For this week we are invited to share around 2 proposals:
1.Whether your mother is with us in person or in spirit, what is/was your plan for celebrating Mother's Day this year?
2.Caring for an elderly parent can be a joy and, at the same time, a challenge. What obstacles did you encounter and how did you and your family overcome them?
I selected the second one because I do not have the joy of being a mother and my mom is no longer with me physically.

Para esta semana se nos invita a compartir en torno a 2 propuestas:

2.Cuidar de un padre o madre mayor puede ser una alegría y, al mismo tiempo, un desafío. ¿Qué obstáculos encontraron y cómo los superaron usted y su familia?
Seleccioné la segunda porque no tengo la dicha de ser madre y mi mamá ya no está conmigo físicamente.

A little background
My mother was known for being a very strong-willed woman, but at the same time sweet with the whole family.
A friend described her as “a warrior” and she was.
My mother was a warrior. Always ready for any circumstance, always ready to help, always with advice, guidance, a teaching. She gave birth to all of us by natural childbirth (six children) at home, attended by a midwife from the community, that's a brave thing to do!
She took care of us with care and dedication. My father did not live with us, he would eventually bring supplies to our home, he was only an occasional provider. But our warrior is the one who really maintained the household and all the necessities. She was a seamstress, a craftswoman, knitted beautiful creations, raised animals at home for sale (chickens, rabbits, among others), in short, she did thousands of activities for our sustenance.
She insisted that we had to study and train ourselves for life: and how right she was! He saw all 6 of us graduate: 4 females and 2 males. All professionals thanks to her effort and love.
His presence always inspired us with security and responsibility. Love and respect. Well-being and peace.
Until she got sick and all that peace was disturbed, because I think we are never prepared to see our parents sick and fragile. Especially my mother was a healthy woman, and seeing her in bed broke our hearts.
Un poco de Contexto
Mi madre se caracterizaba por ser una mujer muy fuerte de carácter, pero a la vez dulce con toda la familia.
Una amiga la describía como "una guerrera" y es asi.
Mi mamá era una guerrera. Siempre lista ante cualquier circunstancia, siempre dispuesta a ayudar, siempre con un consejo a flor de labios, una orientación, una enseñanza. Nos tuvo a todos por parto natural (seis hijos) en casa, atendida por una partera de la comunidad, eso ya es de valientes!
Nos cuidó con esmero y dedicación. Mi padre no vivía con nosotros, eventualmente llevaba provisiones a nuestra casa.El solo fue un proveedor ocasional. Pero nuestra guerrera es quien realmente mantenía el hogar y todas las necesidades. Era costurera, manualista, tejía bellezas de creaciones, criaba animales en casa para la venta (gallinas, conejos, entre otros), en fin, hacia miles de actividades para nuestro sustento.
Insistía en que debíamos estudiar y formarnos para la vida: y qué razón tenía!!! Nos vió graduados a los 6: 4 hembras y 2 varones. Todos profesionales gracias a su esfuerzo y amor.
Su presencia nos inspiró siempre seguridad y responsabilidad. Amor y respeto. Bienestar y paz.
Hasta que enfermó y toda esa paz se vió perturbada, porque creo que nunca estamos preparados para ver enfermos y frágiles a nuestros padres. Especialmente mi madre fue una mujer sana, y verla en cama nos partía el corazón.
And with her illness began a whole way of the cross. The 6 of us children organized ourselves to take care of her. First at home, making sure that she did not lack anything: neither attention nor any resource... she was a little worried because she had never fallen into bed, as I said, she was always very healthy.
We tried to cheer her up, to make her feel good. Always cheerful in her care. But it seemed that it was not enough, her health was getting worse. We moved heaven and earth to admit her to a clinic (in Venezuela it is an odyssey to get the Insurance to respond effectively), but we did it!
At the clinic my mom was under the care of very good doctors. Hospitalizing her represented new challenges for the whole family. We had to move with all the logistics to the capital of the country. The unmarried children stayed in the apartment of the brother who lives there. The married children who had to attend to their own families were scheduled to cover their accompanying shifts. But everyone, as we say here, was “on the job”. No one was absent, no one complained, all of us concerned and lovingly took turns with love to accompany her and take care of her. There were times when she had significant improvements and then relapses came....
