Yesterday was Valentine's day and I do not know about the rest of the world, but for majority of young adults in Nigeria, valentine celebration is a big deal as so many youths see a day like that as one to show love to their better halves.
The funny thing about this valentine day is the fact that people go out of their way to please the people they love, pictures and videos of surprises flies all over social media leaving those without a valentine date wishing they had someone to also spoil them with gifts.
The most funny aspect of this display is that, some people go into debt basically to show off to the world that they are capable of making their lover happy. These days everyone has a social media account that needs followers and people will go to any length to proof that they are financially buoyant even if they are rolling in debt.
There is a story of a guy on the internet that caught my attention, he was in a relationship with a girl he loved so much and in order to proof his love for her, he decided to get her her dream car as a Valentine's day gift. He could not completely afford the car at the time, so he decided to take loan from the bank in order to get his girlfriend the car she desired.
On his way to deliver the car however, he realized that, he was not the main man in the relationship as he meet a young man proposing to her while she said yes not minding how bad it will make him feel, as a matter of fact, she acted as if he was a total stranger.
Now, this young man was left with a broken heart, a loan to pay back and a liability to cater for. This brings me to the very point of this post, I believe that it is a terrible idea to get into debt just to purchase liabilities, either the car was purchased for someone special or for himself, a car is a liability that will continue to draw the person's financial status backwards.
I wonder why he could not just give her a gift he could afford comfortably, this would have left him with only heart break without the addition of the loan and liability.
While celebrating Valentine's day, we need to have it in mind that, there are other subsequent days that will be worth celebrating after this one and it is not worth getting into debt for.
