Greetings Hive community and makers, welcome to my post once again, I'm Nitsu and today apart from sharing with you a little bit of my experience printing huge parts I also want to tell you a not so nice story that happened to me with some customers.

As some of you may know I am a student of industrial design and since 3 years ago I offer 3D printing services in my faculty, last year I had the opportunity to invest again in a larger 3D printer to start taking orders with other requirements of volumes and materials. I always try to offer the best attention and service first because it is my job and second because I know that what I do has an impact on the grade and future of my client because a job poorly done or delivered out of time can make this person recurse a matter and that is something I do not want to carry in my mind.
Como algunos sabrán soy estudiante de diseño industrial y ya desde hace 3 años ofrezco servicios de impresión 3D en mi facultad, el año pasado tuve la oportunidad de invertir nuevamente en una impresora 3D más grande para empezar a tomar pedidos con otros requerimientos de volúmenes y materiales. Siempre intento ofrecer la mejor atención y servicio primero porque es mi trabajo y segundo porque se que lo que hago repercute en la nota y futuro de mi cliente ya que un trabajo mal hecho o entregado fuera de tiempo puede hacer que esta persona recurse una materia y eso es algo con lo que no quiero cargar en mi mente.

I received a job from a group of 5 or 7 people where they needed to make some huge pieces in PetG with a very good surface finish. They needed these parts to have a good mechanical and high temperature resistance since there would be an engine inside for a machine that at the moment I don't remember what its function would be. At first they gave me 3 pieces of which they asked me for 3 budgets in quality 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 before passing a price I took my time, I analyzed the pieces and saw that they had a major difficulty since they had not been designed to be 3D printed so I recommended certain modifications first for them to get what they really needed and secondly also to facilitate my work. Of those three recommendations to modify I only made one, the other two roughly told me that there were no problems, that they were going to putty among a myriad of etcetera.
Me llego un trabajo de un grupo de 5 o 7 personas donde necesitaban hacer unas piezas enormes en PetG con muy buen acabado superficial. Recitaban que están piezas tengan una buena resistencia mecánica y a altas temperaturas ya que habría un motor dentro para una maquina que en este momento no recuerdo cuál sería su función. Al principio me pasaron 3 piezas de las cuales me pidieron 3 presupuestos en calidad 0.1, 0.2 y 0.3 antes de pasar un precio me tome mi tiempo, analice las piezas y vi que tenían una dificultad importante ya que no había sido diseñadas para ser impresas en 3D así que recomendé ciertas modificaciones primero para que ellos obtengan lo que realmente necesitaban y segundo también para facilitar mi trabajo. De esas tres recomendaciones para modificar que pase solo realizaron una, las otras dos a grandes rasgos me dijeron que no había problemas, que iban a masillar entre un sinfín de etcéteras.

I coordinated with one of the members of the group the work and went to buy the necessary supplies to start.
En total habrá sido una semana en tiempo de impresión debido a que había piezas que tardaban dos o tres días en terminarse, corría el riesgo de que con corte de luz arruinara el proyecto ya que es algo muy común en verano aquí en Argentina, pero de todas formas lo tome ya que tenia una buena ganancia. Coordiné con uno de los integrantes del grupo la seña del trabajo y fui a comprar los insumos necesarios para empezar.

