use for practical purposes, lol.
So... after some consideration I decided to answer some questions given and share my personal experience; I selected some visuals from my archive to illustrate the post... but non-staged reality is not so beautiful 😂 especially when we talk about the garbage.
Yes, the topic of garbage does matter to me. Someone else's garbage intrigues and attracts me, I am quite reluctant to part with my own garbage, old things and papers (i.e. what stuff should be regarded as "garbage" and go to the bin), I prefer to use the old things rather than obtain and consume new ones non-stop (besides, my everlasting principle is: "Now they do not make them the same as before"). I like to give things a new life and increase their efficiency; I prefer to buy stuff, especially clothes and gadgets, photo lens - at second-hand stores or flea markets, and do not throw them away, but use even if they are "obsolete". (For example, my iPhone model is #4, and I'm not going to throw it away replacing with #14). All this is my conscious position in the consumer society.

Paper bags are preferrable to plastic ones. In our household we use paper bags when possible, and instead of disposable plastic bags we have these reusable cloth shopping bags - one may consider it is a collection! 😎 When folded, it takes up minimal space in my backpack, I never think about it on purpose, and when I suddenly find myself in a situation where I bought something and need to carry it home, I do not have to buy (or take for free) an additional plastic bag. Profit!
Вместо одноразовых пластиковых пакетов, мы используем для шоппинга тканевые сумки. В свернутом состоянии у меня в рюкзаке всегда лежит одна (занимает минимум места и весит всего ничего), и когда я внезапно что-то купил и нужно нести это домой - никогда не приходится брать в магазине пластиковый пакет. С годами, накапливается существеный профит для экологии!
Over the years, we accumulated an impressive collection; they are almost like a dress, for different mood and style (that is my wife to blame, hehe :) BAGGU and LOQI brand's bags are so artsy looking that my wife willingly bought them in bulk, and we gave them away to all our friends, setting an example of healthier ecology.
С годами у нас образовалась целая коллекция - они почти как платья, для разного настроения и стиля (это конечно заслуга жены :) Сумки брендов BAGGU и LOQI такие красивые, что жена охотно закупала их оптом, и мы раздаривали их всем своим знакомым, подавая пример хорошей, здоровой экологии.

Of course, we are not alone... I see such simple, reusable bags on the streets very often. Less plastic but more paper, cardboard, fabric is good for our environment. If all the folks on Earth understand and take into everyday habits, our world will become a cleaner and more pleasant environment. But it is important that people all over the world do it, not just in Europe. And here we come to the damned question: who will pay for this?
Конечно, мы не одиноки... я вижу на улицах подобные простые, многоразовые сумки очень часто. Меньше пластика, больше бумаги и ткани - хорошо для нашего окружения. Если все люди это поймут и станут применять, наш мир станет чище и красивее. Но важно, чтобы это делали люди во всем мире, не только в Европе. И тут мы переходим к проклятому вопросу: а кто за это будет платить?
The fact is that for a better ecology you have to pay - pay with your time, efforts, energy, and of course with your money.
Дело в том, что за лучшую экологию приходится платить - временем, усилиями, и деньгами конечно.
coffee cups, any way you go
For some reason, many people feel more comfortable throwing a coffee cup at their feet rather than taking ten steps to the nearest trash bin.
Почему-то многим удобнее выкинуть кофейный стаканчик себе под ноги, чем встать с жопы и сделать 10 шагов до ближайшей урны.
Paper cup will not dispose itself - it will remain lying where it was dropped.
It is much easier to pay for a disposable cup every time than to carry around a reusable one (or a water bottle...). By the way, we almost never buy water in plastic bottles (fortunately, water is not a rare treasure where we live) - me, my wife, and most importantly our daughter, we always borrow water with us from home - we keep to reuse cute little bottles (both plastic and metal).
Hамного легче каждый раз платить за одноразовый стаканчик, нежели носить с собой многоразовый (или например, бутылку для воды...). Кстати, мы не покупаем воду в пластиковых бутылках (в моей стране вода не дефицит) - мы всегда берем воду из дома, для этого у нас есть симпатичные бутылочки (и пластиковые, и металлические).

A unique non-staged frame that I captured exploring the life of St.Petersburg's courtyards. An amazing example of recycling! Local resident uses a large plastic bottle (already used) to collect free rainwater floating from the house roof. Water is precious! It is life. You can't see it without magnification, but he had such a satisfied and happy smile on his face, ummm!!! And I am out of words to tell how pleased I was, that managed to catch such a shot.
Уникальный непостановочный кадр, который я захватил во время прогулок по дворам Санкт-Петербурга. Изумительный пример утилизации! Местный житель использует большую пластиковую бутылку (уже использованную) чтобы набрать дождевой воды, текущей с крыши дома. Без увеличения не видно, но на его лице была очень довольная улыбка. А уж как доволен был я, что ухитрился поймать такой кадр!

