This is an issue that is close to my heart because my first cousin suffers from schizophrenia. Since he was a child, his behaviors were not normal, he enjoyed hurting little animals. I remember one time he picked up a chick that my grandfather had given him and simply jumped on it one day, killing it immediately.
Mom, in her innocent ignorance, told me to stay away from him, because there was something wrong with him, as his dad was a very aggressive man and it was likely that Maxi (that's my cousin's name), had inherited that character.
No one ever paid proper attention to him, they chose to turn their faces away from him.
Then Maxi decided to seclude himself in military school and up to that point everything was fine; he had his girlfriend and apparently everything was fine. He was very much in love with her. One day the girl was the victim of a robbery where the thief shot her and she died. When my cousin heard about it, he screamed, cried and said he would take revenge and discharged himself from military school. But unfortunately, in the midst of his desperation, he fell into drugs. He tried everything and my aunt could not control him because he stole things from the house to be able to buy those substances. All these events happened over the years.
My aunt, who was a single woman, decided to confine him in a center for drug addicts, and among the multiple tests he underwent, he was diagnosed with residual schizophrenia, which had increased with drug use.
He was confined in that center, which belonged to the State, because private centers were highly expensive. After a couple of weeks, he escaped. For days he was wandering the streets and someone saw him and alerted my aunt, who went to look for him.
I should point out that my cousin had studied Karate since he was a child, becoming a black belt. He gave lessons to a neighbor who had a competition in China and the girl won. Everyone in my town knew Maxi for being an excellent karateka, the Karate teachers despite knowing how good he was in that sport, did not dare to hire him because of his drug addiction.
His addiction and his illness, combined with this sport, made him an incredibly strong person. In order to take him to the health center, it had to be between several nurses because one alone could not handle him.
In 2018 was the last time my aunt put him in a private facility because she could not afford the monthly payment. For the last four years, she has had him at home, since the public health centers only have the patient for a period of three months, no more.
The medications he takes are excessively expensive and sometimes stop working, which makes him aggressive. Then the dosage has to be increased, but he can never stop taking them. There is no cure for his disease, so taking the drugs is mandatory.
As I have managed to collaborate with my cousin
First of all, I have read a lot in this regard, I have documented myself because I do not deny that at the beginning I was a little afraid, his wild eyes and his lackluster look.
It has not been easy for my aunt, not only on an economic level, but also on an emotional level. Their treatment of each other is dysfunctional. There was a time when Maxi would tell her that one of the voices she heard was demanding that she kill a mom. My aunt had to lock herself under lock and key every time she goes to sleep.
Sometimes she allows him to go out for a walk and then he comes to my house, because to him, my mother and I are the nicest people in this world and all the voices that speak to him in his mind, he tells them to take care of me. When he comes, I usually make red fruit tea, because it is his favorite. He likes to watch TV and I give him the remote control so he has absolute freedom to look for the program he wants.
I hug him a lot, tousle his hair, tell him I love him and always take him to remember the good things and the beautiful moments we have had and he tells me in his few moments of lucidity, that he feels desperate because there are more and more voices he hears, but sometimes he does not understand what they say because they talk to each other.
When he is not well, he doesn't come and if I see him passing by the house, he doesn't say hello and keeps walking away, in a hurried and obviously annoyed pace.
For my aunt, what I do for her, because I know it is not easy, is to do the market shopping for her and if he is on one of his good days, she tells me to take her for a walk. I try to help her that way, to make her feel that somehow she can rest her burden a little bit on someone else. Sometimes she calls me crying with sadness because she doesn't know what to do and because she doesn't understand why God sent them such a difficult test, sometimes she wants to run away and other times she feels terrified because she is already an old person, 72 years old and her health is not the best and she thinks about the moment that something happens to her, that she will leave and Maxi will be left alone. I try to comfort her by telling her not to think about that.
Both she and Maxi smoke too much, about a pack a day each. She, I guess it's an escape route that in the end is damaging her lungs. And while they smoke, they drink coffee.
That's why I try to help her as much as I can, whenever I cook something delicious and I make quite a lot, I share it with her so that at least she can forget about cooking for a day. I also take her to the hairdresser who works at home to fix her hair and give her a manicure. That brings a smile to her face and helps her cope with the painful and difficult time she has been going through.
But all these patients require a lot of patience, affection and often make him believe that we are not listening to him when his aggressiveness is unleashed.
