Hobo(left) and Tramp(right) are pretty opposite felinalities.
Sometimes the universe kind of pushes the topic choice for writing. Today as I was going through post notices I first came across @epodcaster on Hive mentioning yesterday was National Pet Day. Then I happened on a post from the @ladiesofhive weekly contest and learned one of their questions this week was:
“Pets are a gentle breeze or sometimes a big splash. We would like to hear about that special pet in your life. It can be the pet you had as a child or your current pet.”
I’ve had several cats over the course of my adult life. They all have had their special place in my heart. I’m going to talk about my two current cats. I am currently blessed with both a gentle breeze and a big splash of a cat. Readers who have read some of “Hobo’s posts” probably can guess pretty quickly, she’s the big splash.
Hobo, the Big Splash
She bounced off my door one cold October morning. When I went out to investigate there was this little kitten peaking out from under a plant in the garden. I bent over and called her to come and out she ran to my outstretched hand.
Since then she’s been a larger than life little brat at times. She’s also has her times when she can be very sweet. She does what she wants to do and for the most part there’s little that can dissuade her. It’s that out there personality that I draw on when the hobo posts get written.
She’s at her happiest when she’s around me. She makes sure I don’t ignore her. When I’m in the kitchen working at the counter and she wants my attention, she just jumps onto my shoulder to watch what I’m doing. It was cute when she was a trim little 2-3lb kitten. She’s now around 8-10lbs and definitely noticeable when she lands on my shoulder.
She seems to think that anything I spend time using is something she needs to assert her dominance over. That means I need to keep a careful eye her around my computer equipment.
My mouse takes regular trips to the floor. When I’m typing on the keyboard, she thinks she should help. Do I want to see what’s on my second monitor, gonna need to move her first. Speaking of the monitor, she was using that as a jungle gym recently.
I bought a cat tree in an effort to give her something to climb on. It’s helped, now she jumps over the monitor up onto the tree. Tramp loves it too.
Tramp, the Gentle Breeze.
This gentle little soul arrived here when she was about four months old. She was rescued from a feral mother. She’s been in the house now for just over 2 years. I have had to let her find her own space in the house.
She lets me pet her and she will run to me first thing in the morning wanting petting and cuddling but not picked up. As long as she can make a quick escape she is a loving little soul. Pick her up, she wont fight me as long as I keep the time I hold her very short. Then she squirms wanting down and will run off.
So, I do sometimes pick her up, give her a quick cuddle and put her down. She’s been slowly getting more trusting of me and some day she may actually want to be picked up and played with.
I laugh at her when I see her quietly nudge herself past Hobo to get what she wants. I watched her and Hobo the other day. Hobo was on the arm of the couch and looked like she was going to jump from there to the cat tree. As she was crouching to make the jump Tramp jumped up, nudged her off and jumped to the tree.
She left Hobo looking up at the tree and then at me like, did you see that? I was too busy laughing to answer.
I love that the two cats are opposite personalities. They are buddies and interesting souls in their own right.