More obstacles? Shortage of medical supplies: bedding, adult diapers, medicines. But the whole family was in action: while some took care of mommy, others went to pharmacies in various parts of the country or established contacts with other people to find the necessary supplies. And so she never lacked for anything.
We had hoped that the doctors would come up with the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. But unfortunately this was not the case. A lot of tests, a lot of treatments, medical meetings, interconsultations with different specialists. And my mother became more and more fragile and more and more depressed. Until she gave her soul to God (from faith we believe so, there were other plans for her).
That day, I can say with certainty: the saddest day of my life, we were all the siblings gathered in her room. She said she saw a beautiful light. My older sister told her to keep that beautiful light, that we were glad she was in the light. The rest of us, I don't think we had a word to say, and she stayed that way, little by little, until she smiled and with that smile went her last breath.
I can't say what I felt at that moment: emptiness, sadness, anguish, loneliness, uncertainty. But I did feel a tear roll down my cheek, just as tears are falling from my eyes as I am writing this post.
And at this moment when my tears are flowing, I can tell you that I had the best mom in the world.
Y con su enfermedad empezó todo un vía crucis. Los 6 hijos nos organizamos para cuidarla. Primero en casa, cuidando de que no le faltara nada: ni atenciones ni ningún recurso... ella se notaba algo preocupada porque nunca habia caido en cama, como dije, siempre fue muy sana.
Tratábamos de animarla, de hacerla sentir bien. Siempre alegres en su cuidado. Pero parecía que no era suficiente, su salud empeoraba. Movimos cielo y tierra para internarla en una clinica (en Venezuela es una odisea que el Seguro responda efectivamente), pero lo logramos!
En la Clínica mi mami estuvo al cuidado de muy buenos médicos. Internarla representó nuevos retos para toda la familia. Tuvimos que trasladarnos con toda una logística a la capital del país. Los hijos solteros nos quedamos en el apartamento del hermano que reside alli. Los hijos casados que tenian que atender a sus familias propias se programaban para cubrir sus turnos de acompañamiento. Pero todos como decimos aqui "al pié del cañon". Nadie faltó, ninguno se quejó, todos preocupados y amorosos nos turnamos con amor para acompañarla y cuidarla. Hubo momentos en que tuvo mejoras significativas y enseguida venian recaidas...
Mas obstáculos? Escasez de insumos médicos: centros de cama, pañales de adultos, medicinas. Pero toda la familia en acción: mientras unos cuidaban a mami, otros recorrian farmacias en varias zonas del país o establecían los contactos con otras personas para lograr dar con los insumos necesarios. Y así nunca le faltó nada.
Teníamos la esperanza de que los médicos darían con el diagnóstico apropiado y su consecuente tratamiento. Pero lamentablemente no fue asi. Cantidad de exámenes, cantidad de tratamientos, juntas médicas, interconsultas con diversos especialistas. Y mi mamá se volvía mas frágil y mas decaida. Hasta que entregó su alma a Dios (desde la fe asi lo creemos, habían otros planes para ella).
Ese dia, puedo decir con certeza: el día mas triste de mi vida, estábamos todos los hermanos reunidos en su habitación. Ella dijo que veía una luz bonita. Mi hermana mayor le dijo que siguiera con esa luz bonita, que nos alegraba que estuviese en la luz. Los demás creo que no teníamos cómo decir palabra alguna. y asi se fue quedando, poco a poco hasta que sonrió y con esa sonrisa se fue su último aliento.
No puedo decir qué sentí ese instante: vacío, tristeza, angustia, soledad, incertidumbre. Pero si sentí que una lágrima rodó por mi mejilla, asi como ahorita caen lágrimas de mis ojos mientras estoy escribiendo este post.
Y en este momento en que brotan mis lágrimas les puedo decir que tuve a la mejor mamá del mundo.
The pain of her departure is profound, but I find some comfort in honoring her memory and keeping her teachings alive. Every memory I have of her is filled with love and wisdom, and although I miss her every day, I know that her presence lingers in my heart and in the values she left me.
In moments of loneliness and sadness, I cling to those memories and the certainty that her love continues to guide my path. Loss is part of life, but the love she gave us is eternal.
El dolor de su partida es profundo, pero encuentro algo de consuelo al honrar su memoria y mantener vivas sus enseñanzas. Cada recuerdo que tengo de ella está lleno de amor y sabiduría, y aunque la extraño cada día, sé que su presencia perdura en mi corazón y en los valores que me dejó.
En los momentos de soledad y tristeza, me aferro a esos recuerdos y a la certeza de que su amor sigue guiando mi camino. La pérdida es parte de la vida, pero el amor que ella nos dio es eterno.
