The most curious feeling I've ever had is related to an online relationship I had during my teenage years. Voice and video weren't a feature back then, so my entire communication happened through text. We never exchanged pictures, either. Or maybe we did and they were fake. Or were they?
It felt real while I was in it. But once it was over... its memory worsens over time... it ages like a thought you weren't supposed to have. It doesn't feel real anymore. I even get somewhat paranoid about it. Was that person really there for me? Were they lying about who they were? Were they truthful about how they felt? I want to believe I have the answers, but the courage escapes me.
I start remembering it like a fever dream. My heart aches, but I can't put a finger on why it does so. I resent and I regret, but I'm also proud and even remorseful. She and I are characters in a romance or a psychological thriller. A story meant to stay inside a locked box in my cellar that I can fondly look at every five or ten years.
Our relationship was never meant to be, but fate had it happen anyway. Each time, we envisioned ourselves in front of each other and talked for hours. Was it real? Even if it was, because it never took place in the physical world, I can't help but perceive that it was all a lie in my head.
Epilogue
An event like this has to be canonical, right? Has everyone had a time in their life that is only sad now because of how happy it seemed at the time? Not the "nostalgic" kind of sad due to wanting to be there one more time. More like the happiness was inverted on itself.
It's good because it was sad. A necessary chapter from which I would build on the remainder of our existence. The stepping stone I never wished for, yet one of the most crucial events of my life. I don't cherish this. If I could go back in time, I would rewrite my relationship from scratch, not keeping a single page of that book untouched.
Sure, I might call myself Joys now, that is my main alias, but how can one feel true happiness if not by living through sorrow? It isn't perpexling to me how other people don't value the little things in their everyday life. It's just normal for them.
Of course they can't appreciate it. Of course they also won't notice when the floor they walk on turns into lava. Once they finally realize it, though, it will take a long time to set their feet on the ground again. This, I know.
Yet, despite all of this experience I've accrued during my lifetime, I continue to thread on the same lava that has been my floor ever since I met that girl who faded away. Mind you, it has cooled down, becoming a solid path forward. No longer my feet will hurt, even if they tremble sometimes.
In fact, they tremble now as I write about her again. A part of reality fades away, replaced by idealized assumptions. My fingers stop typing for a longer time between sentences. An alternate reality sets in. But it's only my memories!
For so many years, I was stranded right here. A place I once saw as my home. It hurts and it's comforting to see it again, but I can say I've grown used to this transition. I will be all right when I leave. And then I blink. I'm back. Sort of. My eyes adjust. I tend to something else.
A garota que parece ter sumido
O sentimento mais curioso que já tive está ligado a um relacionamento online que vivi na adolescência. Naquela época, não existiam chamadas de voz nem de vídeo — toda a nossa comunicação acontecia por texto. Nunca trocamos fotos. Ou talvez tenhamos trocado… e talvez fossem falsas. Ou seriam verdadeiras?
Parecia real enquanto acontecia. Mas, depois que acabou… a memória foi se desgastando com o tempo. Envelhece como um pensamento que você não deveria ter tido. Já não parece mais real. Às vezes, até me sinto meio paranoico. Aquela pessoa estava realmente lá por mim? Ela mentiu sobre quem era? Foi sincera sobre o que sentia? Quero acreditar que tenho essas respostas, mas me falta coragem.
Começo a lembrar como quem lembra de um sonho febril. Meu peito dói, mas não sei exatamente por quê. Eu sinto rancor e sinto arrependimento, mas também sinto orgulho e até remorso. Eu e ela somos personagens de um romance e thriller psicológico. Uma história que deveria ficar trancada numa caixa no porão, pra eu abrir e olhar com certo carinho a cada cinco ou dez anos.
Nosso relacionamento nunca foi pra ser, mas o destino fez acontecer mesmo assim. Várias vezes, imaginávamos estar frente a frente, conversando por horas. Isso foi real? Mesmo que tenha sido — por não ter acontecido no mundo físico — não consigo deixar de sentir que tudo existiu apenas dentro da minha cabeça.
Epílogo
Um acontecimento assim tem que ser canônico, certo? Todo mundo tem algum momento na vida que hoje só é triste porque, na época, parecia feliz? E não falo daquela tristeza nostálgica de quem quer reviver algo. É mais como se aquela felicidade tivesse se invertido sobre si mesma.
É bom porque foi triste. Um capítulo necessário, a partir do qual eu construiria todo o resto da minha existência. Uma pedra fundamental na qual eu nunca quis pisar - e, ainda assim, um dos eventos mais cruciais da minha vida. Eu não tenho carinho por isso. Se eu pudesse voltar no tempo, reescreveria todo aquele relacionamento do zero, sem deixar uma única página intacta.
Sim, hoje me chamo Joys — esse é meu principal apelido. Mas como alguém pode sentir felicidade de verdade sem antes ter vivido a dor? Não me surpreende nem um pouco que as pessoas não valorizem as pequenas coisas do dia a dia. Pra elas, é só... normal.
É claro que elas não conseguem apreciar. É claro que também não percebem quando o chão debaixo dos pés vira lava. E quando finalmente perceberem, vai levar muito tempo até conseguirem firmar os pés no chão de novo. Isso... isso eu sei.
E, apesar de toda essa experiência que acumulei ao longo da vida, continuo andando sobre a mesma lava que virou meu chão desde o dia em que conheci aquela garota que se apagou. Veja bem, ela esfriou, virou um caminho sólido pra seguir em frente. Meus pés não se machucam mais — embora ainda tremam, às vezes.
Na verdade, eles tremem agora, enquanto escrevo sobre ela de novo. Uma parte da realidade se desfaz, substituída por suposições idealizadas. Meus dedos param de digitar por mais tempo entre uma frase e outra. Uma realidade alternativa se instala. Mas são só as minhas memórias!
Por tantos anos, fiquei preso bem aqui. Um lugar que, um dia, eu considerei meu lar. Rever isso dói e, ao mesmo tempo, conforta. Mas posso dizer que já me acostumei com essa transição. Vou ficar bem quando for embora. E então, eu pisco. Volto. Mais ou menos. Meus olhos se ajustam. Eu me volto pra outra coisa.
