Sanctuary; a consecrated place or a place of refuge and protection has a relative meaning across the different spheres of life. In biology, a sanctuary means a nature reserve. In religion a sanctuary is a holy place; a temple. In church architecture, a sanctuary is the part of the chancel of a church containing the high altar.
Looking closely at the definitions, they all imply that a sanctuary is a safe place set aside for a purpose. A place where peace and solace is found, and a sort of escape from a disturbing situation.
As a consecrated place, a sanctuary implies purity, salvation and redemption. A place free of judgment and scrutiny. An atmosphere that doesn't absolve a person of sin or wrong doings but a place to confront the pain, trauma, and atone. This is often the kind of feeling we find in people whom we consider home. They offer us a space in their hearts where we can unpack the baggage and relieve the heaviness. They feel like such a relief- a safe place and their words are consoling and reassuring.
As a place of refuge and protection, a sanctuary can offer temporary immunity even against the law. In the past, church buildings became an oasis that offers refuge to people even for up to 40 days before the law catches up.
Sanctuary for many is personalized. It could be that sacred place in their homes, being in the arms of their loved ones, that big or little project they have going on, cuddling their pet or even relishing their favorite meal. A sanctuary conjures the feeling of a haven. It is the feeling of being away from the bustling world and becoming free in your natural element.
In another light, that little corner or space in your head that you set aside to ponder, meditate and have sober reflection can be a sanctuary. Within that space, you can let it all out. That place where you listen to your inner voice, and allows you to elevate yourself to higher grounds and speak life into your existence. I call it the highest altar of consciousness. You come out new and refreshed-your original self.
In conclusion, I reiterate that a sanctuary is a place, feeling, or thing that offers a person a level of security, safety, and assurance. It lets a person thrive freely without the distractions of the outside world.