I finished the first piece where they accepted the modifications and I delivered it, they were very satisfied and started to work on it, with the passing of the days I finished the second piece that had many supports, due to time issues they decided to deliver it without removing the supports so I agreed and a few days later I finished the third piece and delivered it. For this last piece they had already finished paying me for the work and I was very happy and I was already thinking about what I was going to do with it. But at the least expected moment, my client spoke to me and told me that the group was not happy with the pieces I had printed and that they did not like the quality. I was always very sincere with them, I showed the progress and if there was any detail in the pieces I told them since the PetG is a material that tends to leak and leaves plastic threads that are easy to remove.
Termine la primera pieza donde aceptaron las modificaciones y la entregue, quedaron muy conformes y empezaron a trabajar sobre ella, con el paso de los días termine la segunda pieza que tenia muchos soportes, por cuestiones de tiempo decidieron que la entregara sin quitar los soportes así que accedí y unos días después termine la tercera pieza y la entregue. Ya para esta última pieza me habían terminado de abonar el trabajo y yo muy contento ya estaba pensando que iba a hacer con él. Pero en el momento menos esperado me habla mi cliente y me dice que el grupo no esta conforme con las piezas que imprimí y que no les gustaba la calidad. Yo siempre fui muy sincero con ellos, mostraba los avances y si había algún detalle en las piezas se los comentaba ya que el PetG es un material que tiene a gotear y deja hilos de plástico que son fáciles de retirar.
Clearly I was surprised and asked what was going on, the second piece that I delivered had many supports and apparently the person who received it tried to remove them and ended up breaking the piece. The first thing I said was that I had delivered it in perfect condition, I could not take care of something that had not broken even more when I said that I was in charge of removing the brackets but they did not accept it because of their work time. With the second and the last piece that I delivered they also complained but I had warned them of the complexity of that piece, I had proposed modifications and given them advice that they did not take and that resulted in a final result that did not work for them merely because of the design of their pieces.
Claramente me quede sorprendido y pregunte que ocurría, cuestión que la segunda pieza que entregue que tenía muchos soportes al parecer la persona que lo recibió intento retirarlos y termino por romper la pieza. Lo primero que die es que yo lo había entregado en perfecto estado, que no podía hacerme cargo de algo que no había roto más aun cuando dije que me encargaba de retirar los soporte pero no lo aceptaron por un tema de tiempos de trabajos de ellos. Con la segunda y la ultima pieza que entregue también se quejaron pero yo les había avisado de la complejidad de esa pieza, les había propuesto modificaciones y dado consejos que no tomaron y eso de volcó en un resultado final que a ellos n o les servía meramente por el diseño de sus piezas.

Anyway, I put aside the work and put myself in their shoes as if I were a member of the group and before recriminating and blaming, I proposed solutions. I offered to reprint the parts they needed, but making the necessary changes, I offered to give them a full refund as long as they gave me back the parts and I also told them that we could look at the costs again to give them part of the money back. Clearly it was not my obligation to offer any of these options, but I preferred to look good with them before they started talking bad about my venture. A while passed and the bad taste in my mouth for what had happened did not let me focus on other matters, in the end they gave up and said that we leave everything as it was.
De todas formas, deje del lado el trabajo y me puse en los zapatos como si yo fuera un integrante mas del grupo y antes de estar recriminando y echando culpas propuse soluciones. Les ofrecí volver a imprimir las piezas que necesitaban, pero realizando los cambios pertinentes, les ofrecí devolverles la totalidad del dinero mientras ellos me devolvieran las piezas y también les dije que podíamos ver nuevamente los costos para devolverles parte del dinero. Claramente no era mi obligación ofrecer ninguna de estas opciones, pero prefería quedar bien con ellos antes que empezaran a hablar mal de mi emprendimiento. Paso un rato y el mal sabor de boca por lo que había pasado no me dejaba enfocarme en otros asuntos, al final desistieron y dijeron que dejáramos todo como estaba.
The options were there, if they were so sure of their order any of the members would have accepted any of these options so I was left guilt free.
Why do I share this story with you? I feel that this is something that can happen to anyone, from a big company to a small one, there are always difficult clients or clients that because of their own bad decisions in a project want to blame us or make us responsible. The important thing is to make things clear from the beginning, offer solutions if they are within our possibilities but always have the character to know how far we can go to solve a problem.

Lo importante es dejar las cosas en claro desde un principio, ofrecer soluciones si están dentro de nuestras posibilidades pero siempre tener el carácter para saber uno hasta donde puede llegar para resolver un problema.
Many of you have probably had something similar happen to you at work or in your own business and it is very likely that it will continue to happen to a greater or lesser extent, I feel that these situations are rare but when they do occur we must be prepared to offer a good and fair response for both parties.
