Today I want to have a serious chat about something that might be on the minds of many beginners in game development: what's the best engine to start creating 2D games? I'm talking about the showdown between two heavyweights that currently stand out for any beginner, namely GameMaker Studio and Godot. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I'll share my experience and opinion on why I chose GameMaker Studio as my starting point in this crazy journey of creating my own games.
Before diving into the details, let me give you a bit of my background. I've been a gaming enthusiast forever, spending a good chunk of my time just following other developers, understanding their creations, and how things are done. But where to begin? That's the question many of us ask when deciding to dive into this incredible universe of game creation. The Beginning of Everything
Well, I started my game development journey with an old notebook I had lying around, just as a way to distract myself in 2018. It wasn't exactly a performance beast, believe me, I could run some good programs on my AMd Athlon Phenom x3, but it was what I had available. And that's where GameMaker Studio came into play and not Godot, due to the minimum specifications.
GameMaker Studio: The YoYoGames trademark
Let's start by talking about the strengths of GameMaker Studio. One of the things that attracted me most to this engine was its compatibility with my old notebook. It ran smoothly like melted butter, even on my modest specifications. That was crucial for me, as I wanted to start learning game development without needing to invest in a new computer right away. Also, the learning curve of GameMaker Studio is quite smooth. I already had some programming experience, but nothing too advanced.
With GameMaker Studio, I was able to start creating interesting things from day one thanks to its user-friendly interface, and the built-in products (Demo-Tutorials) already embedded in the beginning of the tool. The scripting language is called GML (GameMaker Language), it's easy to understand, and very powerful at the same time. I felt comfortable experimenting and testing new things without feeling overwhelmed. Another strong point of Game Maker Studio is its active and friendly community. Whenever I got stuck on something, all I had to do was a quick internet search to find a ton of resources, tutorials, and forums where people were willing to help me. That made all the difference to me, especially in moments when I felt a little lost.
But, of course, not everything is rosy. GameMaker Studio also has its weaknesses. One of them is its cost. Although there is a free version, with some limitations, to access all the engine's features, you need to shell out a considerable amount. This can be a barrier for many beginners who are not willing to invest money right away. However, if you just want to learn in the engine without worrying about distributing your game in executable form, you can do that totally for free.
Another point that didn't bother me, but might be a bit annoying for those who would like, is the lack of advanced features for 3D game development. Of course, as the name suggests, GameMaker Studio's focus is on 2D games, and it excels at that. But if you have plans to create 3D games in the future, maybe it's better to look for a more suitable engine for that type of project. I'm not saying it's impossible, but you might end up working twice as hard here.
Godot: Open Source and Free
Now, let's talk a bit about Godot. I know many newer developers have a passionate love for this engine, and rightfully so, as Godot is a powerful and versatile tool, with an incredible community behind it. So, why didn't I choose Godot as my engine of choice? Well, the truth is that Godot is also an excellent option for beginners, and I have nothing against it. In fact, I played around with Godot after acquiring another more powerful notebook. But in the end, it was a matter of comfort and familiarity between compilation and development.
As I mentioned earlier, I already had some programming experience, and GameMaker Studio's scripting language, GML, when I tried to use Godot, this made GameMaker seem more intuitive and easy to learn than Godot's language, GDScript. Not that GDScript is bad, far from it. In fact, it's very powerful and flexible. But for someone who's taking their first steps in game programming, the simplicity of GML was a big draw for me. Also, Godot can be a bit more demanding in terms of hardware resources. Although it can also run on less powerful computers, you may encounter some performance issues if you're dealing with very modest specifications. As I was using an old notebook, this weighed a bit on my decision.
Personal Opinion
In the end, the choice between GameMaker Studio and Godot is a very personal matter. Both engines have a lot to offer, and the best option for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. For me, GameMaker Studio was the right choice, at least to start, as it offered me everything I needed to take the first steps in creating 2D games, and I'm very happy with my decision. If you're thinking about starting to create your own games, my advice is to try out several engines and see which one suits your work style and development goals best.
In the end, the most important thing is to have fun and learn along the way. And always remember: No matter which engine you choose, the most important thing is to get your hands dirty and start creating. I heard this from an experienced developer who creates games in the LUA language.

O inicio de tudo
Bom, eu comecei a minha jornada de desenvolvimento de jogos com um notebook antigo que eu tinha por aí, isso é, apenas como uma forma de distração em 2018. Ele não era exatamente um monstro de desempenho, acredite, eu conseguia rodar alguns programas bons em meu AMd Athlon Phenom x3, mas era o que eu tinha disponível. Vamos começar falando dos pontos fortes do GameMaker Studio. Uma das coisas que mais me atraiu nessa engine foi a sua compatibilidade com o meu notebook antigo. Ele rodava suave como manteiga derretida, mesmo nas minhas especificações modestas. Isso foi crucial para mim, já que eu queria começar a aprender a desenvolver jogos sem precisar investir em um computador novo para isso logo de cara. Além disso, a curva de aprendizado do GameMaker Studio é bem suave. Eu já tinha alguma experiência em programação, mas não era nada muito avançado.
