Hello everyone and welcome to my blog at this hour. Thank God it's Friday. Littering has posed a lot of serious challenges for so many countries across the world for decades. Well, sit back, relax and enjoy all that I have packaged for your reading pleasure.
Littering has contributed to all sorts of pollution such as air pollution, land pollution and water pollution. A major cause of these pollutions in the world is the constant use, littering and burning of plastic bags, which are popularly referred to as nylons or leather in some parts of Nigeria.
Plastic bags are almost a necessity as it is needed in on way or the other every day. They are used for packaging and transporting goods such as foods, clothes, shoes, books, groceries, and so on. There is no store you purchase an item from in Nigeria that would not possibly package it for you in a plastic or nylon bag. Also, another common use of plastic bags is for packaging water - sachet water is affordable (well, not anymore) and it's highly consumed on a daily basis. Plastic/nylon bags have proven to be a necessity in our world today, however, they contribute to the deterioration of our lands, all forms of pollution and the death of so many animals, especially the aquatic animals.
Research have proven that it takes over five hundred years (500) for one - (1) plastic bag to degrade. Isn't that a long time, considering millions and millions of plastic bags that are used daily all over the world. These bags release toxic chemicals into the soil which affects the productivity of the soil. It also results to the death of so many animals on land and in the water.
The littering of plastic bags on our streets and dumping in our rivers are causing lot of problems for us as a country. So many see the opportunity to dispose off their waste when it's raining by throwing the waste bag into the drainage so that the water will carry it away and probably dump it into the nearest river or another man's frontage. Pathetic!
The use of plastic bags/nylons cause a lot of harm to you and I, and the world in general. The chemicals that are released from these plastic bags or nylons while they are being burnt is injurious to our health when they are inhaled. Also, medical experts have said that eating or heating a meal in plastic/nylon bags can cause some diseases to the body because some of the chemicals that was used to produce the nylon would have mixed with the food.

There have been several unsuccessful moves to ban plastic/nylon bags in Nigeria in a bid to curb all the damages it causes to the environment. The question is what will be the alternative if it is banned?
- Paper bags
- Cloth bags
Land pollution and other forms of environmental damages caused by plastic bags can be reduced to a minimal level if the following are adopted.
- Make use of reusable bottles instead of buying plastic water every time.
- Use a fabric bag to take your clothes to the dry cleaner and to also bring them back home instead of pilling up plastic bags in your house that will later be dumped or burnt.
source - Use your fabrics bag for shopping
- Educate people about the effects of plastic/nylon bags on our environment.
- Volunteer to join a group that clean up the environment regularly.