How to avoid Internet romance scams?

It's amazing how many times I've heard about social media romance scams. There is even a documentary that touches on this topic of a Tinder scammer.
My sister was also almost a victim of this situation, but she is not stupid and when the man asked her for money because he had a block on his accounts and needed to pay some bills, my sister blocked him at once.
I have a friend who has had everything happen to her because she is addicted to meeting men via Tinder and other similar apps. Finally after being scammed once, tricked in several ways and after meeting more than a dozen men through networks, she already met someone more than a year ago and so far he is the one she has lasted the longest with. Let's hope that all goes well.
What would I do to avoid being a victim of Internet dating scams?
The only consistent thing I can do and have done all my life. I don't accept friend requests from people I don't know. All the contacts I have on both Instagram and Facebook are people I know. On Twitter it's different because there people just follow you and that's it and I'm not obligated to follow anyone.
On the other hand, I've never liked trying to meet men through any app, nor am I interested in those loves. There is nothing better than direct contact, the touch of hands, the feeling that someone can give you when you see them for the first time. For these applications I think that they set up a character to conquer the other, both men and women. I think there is no sincerity.
So I am sure that this will not happen to me, because I do not practice these ways of life.

Este es un tema que me toca de cerca porque mi primo hermano padece esquizofrenia. Desde niño, sus comportamientos no eran normales, disfrutaba hacerle daño a los animalitos. Recuerdo que en una oportunidad cogió a un pollito que mi abuelo le había regalado y simplemente un día saltó sobre él, matándolo de inmediato.
Mamá en su inocente ignorancia, me dijo que me alejase de él, porque algo malo tenía, ya que su papá era un hombre muy agresivo y era probable que Maxi (así se llama mi primo), hubiese heredado ese carácter.
Nunca nadie le prestó la atención adecuada, sino que eligieron voltear su rostro hacia otro lado.
Luego Maxi decidió recluirse en la escuela militar y hasta ahí todo bien; tenía su novia aparentemente estaba todo bien. Él estaba muy enamorado de ella. Un día la chica fue víctima de un asalto donde el ladrón le disparó y ella murió. Mi primo al enterarse, gritó, lloró diciendo que se vengaría y se dio de baja en la escuela militar. Pero desafortunadamente, en medio de su desesperación, cayó en drogas. Llegó a probar de todo y mi tía no podía controlarlo porque él robaba cosas en la casa para poder comprar esas sustancias. Todos estos acontecimientos se fueron suscitando con el correr de los años.
Mi tía, quien era una mujer sola, decidió recluirlo en un centro para adictos a las drogas y entre los múltiples exámenes que le hicieron, le diagnosticaron esquizofrenia residual, que con el consumo de drogas, se había acrecentado.
Estuvo recluido en ese centro que era del Estado, porque los centros privados eran altamente costosos. Al cabo de un par de semanas, se escapó. Durante días estuvo vagando por las calles y alguien lo vio y avisó a mi tía, quien fue a buscarlo.
Debo acotar que mi primo desde niño estudió Karate, llegando a ser cinta negra. Dio clases a una vecina que tenía una competencia en China y la chica ganó. Todos en mi pueblo conocían a Maxi por ser un excelente karateka, los profesores de Karate a pesar de saber lo bueno que era en ese deporte, no se atrevían a contratarlo por su adicción a las drogas.
Su adicción y su enfermedad aunado a este deporte, le hacían una persona increíblemente fuerte. Para poder llevárselo al centro de salud, tenía que ser entre varios enfermeros porque uno solo no podía con él.
En el 2018 fue la última vez que mi tía lo recluyó en un centro privado porque no podía costear el pago mensual. Desde hace cuatro años, lo tiene en su casa, ya que los centros de salud públicos solo tienen al paciente por un periodo de tres meses, no más.
Los medicamentos que toma son excesivamente costosos y a veces dejan de hacerle efecto, lo que lo hace ser agresivo. Entonces hay que aumentar la dosis, pero jamás puede dejar de consumirlos. Su enfermedad no tiene cura, por lo que la ingesta de los medicamentos es obligatoria.
Como he logrado colaborar con mi primo
En primer lugar, he leído mucho en este sentido, me he documentado porque no niego que al principio me generaba un poco de temor, sus ojos desorbitados y su mirada carente de brillo.