Com o GameMaker Studio, eu consegui começar a criar coisas interessantes desde o primeiro dia graças a sua interface amigável, e os produtos (Demo-Tutoriais) já embutidos no inicio da ferramenta. A linguagem de script é chamada GML (GameMaker Language), é fácil de entender e muito poderosa ao mesmo tempo. Eu me senti confortável experimentando e testando coisas novas sem me sentir sobrecarregado. Outro ponto forte do Game Maker Studio é a sua comunidade ativa e amigável. Sempre que eu ficava preso em alguma coisa, bastava fazer uma rápida busca na internet para encontrar uma tonelada de recursos, tutoriais e fóruns onde as pessoas estavam dispostas a me ajudar. Isso fez toda a diferença para mim, especialmente nos momentos em que eu me sentia um pouco perdido.
Mas, claro, nem tudo são flores. O GameMaker Studio também tem seus pontos fracos. Um deles é o seu custo. Embora exista uma versão gratuita, com algumas limitações, para ter acesso a todas as funcionalidades da engine, você precisa desembolsar uma quantia considerável. Isso pode ser um obstáculo para muitos iniciantes que não estão dispostos a investir dinheiro logo de cara. Entretanto, se você apenas quer aprender na engine, sem se preocupar em distribuir seu jogo em forma de executável, você pode fazer isso totalmente sem custo.
Outro ponto que me não me incomodou, mas pode ser um incomodo um pouco para quem gostaria, é a falta de recursos avançados para desenvolvimento de jogos 3D. Claro, como o próprio nome sugere, o foco do GameMaker Studio é em jogos 2D, e nisso ele brilha. Mas se você tem planos de criar jogos em 3D no futuro, talvez seja melhor procurar por uma engine mais adequada para esse tipo de projeto. Não estou dizendo que não é possível, mas você pode trabalhar duas vezes mais aqui.
Godot: Código aberto e sem custo
Agora, vamos falar um pouco sobre o Godot. Eu sei que muitos desenvolvedores mais recentes têm uma paixão ardente por essa engine, e com razão, afinal o Godot é uma ferramenta poderosa e versátil, com uma comunidade incrível por trás dela. Então, por que eu não escolhi o Godot como minha engine de escolha? Bem, a verdade é que o Godot também é uma excelente opção para iniciantes, e eu não tenho nada contra ele. Na verdade, eu até brinquei um pouco com o Godot após adquirir outro Notebook mais potente. Mas no final das contas, foi uma questão de conforto e familiaridade entre compilação e desenvolvimento.
Como eu mencionei anteriormente, eu já tinha alguma experiência em programação, e a linguagem de script do GameMaker Studio, o GML, quando fui tentar o Godot, isso fez com que ao tentar utilizar Godot, o GameMaker me pareceu mais intuitiva e fácil de aprender do que a linguagem do Godot, o GDScript. Não que o GDScript seja ruim, de forma alguma. Na verdade, ele é muito poderoso e flexível. Mas para alguém que está dando os primeiros passos na programação de jogos, a simplicidade do GML foi um grande atrativo para mim. Além disso, o Godot pode ser um pouco mais exigente em termos de recursos de hardware. Embora ele também possa rodar em computadores menos potentes, pode ser que você encontre alguns problemas de desempenho se estiver lidando com especificações muito modestas. Como eu estava usando um notebook antigo, isso pesou um pouco na minha decisão.
Opinião pessoal
No final das contas, a escolha entre GameMaker Studio e Godot é uma questão bastante pessoal. Ambas as engines têm muito a oferecer, e a melhor opção para você vai depender das suas necessidades e preferências individuais. Para mim, o GameMaker Studio foi a escolha certa, pelo menos para começar já que ele me ofereceu tudo o que eu precisava para dar os primeiros passos na criação de jogos 2D, e estou muito feliz com a minha decisão. Se você está pensando em começar a criar seus próprios jogos, minha dica é experimentar várias engines e ver qual delas se adapta melhor ao seu estilo de trabalho e às suas metas de desenvolvimento.
No final das contas, o mais importante é se divertir e aprender ao longo do caminho. E lembre-se sempre: Não importa qual engine você escolha, o mais importante é colocar a mão na massa e começar a criar. Ouvi isso de um desenvolvedor experiente que cria jogos na linguagem LUA.