100% avoiding plastic altogether nowadays is near impossible... but it is possible to minimize the harm. We all need to develop the habit of recycling, first of all, I mean the separation of your waste into different types: organic, paper, plastic, glass, metal, batteries. Only this way makes it possible to process and recycle the waste effectively. Our grannys can't be re-educated 🤓 but I'm trying to load this idea into our baby's mind. I bought her this very cool illustrated book on Recycling! Look at the cover; it is in Russian, but I am more than sure there exist EN / Spanish analogues as well.
Совсем избежать употребления пластика невозможно ... но можно минимизировать вред. Все мы должны развить привычку к утилизации мусора, в первую очередь я имею в виду разделение мусорных отходов на разные виды мусора: органика, бумага, пластик, стекло, металл, батарейки. Только такое разделение делает возможным эффективную переработку мусора и его ресайклинг. Наших дедушек-бабушек уже не перевоспитать 🤓 но я стараюсь загрузить эту идею в разум нашей детки. Я даже купил ей иллюстрированную книгу о Переработке мусора!
Daily consumption creates mountains of garbage. Some is obvious and pretty visible in my kitchen, some is less obvious. I don’t want to brag, but while buying food I always think in advance about its package and possible recycling, and try to minimize it. (Said textile bags, and more).
Ежедневное потребление создает груды мусора; некоторые очевидны и копятся прямо на моей кухне, некоторые менее заметны. Не хочу хвастаться, но покупая еду, я заранее думаю об упаковочном мусоре и возможном ресайклинге, и стараюсь минимизировать его.

For example, I buy milk only in plastic bottles, and never in laminated cardboard bags. Laminate is evil! its impossible to recycle. Paper coffee cups are not actually paper, not at all; they are "sandwiches" reinforced with plastic laminate - thus they cannot be disposed of, but only thrown away. Our local dump has a huge container for plastic bottles, and I regularly do my bit ... and sigh, imagining how many such containers are in my city and how much plastic they accumulate every day ... year.
As for the glass... sadly, we dont have special containers for glass waste, otherwise I would be doing for it the same efforts as well.
Например, молоко я покупаю в пластиковых бутылках, и никогда в ламинированных картонных пакетах. Ламинат - зло! переработка невозможна по определению. Бумажные стаканчики для кофе на самом деле не бумажные, это укрепленные пластиковым ламинатом "сэндвичи" - утилизировать нельзя, можно только выкинуть. Местная помойка имеет огромный контейнер для пластиковых бутылок, я регулярно приношу свою лепту... и вздыхаю, представляя сколько всего таких контейнеров в моем городе и сколько пластика они накапливают каждый день... год...

My humble guess is that in the business wasted paper utilization business probably I am the Hive champion. See, for several years I worked at a printing house, and my position matched perfectly to be in charge of paper cuttings and waste. Of course, you could throw them away (and pay money for it), but I did the opposite: I carefully packed them in cardboard boxes, accumulated a large amount of paper, and then called a special service that bought this waste paper from me. Yes, yes, it was they who paid the money to me, and not vice versa! True, the price tag was stupid, but the volume that accumulated over 8-10 months, at a price of 6-8 rubles per kilogram, brought me about 5 thousand rubles.
Скромно замечу, что в бизнесе по сбору вейстид пейпер я - чемпион Улья. Точно я не знаю, но предполагаю что это так. Видите ли, я несколько лет проработал в типографии, причем находился как раз в позиции заведующего бумажными обрезками и отходами. Их можно было выкидывать (и платить за это деньги!), но я поступил наоборот: аккуратно собирал в картонные коробки, накапливал большой объем, а потом вызывал сервисменов которые у меня это выкупали. Да, да, они платили деньги мне, а не наоборот! Правда, ценник был так себе, но при цене 6-8 рублей за килограмм объем, который накапливался за 8-10 месяцев, приносил мне около 5 косых.

1st time I was selling wasted paper in May, 2019. I dont remember exact figures, but apparently it was within 800-900kg.
Pure luck that my workplace had some spare room to let me store all these boxes for such a long accumulation period of time - otherwise such a business scheme would not be possible at all. (As you can see in the photo, these boxes were enough to full-load a small car!) In total, while working at that printing house, I succeeded to perform this business scheme three times; once I invested the money received from the wasted paper sale (5000 roubles), into an excellent vintage Soviet lens: fisheye Zenitar 16mm. Double, even triple profit!
Мое счастье и удача, что на моем рабочем месте оставалось некоторое свободное пространство, чтобы хранить все эти коробки - иначе подобная операция мне бы не удалась. (Как вы можете заметить, этих коробок хватило чтобы загрузить ими небольшую машину!) Всего, пока я работал в типографии, эта бизнес-схема мне удалась три раза. Причем один раз за полученные от продажи макулатуры денежки, я смог купить отличный винтажный советский объектив - фишай Zenitar 16mm. Двойной, и даже тройной профит!
Today, my activity in this field has decreased significantly, but still - we collect paper for recycling and when the week of wasted paper is announced at my babygirl's school, we always take part. Planting on the right habits is important.
Let me dilute this documentary stuff with an artsy photo; below is a funny photo from the New Year's corporate celebration evening; all our crowd was sprinkled with a cloud of foam balls and cut paper (!) What an unusual and completely non eco-friendly use of paper. But we had so much fun! Years have passed, but I still remember our Chief words on that case - "Today is exactly that one day you dreamed of along the whole year, today you absolutely free to throw a crumpled sheet of paper at your chief with impunity!"
Разбавлю документальность; ниже развеселая фота с новогоднего корпоратива, когда вся толпа была осыпана тучей пенопластовых шариков и резаной бумаги. Необычное и совершенно не экологичное использование бумаги, но было реально круто. Сколько лет прошло, а я до сих помню слова шефа: "Сегодня тот самый день в году, о котором вы мечтали весь год - можете безнаказанно кинуть в вашего директора скомканной бумагой, и вам за это ничего не будет!"
