Do We Still Have Freedom of Speech?
I started with an easy question!
Joking aside, I'm happy to participate in this discussion.
I start with a question, albeit a rhetorical one:
The fact that I have my say here and today on this subject, is it not the testimony that yes, we still have freedom of speech?
It may seem trivial but I believe that this fact was not taken for granted 50 years ago.
The web changed everything.
Today anyone can express their opinion.
Anyone.
All you need is an internet connection and no one will be able to take away the right to tell your opinion.
Are there restrictions in some parts of the world?
Yes, there are.
Compared to 50 years ago, what is the percentage of people with these restrictions?
It seems an easy and obvious answer and yet, judging by the graph below, it is not.
There are many countries, especially in Africa and the East, that do not enjoy the same rights as we in the West.
My country, Italy, is in place number 43 for example.
And here comes the second aspect.
We should understand what we mean by Freedom of Speech.
We all, for better or worse, can express ourselves.
But how many can do it freely, without having to worry about retaliation?
Was Italy in Berlusconi's time a free country?
Absolutely it was.
There was protest, you could demonstrate in the streets, there was debate.
Yet many journalists were afraid to tell the facts, the truth of things.
Many ended up denying the evidence and telling lies in newspapers, TV and magazines.
The result?
The so-called post-truth.
Professionals we should have trusted, even very experienced and important journalists, have been telling us lies for years. Every day.
The reader, the citizen often ended up believing it.
Has freedom of speech been respected in Italy?
Yes.
But Berlusconi, thanks to his power and wealth (he owns 3 TV channels, numerous newspapers, he is a film and literary publisher, he owns a football team like Milan and so on), has totally influenced the opinion of the public, the reader, the citizen.
At even higher and worrying levels is what has been happening with the so-called sovereigns for some years now.
Matteo Salvini in Italy.
Orban in Hungary.
Trump in America.
Bolsonaro in Brazil.
Johnson in the UK.
Are these countries free?
Formally, yes.
But what happens when the majority party, the most acclaimed leader is nothing more than a producer of fake news.
The propaganda of Salvini, Orban, Bolsonaro and especially Trump is dangerous, perhaps more dangerous than you would find in a totalitarian regime.
It is propaganda that hides behind democracy and freedom, but in fact the threat.
They are saboteurs who bombard on TV, social networks and the web, the citizen with invented news and narratives out of context, out of the world.
Social networks unfortunately play a decisive role in this unfortunate situation.
Often, in fact, they are the preferred propaganda tool of these characters.
How to fight then?
Maybe, as covid-19 taught us, the only way we have is to go back to "being human".
What does that mean?
It means going back to filling the squares, the bars, the agoras of the world, be they physical or virtual.
You have to avoid hiding behind an avatar and a keyboard.
Above all, you have to take sides.
Fight for new forms of aggregation.
Save the poorest countries.
Change the way of thinking.
Fight for a reduction in working hours.
Live to be better and not to be fake free slaves.
Only then could we say that yes, we still have freedom of Speech.

Son partito con una domanda facile facile!
A parte gli scherzi, partecipo volentieri a questa discussione.
Parto con una domanda, seppur retorica:
Il fatto che io possa dire la mia qui ed oggi su questo tema, non è la testimonianza che si, we still have freedom of speech?
Può sembrare una banalità ma credo che questo fatto non fosse scontato 50 anni fa.
Il web ha cambiato tutto.
Oggi chiunque può esprimere la propria opinione.
Chiunque.
Basta una connessione internet e nessuno potrà togliervi il diritto di raccontare il vostro pensiero.
In alcune parti del mondo ci sono restrizioni?
Si.
Rispetto a 50 anni fa quale è la percentuale di persone con queste restrizioni?
Sembra una risposta facile e scontata eppure, a giudicare dal grafico sottostante, non lo è.
Sono tanti i paesi, soprattutto in Africa e in Oriente, a non godere degli stessi diritti di cui noi occidentali godiamo.
Il mio paese, l'Italia, è al posto numero 43 ad esempio.
E qui arriva il secondo aspetto.
Dovremmo capire cosa intendiamo per Freedom of Speech.
Tutti, bene o male, riusciamo ad esprimerci.
Ma quanti possono farlo liberamente, senza doversi preoccupare di eventuali ritorsioni?
L'Italia ai tempi di Berlusconi era un paese libero?
Assolutamente si.
C'era protesta, si poteva manifestare in piazza, si creava dibattito.
Eppure molti giornalisti avevano paura di raccontare i fatti, la verità delle cose.
Molti, finivano per negare le evidenze e dire bugie su giornali, tv e riviste.
Il risultato?
La cosiddetta post-verità.
Professionisti di cui ci saremmo dovuti fidare, anche giornalisti molto esperti ed importanti, ci hanno raccontato per anni bugie. Ogni giorno.
Il lettore, il cittadino ha spesso finito per crederci.
In Italia è stata dunque rispettata la libertà di parola?
Si.
Ma Berlusconi, grazie al suo potere e alla sua ricchezza (possiede 3 Canali TV, numerosi quotidiani, è un editore sia cinematografico che letterario, possiede una squadra di calcio come il Milan and so on), ha influenzato totalmente l'opinione del pubblico, del lettore, del cittadino.
A livelli ancora più alti e preoccupanti è quello che da qualche anno sta accadendo con i cosiddetti sovranisti.

Sono questi paesi liberi?
Formalmente si.
Ma cosa accade quando il partito maggioritario, il leader più acclamato non è altro che un produttore di fake news.
La propaganda di Salvini, Orban, Bolsonaro e soprattutto Trump è pericolosa, forse più pericolosa di quelle che trovereste in un regime totalitario.
E' una propaganda che si nasconde dietro la democrazia e la libertà, ma di fatto la minaccia.
Sono dei sabotatori che bombardano su tv, social network e web, il cittadino con notizie inventate e narrazioni fuori contesto, fuori dal mondo.
I social network purtroppo giocano un ruolo determinante in questa spiacevole situazione.
Spesso, infatti, sono lo strumento di propaganda preferito da questi personaggi.
Come combattere allora?
Forse, come il covid-19 ci ha insegnato, l'unico modo che abbiamo è tornare ad "essere umani".
Cosa vuol dire?
Vuol dire tornare a riempire le piazze, i bar, le agorà del mondo, siano esse fisiche o virtuali.
Bisogna evitare di nascondersi dietro un avatar e una tastiera.
Soprattutto bisogna schierarsi.
Lottare per nuove forme di aggregazione.
Salvare i paesi più poveri.
Cambiare il modo di pensare.
Combattere per una riduzione dell'orario di lavoro.
Vivere per essere migliori e non per essere schiavi fintamente liberi.
Solo allora potremmo affermare che si, we still have freedom of Speech.
