The anime I'm talking about today is called The Apothecary Diaries. It's a Japanese historical mystery anime released in 2023. The anime was directed by Norihiro Naganuma, who wonderfully portrayed every scene of the story. I personally enjoyed the anime a lot. It's perfect for those who like intelligent and mysterious stories.

The setting of The Apothecary Diaries is in an ancient empire such as medieval China. And the protagonist of the story is the young apothecary Maomao. Ever since childhood she spent her time in a brothel. She is kidnapped one day, and taken to the palace of the emperor without any specific reasons. When Maomao arrives in the palace, she becomes a food tester, whose task is to test the food to be able to tell whether it is untoxic or not, as well as solve different mysteries of what goes on in the palace.

Jinshi is a powerful man in the palace and becomes interested in the knowledge and skills of Maomao. Jinshi is a sly and discreet individual who takes part in politics and other conspiracy schemes of the dynasty. Little by little, friendship and trust grow between Maomao and Jinshi who then use it against numerous dangers.

The interesting thing about the story is that Maomao assists in deciphering the mysteries related to poisoning, murder and conspiracy that is being committed within the palace through her sharp intelligence and knowledge in medicine. Moreover, the life at the palace, ins and outs of politics and the bond of the characters is described really fluently.

The Apothecary Diaries is a mix of mystery and medicine and at the same time the story of courage, intelligence, and humanity of Maomao. Her life and hardships create the distinctive portrait of how one could survive in such a barbaric place as the palace of the emperor.

I found The Apothecary Diaries series to be a very interesting and different story. In particular, the character of Maomao is very smart and brave, which I really liked. There is no way to not be fascinated by how she uses her knowledge and skills to make her way through the complex politics and intrigues of the ancient palace.

I enjoyed the mysterious parts of this series a lot. When Maomao finds out if the palace food is poisoned, or uncovers other hidden plots, the story has a pull that keeps me interested. The plot is so intelligent that at one point it feels like I am solving the case from there myself.

I would also like to talk about both the anime and the manga. The anime is very well made, the voice acting of the characters and the environment immersed me in the series. However, the detailed parts of the manga helped me understand the story more deeply.

Personally, I think The Apothecary Diaries is not just a mystery story, but also a story of intelligence, courage, and perseverance. You can learn a lot by watching or reading it, especially how to analyze situations and how to think to solve problems.

So, for those who love mystery, history, and intelligent characters, this is a perfect series. I was very inspired by it and I would recommend it to others.