Para mi tía no ha sido nada fácil, no solo a nivel económico, sino a nivel emocional. El trato entre ellos es disfuncional. Hubo una época en la que Maxi le decía que una de las voces que escuchaba, le exigía que matase a un mamá. Mi tía tuvo que encerrarse bajo llave cada vez que se va a dormir.
A veces ella le permite que salga a dar una vuelta y entonces él viene a mi casa, porque para él, mi madre y yo somos las personas más buenas de este mundo y todas las voces que le hablan en su mente, les dice que me cuide. Cuando él viene, suelo hacer té de frutos rojos, porque es su favorito. A él le gusta ver TV y yo le cedo el mando para que él tenga libertad absoluta de buscar el programa que quiera.
Lo abrazo mucho, le despeino el cabello, le digo que lo quiero y siempre lo llevo a recordar las cosas buenas y los bonitos momentos que hemos tenido y él me cuenta en sus pocos momentos de lucidez, que se siente desesperado porque cada vez son más las voces que escucha, pero que a veces no entiende lo que dicen porque hablan entre sí.
Cuando él no está bien, no viene y si lo veo pasar cerca de la casa, él no saluda y sigue de largo, a paso apresurado y evidentemente molesto.
Por mi tía, lo que hago por ella, porque sé que no es fácil, es hacerle las compras del mercado y si él está en uno de sus buenos días, ella me dice que la lleve un rato de paseo. A ella trato de ayudarla de esa forma, que se sienta que de alguna forma puede descansar un poco su carga sobre alguien más. A veces me llama llorando con tristeza porque no sabe qué hacer y porque no entiende por qué Dios les mando esta prueba tan difícil, que a veces quisiera salir corriendo y otras veces se siente aterrada porque ya ella es una persona mayor, de 72 años y su salud tampoco es la mejor y piensa en el momento que le pase algo, que se vaya y que Maxi se quede solo. Yo trato de consolarla diciéndole que no piense en eso.
Tanto ella como Maxi fuman demasiado, alrededor de una cajetilla diaria cada uno. Ella, supongo que es una vía de escape que al final está dañando sus pulmones. Y mientras fuman, beben café.
Por eso yo trato de ayudarla en lo que pueda, siempre que cocino algo delicioso y que hago bastante cantidad, lo comparto con ella para que al menos se desentienda de la cocina por un día. También le llevo a la peluquera que trabaja a domicilio para que le arregle su cabello y le haga manicure. Eso le saca una sonrisa y la ayuda a enfrentar el doloroso y difícil trance que le ha tocado vivir.
Pero todos estos pacientes requieren mucha paciencia, cariño y muchas veces hacerle creer que no estamos escuchándolo cuando se desata su agresividad.
Cómo evitar las estafas románticas por Internet?

Es impresionante la cantidad de veces que he escuchado esto de las estafas románticas por redes sociales. Incluso hay un documental que toca este tema de un estafador de Tinder.
Mi hermana también fue casi una víctima de esta situación, pero no es tonta y cuando el hombre le pidió dinero porque tenía un bloqueo en sus cuentas y necesitaba pagar unas cuentas, mi hermana lo bloqueó de una vez.
Tengo una amiga que le ha pasado de todo porque es adicta a conocer hombres vía Tinder y otras aplicaciones similares. Finalmente después de haber sido estafada una vez, engañada de varias maneras y después de haber conocido más de una docena de hombres a través de las redes, ya conoció alguien hace más de un año y hasta ahora es con el que más ha durado. Esperemos que siga todo bien.
¿Qué haría yo para evitar ser víctima de estafas en las citas por Internet?
Lo único coherente que puedo hacer y que he hecho toda mi vida. No acepto solicitudes de amistad de personas que no conozco. Todos los contactos que tengo tanto en Instagram como en Facebook, son personas que conozco. En Twitter es distinto porque allí la gente solo te sigue y ya y no estoy obligada a seguir a nadie.
Por otro lado, jamás me ha gustado tratar de conocer hombres por ninguna aplicación, ni me interesan esos amores. No hay nada mejor que el contacto directo, el roce de manos, el feeling que te puede dar alguien cuando lo ves por primera vez. Por estas aplicaciones creo que se montan un personaje para conquistar al otro, tanto hombres como mujeres. Creo que no hay sinceridad.
Así que estoy segura de que esto no me pasará a mí, porque no practico estas formas de vida.
