Veintitantos y Valiente - Twenty-something and brave.
Esta semana me ha llenado de nostalgia.
Me ha hecho darme cuenta de cuánto he crecido como persona, y especialmente como educadora. Recibí, de parte de dos personas diferentes, videos y fotos de mis primeros años enseñando en Asia. Cuando apenas tenía veintitantos años, vivía sola por primera vez en Shanghái, China.
Era un sueño loco hecho realidad: vivir en uno de los países más desarrollados del mundo, en una ciudad tan moderna, tan avanzada, era —como mínimo— un logro. Pensar en todo lo que tuve que atravesar para llegar allí me emociona… y también me entristece.
Todos los retos, desafíos y adversidades que enfrenté ahora parecen juegos de niños, pero en su momento, vivirlos y superarlos fue como escalar una montaña sin ningún tipo de protección. Pero esta reflexión me hace apreciar todo lo que he avanzado, y dónde estoy hoy. Decir que emigrar a un país donde no hablas el idioma, no entiendes la cultura y donde las reglas migratorias son tan estrictas es un desafío… es quedarse corta. Tuve que hablar con todas las personas posibles, hacer lo que hoy se llama networking, no tener miedo de asistir a entrevistas, ser curiosa, preguntar de más, y sobre todo: no tener miedo. Recuerdo haber sentido terror de cometer errores —que, por supuesto, terminé cometiendo—, errores simples en situaciones tontas.
El miedo a equivocarme era constante. Temía que me despidieran porque los estudiantes no me entendieran, porque no les agradara a los padres, o porque mis compañeros de trabajo se burlaran de mí o simplemente no me aceptaran.
Pero entre tantas dudas, miedos y desafíos, encontré estudiantes —y padres— que sí me entendieron.A quienes les gustó mi estilo. Que vieron mi talento, mis conocimientos. A quienes no les importó el “qué dirán”. Sabían que lo que yo les enseñaba era valioso, verdadero, y que les sería útil. Lo comprobaron al aprobar sus exámenes, al entender películas, al conversar con otros extranjeros.
Y así pasaron los años. Llegó y se fue una pandemia. Y yo seguí en mi camino, sin desviarme, seguí enseñando. Mis estudiantes crecieron y continuaron aprendiendo conmigo. La voz se corrió. Me di a conocer. Mis estudiantes han llegado más por recomendaciones que por publicaciones o promociones.
Hoy, mi confianza es más grande. Los desafíos ahora son tecnológicos, no personales. Y pienso que, en cinco años, recibiré fotos y videos tomados hoy… y volveré a impresionarme con todo lo que he logrado.
Y con lo lejos que aún puedo llegar.
This week filled me with nostalgia. It made me realize just how much I’ve grown—not only as a person but especially as an educator.
Out of nowhere, two different people sent me videos and photos from my early teaching days in Asia.I was in my early twenties, living alone for the first time in Shanghai, China. It was a wild dream come true—living in one of the most developed countries in the world, in a city that felt futuristic but still full of life and tradition.
It was, at the very least, a win. Thinking about everything I went through to get there brings up so many feelings—some happy, some sad. The challenges, the culture shock, the fear…
Now, all of it seems so small in hindsight. But back then? It felt like climbing a mountain barefoot and without a rope. Still, looking back now, I see how far I’ve come.
Being an immigrant in a country where you don’t speak the language, don’t fully understand the culture, and where immigration rules are tight as hell—it’s more than a challenge.
It’s survival.I had to talk to everyone I could, do what we now call “networking,” show up to interviews without knowing exactly what to expect, ask a million questions, and keep pushing through. I had to let go of the fear—or at least learn to carry it with me. I remember being so scared of messing up.
Of making silly mistakes in everyday situations.
I was terrified that students wouldn’t understand me. That parents wouldn’t like me. That coworkers would laugh at me—or worse, ignore me altogether. But somewhere in the middle of all that doubt and fear, I found people—students and parents—who got me.
They liked my energy. They saw what I could offer. They didn’t care about how perfect my accent was or how different my style might be. They knew what I was teaching mattered, and they saw the results: passing exams, understanding movies, having real conversations in English.
And then the years flew by. A whole pandemic came and went.
And I kept going. I kept teaching. I stayed on my path.
My students grew, and they stayed with me.
Word spread—not because I was out here marketing myself nonstop, but because people believed in what I was doing. Most of my students came from recommendations, not Instagram ads. Now, my confidence feels solid. The challenges I face are mostly tech-related—not about proving myself anymore.
And you know what? I have a feeling that five years from now, I’ll look back at this moment—this exact chapter—and feel that same wave of surprise and pride.
Like, “Wow. Look how far I’ve come… again.”
