Greetings, dear Women of Hive community, this week's quiz includes a question that I love, because it's something that some fellow men and women in this hive have asked me and I've always wanted to explain. What is the origin or meaning of my username on Hive?
I go by Isa Maroon on most of my social networks. Isa because my name is Isabel. In Hive I am Isa O Maroon, I had to include the O of my first surname, Orive, because in 2018 I opened an account in Steemit and then I lost my passwords; so when I wanted to resume in Hive I had to open a new account and that name was taken, but I didn't want to stop naming myself Maroon. Maroon after a woman I admire, Nanny Maroon, from Jamaica. Now I tell you why I took that name.
The word "Maroon", in English, and "Cimarron", in Spanish, come from the word "simaran" of the Tainos (indigenous people of the Caribbean islands) and means wild mount or indomitable animal. Later, this name was given to the slaves who escaped the colonial yoke and took refuge in the mountains or the bush, forming communities in resistance and struggle against slavery.
Nanny Maroon was a spiritual, cultural, military and political leader who commanded an important group of Jamaican Maroons, the "Windward Maroon". This group was made up of Afro-descendants who rebelled and escaped from their oppressors, and under Nanny's command, resisted and fought the British between 1725 and 1740. Nanny Maroon, along with his army, freed more than a thousand enslaved men and women, commanded another thousand and successfully led an entire population of Maroons, not only in battle, but also led them to settle in liberated territories to which the British had no access.

Me hago llamar Isa Maroon en la mayoría de mis redes sociales. Isa porque mi nombre es Isabel. En Hive soy Isa O Maroon, tuve que incluirle la O de mi primer apellido, Orive, ya que en el 2018 abrí una cuenta en Steemit y luego perdí mis claves; así que cuando quise retomar en Hive tuve que abrir una cuenta nueva y ese nombre estaba ocupado, pero no quería dejar de nombrarme Maroon. Maroon por una mujer a la que admiro, Nanny Maroon, de Jamaica. Ahora les cuento por qué tomé ese nombre.
La palabra "Maroon", en inglés, y "Cimarrón", en español, provienen del vocablo "simarán" de los Taínos (pueblo indígena originario de las islas del Caribe) y significa monte silvestre o animal indomesticable. Luego se le denominó así a los esclavos que escapaban del yugo colonial y se refugiaban en la montaña o el monte, conformando comunidades en resistencia y lucha contra la esclavitud.
Nanny Maroon fue una lideresa espiritual, cultural, militar y política que comandó a un grupo importante de cimarrones de Jamaica, los "Windward Maroon". Este grupo estaba conformado por afrodescendiente que se revelaron y escaparon de sus opresores, y bajo el mando de Nanny, resistieron y dieron batalla a los británicos entre 1725 y 1740. Nanny Maroon, junto a su ejército, llegó a liberar a más de mil hombres y mujeres esclavizados, comandaba a otro tanto y lideró exitosamente a toda una población de cimarrones, no solo en batalla, sino que los guio a establecerse en territorios a liberados a los que los ingleses no tenían acceso.
I will tell you more about her in another publication. What is certain is that I identify with the free and unbending spirit of those men and women who fought for their lives and the lives of their children, the Maroons. And I marvel at the possibility of all that a woman can achieve when she finds her reason for being and understands her role in the world. Every woman has that potential in herself, she just has to recognize herself and act in coherence with her own essence. I am not saying that all women are destined or choose to subvert the order and make a revolution, everyone fights their own battles, big or small, and surely there will be circumstances and people who discourage us or hurt us that we have to face without backing down as Nanny Maroon did. The very order of things often puts us women at a disadvantage, but we always have the option to fight and be stronger than the circumstances, to seek support, to tribe, to trust in our inner power.
I consider myself a Maroon because since I was a little girl I have fought against what a girl or woman is supposed to be and do. I have always rebelled against the "status quo" that told me, for example, girls only play dolls, or bike races are for boys and not for girls. Thank God I had understanding parents and my life has been a good life, but I know there are many women who have had to suffer to assert their dignity and their reason for being. Those women I want to honor by naming myself Maroon, by perceiving myself as a Maroon.

Lo cierto es que me identifico con el espíritu libre e indoblegable de aquellos hombres y mujeres que lucharon por su vida y la de sus hijos, los cimarrones. Y me maravillo con la posibilidad de todo lo que puede lograr una mujer cuando encuentra su razón de ser y entiende su papel en el mundo. Toda mujer tiene ese potencial en sí misma, solo debe reconocerse y actuar en coherencia con su propia esencia. No estoy diciendo que todas las mujeres estemos destinadas u optemos por subvertir el orden y hacer una revolución, cada quien libra sus propias batallas, grandes o pequeñas, y seguramente habrá circunstancias y personas que nos desalienten o nos lastimen a las que tengamos que hacerle frente sin retroceder como lo hizo Nanny Maroon. El mismo orden de las cosas muchas veces nos coloca a las mujeres en desventaja, pero siempre tenemos la opción de luchar y ser más fuertes que las circunstancias, buscar apoyo, hacer tribu, confiar en nuestro poder interior.
Yo me considero cimarrona porque desde niña he luchado contra lo que se supone debe ser y hacer una niña o mujer. Siempre me he rebelado contra el "status quo" que me decía, por ejemplo, las niñas solo juegan a muñecas, o las carreras de bici son para niños y no para niñas. Gracias a Dios tuve unos padres comprensivos y mi vida ha sido una buena vida, pero sé que hay muchas mujeres que han tenido que sufrir para hacer valer su dignidad y su razón de ser. A esas mujeres quiero honrar al nombrarme Maroon, al percibirme como cimarrona. .
