Good day Hivers.
This is a blog to Share a little thing I've learnt on the Dapp.
First of, I haven't been on the hive blockchain for so long, it's been 3-4months I joined I guess. So you could always drop corrections or additions in the comment.
Okay, so as a hiver, I feel there are two concepts that should be important to you— communities and Tags!
The reason being that while using the hive, we're constantly after good engagements on our posts(majorly upvotes). And it can be very discouraging after putting out a post and it gets little or zero engagements.
Sometimes the issue is that you're not doing something right or it's just the quality of the post itself.
Now, some of the things we do wrong especially as beginners is the lack of knowledge in the game of Tags and the game of communities.
We all want to get the Visibility that comes with popular tags and communities but that's where we get it wrong.
Yes, Tags and Communities on the Hive are both features that help a post gain visibility. They are like two sides of the Same Coin.
But using a Tag or posting in a community that's totally not related to your content is where we get it wrong.
I myself have had to realize this but in a hardway. I've had to watch contents I put so much work into get little or no engagement.
But again I feel like it's one of those things that happens on the dapp. We keep on learning to get better at blogging and also make our time on the blockchain worthwhile.
First, the use of Tags on the Hive is totally different from our normal social media platforms. While on platforms like Instagram you can use just about any hashtag just because it's trending or popular, it's not the same with the hive blockchain. On the Dapp, you need to use a mix of tags related to your post.
Also, unlike the social media platforms were you just add tags to the body of your text, on Dapp there's a space for that. Adding tags to the body of your text is not effective. It wouldn't give the visibility you're after. This is something learnt recently from a post by @beeber.
Moreso, you can use a maximum of 10 tags on the hive. One of the tags, the primary tag, isn't necessarily a "tag" though. The Primary tag is like a category for a blog or that of the community you're posting to. All others can be generic or proprietary tags. Generic are like tags that are general, they could go with any topic e.g #blockchain #hiveio #neoxian #life e.t.c
Proprietary tags are those that relate to the content of your post.
The need to know how to use tags and the right tags for a post is necessary to prevent your content from being tagged as spam or being seen as tag abusing by @hivewatchers.
Then Communities. I know sometimes you look at the membership of a community and you feel it can get you engagements but it's not always so.
From my personal experience, I find that the first thing you should do while joining a community is to read the community's description and very importantly their rules so your post doesn't become spam.
it's always good also to study the engagement behavior of a community before setting your expectations. If it's obvious that alot of the members actual engage post then it's down to your content. But even then, you yourself must be ready to engage posts too. Your activity on the group can help you gain followers and also people to follow.
Last thing about communities is participating in Contest. I find is one of the easiest way to be visible on a community.
If you're in community that interest you, you should take on contests to show what you can do or better still why you're there in the first place.
Contests are ways to improve your blogging skills too. When winners are announced you check for what they did differently and grow, I think that's one of the essence of communities.
