We lost our beloved pet, Sadie, yesterday. She was being groomed by a mobile groomer and apparently hit her head and started to seize. The seizure ended, but others followed and, between seizures, she was unable to move one side of her body. We rushed her to the emergency vet down the street and considered the options. It was clear that she had a stroke, a brain bleed, or a cerebral mass. None of these are good situations, especially for a fifteen year-old dog. In the end, putting her quality of life ahead of any selfish desires to keep her alive, we made the difficult decision to euthanize her, and she died in our arms.

Sadie was a maltese who was born in California. She came home with us on home layaway from a pet store. She was so small when she was young, that we took her everywhere in my wife's purse. She attended church weddings, and sneaked into restaurants. She moved with us to Colorado for eight years, then back to California for five years, and then to her final home in Texas. She travelled everywhere with us, making the trip back to California and to Colorado last year, and even to Idaho to visit her (human) brother who called her "tiny face."
Sadie was definitely showing her age, preferring to nap most of the time. She had cataracts, and sometimes got lost going from her bed to her water bowl and back. Except for the accident, her final day was a happy one. She had eaten a full breakfast and ran in excited circles like a puppy before getting a cookie after breakfast.
